Your input about a revert discussion

BaldBoris, would you care to comment on a discussion at Talk:Tiksi Airport? The article gets little traffic. A user seems to be acting as a gatekeeper there. I tried to explain Wikipedia editing philosophy, but I'm not sure where to go from here if the gatekeeper persists. Thanks and sorry to bother you! Feel free to delete this section. Holy (talk) 19:02, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

What compelled you to come to me? Conflicts such as these make me purposefully stay away certain articles and stick to places where it's limited at least. My only advise is not take things too seriously and avoid conflict. BaldBoris 14:02, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Kennedy Bros. Books

I must say thank you for updating the Kennedy Brothers sources I poached from you! I don't know how you came across these series of books, but I'm excited for their potential. After seeing you initially post these I tried to find them online and they seem to be quite rare, although I did find some on Abebooks. You mentioned in the comments that you have several of them. How exactly are the books laid out? Do they have mainly pictures, decent stage coverage, or any final standings? Just curious as to how beneficial they'll be before I may purchase any. I have scans for two Italian books covering specific Giro editions, but I need to find time to sit down and translate them properly. Hope things are going well with you. Disc Wheel (T + C) 18:01, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Disc Wheel: A certain auction site.. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds, as it requires near enough daily checking for a long, long time. I haven't spent Abe prices. They cover in detail every stage, plus more. They are basically well written reports put together as books with a healthy amount of photos. Made by International Cycle Sport, who done it that way instead of Giro or Tour special issues. I believe they shipped 1000s to the US, so they're out there. If I see any on sale over there I'll give you a shout. The Giro results don't seem to have all top-10s like most of the Tour ones for some reason. The single 70s books seem to be much more detailed. I'm using the '71 Tour and it's very thorough! I'll look in detail and give you a better overview when I get a chance. I figured you could read Italian after seeing all the sources you've used. On a side, I'm struggling to understand the why the times for the '71 Tour prologue TTT appear so slow..? [1] I've calculated that Molteni averaged 10.11kmh. I take it the time was multiplied by 5, the number of required finishers of each team? The 2015 Vuelta opening TTT used the actual time. BaldBoris 19:09, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well I commend you on your monitoring! I'm sure those books will be big assets for improving the Tour and Giro articles then! Sadly, I just type or copy the article into Google translate and correct characters and such to get a general guideline of what happened, although I have gotten some Italian down through it though.
As for the quandry regarding the TTT. I immediately thought this was going to be like in the 1971 Giro d'Italia where the riders rode the stage in segments and totaled the time together. However, for the Tour I am thinking they had each team's riders ride the course and summed together the best 5 times per team to get the ranking. Here's a link to L'Unita's article for that day
Doesn't really answer our question. I'll see what I can find for you my man. Disc Wheel (T + C) 21:57, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
From the 1971 Bike Race Info page: "The prologue times were calculated by adding up the times of the first five riders of each team and did not apply to the riders' individual GC, but did count towards the Team GC competition", so I guess it was along the lines of what I was thinking. It's just not clear if they all rode it separately as an ITT or they rode as they ride today, together, and just counted when each rider crossed the line to get the times. Levitan and Torriani seem to be playing off one another! Disc Wheel (T + C) 22:30, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, hit the nail on the head now. BRI 1971 Tour Archived In the story section it talks of the prologue and has a picture from the day of the Molteni squad. It appears they rode together and I'm assuming just took individual times to get the team's times. This goes with the L'Unita quote which talks of the first five times. Hope that helps some! Disc Wheel (T + C) 22:34, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Disc Wheel: Doing the translation is a herculean effort, wow! I've done it enough to know how hard it is. With Delpher they have converted it very well into text which you can then easily highlight and translate. The two 2017 Giro books prove there hasn't been anyway near enough documented. When the Tour is around all else will suffer, sadly.
If the team classification was the only counted I can kinda understand why they combined them times, but the book says the first across the line (Merckx) wore yellow the next stage and the other Molteni riders took up the next four positions on the GC. I'll have a dig around and get it right. Thanks for your help. BaldBoris 23:19, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Delpher is solid, just they tend to not cover the Giro at the lengths you or I would require. I was stoked when I saw those books and got scans of them on my hard drive to use, but so far they haven't been as much help as I would've desired. In one of the books, or maybe it was Pedalare Pedalare, the author mentioned that they used La Gazzetta's print archive in Milan for various details, which is mighty tempting to do down the line! If you ever need anything let me know, I check things regularly when procrastinating IRL (as I am doing now). Take it easy. Disc Wheel (T + C) 00:26, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

FACs

Hi -- I happened to see your note to Zwerg Nase when looking through your contribs to see what you'd done to the Tour articles, and wanted to just let you know that your supposition is correct. I am planning to review the other one but was indeed waiting till NapHit's comments are addressed. Not much point in commenting when I might just be duplicating his comments. I also want to review the snooker article that's languishing, but if the '98 Tour one is done I'll review that one after the snooker FAC. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 01:18, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Mike Christie: That's funny because for some reason I had a feeling you might, and get held up. He should have it done tomorrow as he said. I'm honoured you had a look. Your help in the 1962 Tour's 2nd FAC is still appreciated, which as you can see above will be on the front soon. I feel the race overview section a little light in comparision to recent Tours I've worked on, but it is what it is. I'll be nominating 1971 soon. BaldBoris 02:44, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mike Christie: It would be great if you could take a look once NapHit is through. Sorry this had some delay, sometimes nothing happens at those FACs for a month and then people start commenting just when you have little time to respond :( Zwerg Nase (talk) 10:45, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it never rains but it pours; I know that feeling. Sure -- I'll wait for NapHit's issues to be struck and will take a look as soon after that as I have the time. The Tour articles I've seen are in excellent shape, probably partly because they follow a well-established template. I'll see if I can review the 1971 one as well, if I'm active at FAC when it comes up. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:55, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:University of Reading shield.svg

Thanks for uploading File:University of Reading shield.svg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Robminchin (talk) 20:49, 21 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Edit by Jmg38

Hello, just wanted someone's opinion on an edit by Jmg38. On Pablo Lastras he placed in the Team info box section all the name changes that Banesto went through as the rider was at the squad through many different names. I was wondering whether it should belong there or not. I am aware we don't do that on any other page. Cheers, Paulpat99 (talk) 07:50, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Paulpat99: Thanks for letting me know. You are correct, and I've undone his edit. BaldBoris 08:33, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
