Zubaida Rahman (Bengali: জোবাইদা রহমান) is a Bangladeshi physician, and the wife of politician Tarique Rahman.[3][4]

Personal life
editBorn Zubaida Khan on 18 May 1972 in Sylhet, she is the daughter of Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, Chief of the Naval Staff of Bangladesh during the regime of Ziaur Rahman. She descended from an Afghan chieftan who settled in Bengal during Mughal rule.[5][6] He served as the Minister of Communications and Agriculture in the government of Hussain Muhammad Ershad.[7]
General M. A. G. Osmani is the uncle of Zobaida Rahman, the commander-in-chief of Bangladesh's war of independence. She is the cousin of Amnesty International's former Secretary General Irene Khan.[8]
Zobaida married Tarique Rahman in 1993.[5] After two years she joinied the BCS health cadre in 1995.[5] After Tarique's release from prison in 2008, she took a study leave and went to London to treat Tarique.[9] Currently staying there.[10]
Career
editZobaida studied medicine from Imperial College London and completed her MSc with record marks and gold medal. She joined the public service as a doctor in 1995 after topping the Doctors Civil Service (BCS) examination. Zobaida had married Tarek two years earlier.[10] The government cancelled her job on September 2014.[11]
Zia family members and two top leaders of BNP were convicted in the corruption case, although Zobaida Rahman's leadership of the party was publicized, but she never participated in the National Assembly elections or was seen in direct politics.[8][4] In 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed commendation for Zubaida Rahman, endorsing her potential as a promising political figure.[12]
Cases and convictions
editZubaida Rahman received a three-year prison term in connection with a corruption case initiated by the Anti Corruption Commission in 2007.[13][14] Additionally, her spouse Tarique Rahman was sentenced to nine years of incarceration.[15][16]
