Dash

BB, are you ready to reconsider now that we've worked out a clarified consensus on the role of dashes in names? Talk:An_Post-Chain_Reaction#Requested_move_22_December_2015. Dicklyon (talk) 18:18, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Dicklyon: I now support it per the consensus. There needs to be a serious cleanup though. All the Template:Cts need to be changed as well as everything not using it. I don't think every hyphen will ever get changed to a dash. I respect your need for change, but it's a VERY bold move. BaldBoris 19:17, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure not all hyphens should be dashes, but I'm willing to push in the right direction with your help. Dicklyon (talk) 20:38, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Caps

Boris, I think you're heading the wrong direction with the capitalizations. Sources seems clear on the continental and professional continental designations not being proper names. Dicklyon (talk) 02:11, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Dicklyon:, if you make a bold page move then have a responsibility to change all the other pages. I'm not getting in to a dissucsion on the move itself, but the mess left that's behind. This includes all references to it throughout wiki. I'm not saying you have to do it yourself, just don't do a page move and expect everything to magically fall in line. BaldBoris 02:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
True, I don't expect magic, but I do sometimes leave things halfway done. Dicklyon (talk) 02:57, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

RE: OLINK

Rather than clutter up the FLC page, I'm answering here. The guideline says, Generally, a link should appear only once in an article, but if helpful for readers, a link may be repeated in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, hatnotes, and at the first occurrence after the lead. The latter is not mandatory. Also, there's a reason why 'first' occurrence is explicitly stated. Vensatry (talk) 12:54, 20 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Vensatry: Fair enough, I didn't read it exactly, but you know what rules/guidelines are like here. TBH this is a non-issue for me as I can't remember the last time I came across someone that's done it. I think you're one going against the grain. I just don't understand the need to underlink in the references section. We'll just have to agree to disagree. BaldBoris 13:46, 20 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I never meant to underlink them in the refs. section. – either link all or just link the first occurrence alone, that's it. Vensatry (talk) 18:06, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wiggins

A new section has been added to the Bradley Wiggins article called Controversy over use of banned substances in terms of therapeutic use exemptions. As you improved the article to GA status I thought you might be interested in checking the section for grammar etc. --Racklever (talk) 13:13, 25 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Racklever: Yes, spotted it straight after he added it, but it just gave me headache and I hoped someone else would sort it. I have no interest in that side of cycling and put up the blinkers. The clear anti-Sky sentiment meant it was only a matter of time until something was put up, as with Chris Froome#Physiology. For me to keep my Wiki work going I stay away from controversy and potential edit wars. I think it needs trimming down to be more encyclopedic. Re the CE, I got it copy edited by WP:GOCE, so I'm no help there. BaldBoris 21:42, 25 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:26, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dirty Dozen (bicycle competition)

Hi Bald Boris. Wondering if you could take a quick look at Dirty Dozen (bicycle competition) and clarify if it's still "stub class" or if the content + sourcing is sufficient for it to be considered start class. Thanks in advance! joepaT 21:38, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Joep01: Hi Joe, how's it going? It's definitely Start-Class now, great work! It needs {{Infobox cycling race}}. BaldBoris 23:57, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Forgot to ask how it how do feel about getting the LeMond article up to FA? I just read my oppose comment and I can't believe what asshole I was (bad day I think, sorry). I recently created the Tour de France task force, and it would be great to have it a legend as one of the featured articles. I'll keep it mind to chip in. Also, I'm wondering what your favourite Tour was and if you've ever thought about working on one. BaldBoris 00:12, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@BaldBoris:Hi mate! All good here. Decided to get back into editing wikipedia for awhile at least. Still would like to get Greg LeMond up to FA status if I can find a partner-in-crime to work on it! ;) Thanks, re. Dirty Dozen. Do I just swap "start" for "stub" on the talk page, or do I have to delete any categories or something in the mainspace? I'll add that infobox, and am also working on getting at least one picture from this year's race into Commons under the correct license so it can be added to article. Cheers! joepaT 00:14, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
haha I actually got an "edit conflict" trying to reply - we were both mentioning Greg Lemond and FA-class. No worries about any comments way back when. It's all good. joepaT 00:15, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
All good then. I've already updated it to Start-Class on the talk page. As long as you took the photo or can provide a licence from Flickr or another website, just use the Commons UploadWizard. BaldBoris 00:24, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

TdF taskforce

Love the work on that so far; have keeping a view on the main page where the GAN/FLC have been coming up and heartening to see the ones you've put some hard graft into coming up! Looking forward to getting stuck in myself, once I've finished ranting about Wikidata and finished up work for the holidays – I used to be a proficient editor here until this year for goodness sake! Craig(talk) 22:54, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Cs-wolves: That's great to hear! I wanted to concentrate my work on one race and learn on the way, and there's no better than Le Tour. I always see you popping up on my watchlist, so you must be do some good. Your work on the 2011 stages helped my doing the overview. Need to do it for 2014, then have a go at some old Tours. It's good because there's enough info on them out there (apart from the classification leadership). That whole Wikidata stuff is a bloody nightmare. BaldBoris 00:28, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@BaldBoris: That's the best way for it! I remember, it must have been about 18 months ago now, there used to be a quality YouTube channel that all the old Channel 4 reviews of le Tour; Richard Keys on presenting duties with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen on the comms. However, ASO dinged the channel for copyright violation. Chickasmith if memory serves correctly. I was using it to do the 1988 Tour de France classification table, and then I forgot about it. I will get back to it, I guarantee. When? That's another matter. I've been trying to catch up for a long time. Ever since 2014, I fell behind – I think when I went to the Tour Series for the first time in Edinburgh – and have never caught up. So I have been trying to flesh out any missing results. I'm still at June 2014, and that's what I want to get back up-to-date first of all. However, my enthusiasm for editing on here is starting to wane; fast-nature job tires me out, and I'm actually going to some of the cycling events now – 2016 alone has been two nights at the Tour Series and three days total at the Tour of Britain. It took nearly a month to get all the Tour of Britain photos up due to the lack of time that I had. Good to see 2012 going towards FA; think that was the last Tour I could categorically devote all my time too; main page looks absolutely superb compared to the last time I saw it, so kudos on the work. Glad my ramblings were of some assistance. As soon as I seen the rosters, it made an already bad day (at that time) worse and lit the blue-touch paper once XyZAn initiated the discussion. I felt as if I may have harangued the discussion, but like you, I just don't see the improvement. Especially when somebody brought the guidelines on Wikidata up... Made for interesting reading. But yeah, happy to help when I get the chance to deal with the old Tours. Giro and Vuelta next! ;-) Craig(talk) 14:37, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Cs-wolves: Oh right I'd not really thought of that. Did they show all the classifications? 1974–1985 are needed, with the exception of 1976. My attempt at 1978 (see my sandbox) using newspaper archives was unsuccessful as I couldn't find them all. I have guessed a few of them that seem obvious, with stage type and GC... But some I'd rather not guess. Luckily the ones that are unlikely to be put on YouTube have already been done. I think ASO is a bit of a joke. They should really have all of them online (I mean WTF). Very frustrating, feel like I'm treasure hunting. Regarding 2012, there needed to be at least one Tour FA. The 2012 Tour good topic would become a featured one as well. What do you think about the note about the Souvenir Henri Desgrange? Had a look at some of those pics before. Scotland doesn't get enough visits by the ToB IMO. Is it the lack of tarmac in the Highlands? BaldBoris 08:54, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@BaldBoris: It varied by stage really; some stages you would get the classifications for the stage and the overall, and sometimes you would not get anything. I think I started resorting to Mundo Deportivo for the teams classification, if I couldn't work out the jersey holders from the video. It was such a quality channel, but now they seem to be spread about YouTube. Some CBS, some Channel 4 and the newer stuff on Eurosport, ITV4 and the like. ASO, which of course has only been around since 1992, but nuking everything beyond that as well. Sad really. Mind you, I have a DVD set of the Tour de France that I got last Christmas which I haven't got round to viewing yet. This one. Might get round to it in my time off. The archives on LeTour.fr don't seem to be fully up-to-date there, which is very weird. The featured topic was something I had completely forgotten about; excellent! The Souvenirs are a weird thing; especially if the Galibier (which the Desgrange one is customary) is not on the itinerary. Naturally it should pass to the Tourmalet, but the Tourmalet is already covered by the Goddet one. I think the wording is fine as it is, because if we start going down the road of trying to explanation how the souvenirs are passed about, it could go up to about three, four lines!
The Tour of Britain, and more to an extent, The Women's Tour suffer from the overly English nature of their races. Okay, England is the biggest constituent of the United Kingdom, and should have the majority of the race, but Scotland and Wales (yes, Northern Ireland should be included too but it would be difficult logistically to bring it into week-long races) should be a major part of the race. Some of the best stages in the recent history of the Tour of Britain have actually been in Wales – Caerphilly Mountain, the Tumble to name but a few. Which is why the Scottish Mountains should get involved. I wouldn't say it's a lack of tarmac. There are very few high passes in Scotland; the Stelvio Pass is four times higher for example, but you could certainly make a mountain-top finish, like they did for Hartside Fell in 2015. I really don't see the need for it to finish in London each year though, which is another way that the Scottish and especially the Welsh stages lose out as a whole.
The statistics don't lie in how under-represented the countries are: Wales has had eight full stages (2004, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), a stage start with an English finish (2016) and two stage finishes after an English start (2013, 2014), while Scotland has had nine full stages (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016), a stage start with an English finish (2015) and a stage finish with an English start (2015). We could technically class that as Wales 9.5 stages and Scotland 10. There have been 99 scheduled stages of the Tour of Britain since it recommenced. Disproportionate to the land area, severely. That said, the two times I've been to the Carlisle to Kendal stage (within reasonable travelling distance by train - couple of hours to Kendal each way), the stages have been absolutely corkers. Stick a few ramps up to the finishes, and you get excitement in all stages. Craig(talk) 11:29, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Cs-wolves: They badly need doing. I'm going to have a crack at getting them done, starting with the most recent. You can't get an article up to GA without it. All the final standings need to be the top ten as well. Full GCs are all done. The first two DVDs are a condensed story of the history. They don't have the classifications of each stage, let alone the stage results. I don't know why they still put the two DVDs about you know who in the updated version.
Basically, it's the Tour of England... I think it's reliant on sponsors, and in turn they need to be going through and finishing in populated areas to get the best out it. The majority of people will only go outside their door or into their local town to watch it. There's probably a lot more reasons. Sadly that's the way it is. I'd love for it to spend half the time in our (your) mountains. BaldBoris 09:53, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@BaldBoris: I'll help whenever, and wherever I can. Once I get up to see with the major results, up to date with any races that can go to GA from 2012 or 2013 (Got a second Paris–Nice up there in August), and any other unassociated articles (glad I got the Cancellara list out, because that was long overdue), I should have enough time left. Oh... I don't think I'm going to enjoy the history as much as I ought, with that review! Oh well. Might just rewatch Road, Senna or in my opinion, one of the best sporting documentaries of recent times, TT3D: Closer to the Edge.
It would have been an interesting situation had Scotland got the independence vote in 2014; who knows what the future holds in regards to that... It was good that Scotland got two nights of the Tour Series, because the crowds were large both in Edinburgh in 2014 and Motherwell in 2015, which saw both back for 2016. I can't see us being so fortunate with Sweetspot for 2017 - but it'll be interesting to see how they approach the next few years, especially with the Worlds coming t'Yorkshire in 2019. I, like you, would love to see a Scottish mountain stage, mind you. That would sort the men from the boys! Craig(talk) 21:12, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Cs-wolves: Of course I'm not telling you what to do... Anything whenever would be great. I make that four of the PN GA now. One rider rider with a monster list (which I expanded) is Roger De Vlaeminck, but as the article is lacking so there's not much point. What do you think qualifies a split? Just had a check and there's a few team wins that need splitting off as well. God those Wikidata rosters are bad. Of course the history DVDs are good, I'm saying what it's not. Senna was on TV the other night but it had already started, need to check it out. Not as much of an F1 fan as I used to be. I mean people say cycling is boring...

Ah yeah, I know... What I was meaning that I wouldn't mind helping, it's more of a case of when I do get the chance. Yeah, only one out of the last five Paris–Nice races that isn't GA is 2014. Which I had to look up to see who won again, because that's how memorable it was. I think if the article is already sizable - for instance Sagan was at almost 100k bytes, while Cancellara's was at 171k bytes - and that the rider has a large amount of wins, say 60 or something like that, it can be done. I think the RDV article would need some context before splitting the results out. Ah I see, I may have misread that (lack of sleep, likely cause). Yeah, I caught the end of it after coming in from a night out in Glasgow, but I was so shattered, I never saw the end again. Formula One this season was dismal. Apart from Max Verstappen, I could count the amount of entertaining races (i.e. rain), on one hand. Out of 21. Shocking. Fat tyres back next year, so hopefully that'll liven it up. I HOPE.
