regarding business articles - Companies edit

I suggest having some criterea for notability of companies more stringent than wikipedia's, possibly appearance in the top 100 global companies (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2007/full_list/) or high global-historical importance.

Dialectric (talk) 13:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Problem is that some smaller companies appear in business studies syllabus also some big companies have crumby (anti-business POV) articles. But I need to go through them. Thanks for the help by the way, the above is very good. We have about a month to go before the final final cut for 2008/9--BozMo talk 16:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

History / General history - History of Limerick - overly specific, suggest history of Ireland instead

History / Historians, chroniclers and history books - Yuri Knorosov - linguist rather than historian, interesting work, but maybe not as important as others listed in category

History / Military History and War - Hero of Ukraine - recently created award of non-global-historical importance.

History / Military History and War - Hero of the Russian Federation - recently created award of non-global-historical importance.

History / General history - History of the Portuguese Communist Party - overly specific

History / General history - History of Burnside - overly specific, suggest history of Australia instead

Category Science / Biology / Mammals suggested deletions edit

Suggest remove of dog breeds - dog is already included, and 4 arbitrarily selected breeds are not representative.

  • Science / Biology / Mammals - Basset Hound
  • Science / Biology / Mammals - Afghan Hound
  • Science / Biology / Mammals - Boston Terrier
  • Science / Biology / Mammals - Island Fox - rare USA fox

Question: People - Human Scientists category edit

Is Human Scientists a British term? It's a bit confusing to a US reader, since all scientists are human. Maybe "Health Sciences", "Medical Sciences", or "Human Health and Psychology" would work better for a category title.

Dialectric (talk) 14:21, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well half the google references to "Human Sciences" are US but I agree the term "Human Scientist" may be confusing. I will look through what's actually there and see if the alternatives are better. --BozMo talk 14:27, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

October 2008 Update edit

Its nice to see the project progressing - I took a look through the 2008/9 version now online, and have a few suggestions:

  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - listed under category children's book. is not a children's book.
True but it is in the school reading curriculum. I will double list it

  • The Shawshank Redemption - again, inappropriate movie for children as mentioned above, not high historical importance.
Agreed. I'll do that
  • McFly - again, non-notable band. Many more important bands aren't included.
Agreed thanks.
  • archaeology section lacks a picture; the archaeology article has some good ones - I could reformat one of them if you would like.
I'll do an version update and see what images come through the check on licence filter
OIC you mean on the subject menu, ok got it. --BozMo talk 15:00, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Homestar Runner - non-notable web comic.
ok, agreed to take out

And on a more general note, how are the keywords generated? They are a useful addition, but sometimes are confusing, or under-represent a topic. An example of the former, 'made' has a number of linked pages of varying relevance, an example of the later: 'muslims' links only Islam and September 11, 2001 attacks, when other topics, koran, etc. should be included for balance.

The keywords include only words which are in the article title or in the title of a redirect page pointing to the article. The relationship between the keyword and the topic appears we roll-over script. There is however a problem with vandal redirects (peanut head to Jimmy Carter and the like) so we do some manual corrections. --BozMo talk 14:58, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

October 2008 Update 2 edit

Here are three more areas, pictures, portals, and countries, which could use some minor changes.

Pictures. The following categories also lack pictures:

  1. geography -> african geography
  2. countries -> americas

Dialectric (talk) 10:25, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's really helpful thanks. --BozMo talk 11:52, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just so you know I have put in all these pictures on the database so assuming I didn't inadvertently pick one with a strange licence page that should go through. All the countries I have done on the DB. The portals are more complicated because everyone is slightly different and it is hard to version select with transcluded content but I will try to hack them all. --BozMo talk 12:19, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good - the portal changes are pretty minor; if they take a lot of work, seems they could be skipped. Dialectric (talk) 13:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

And two more suggested changes:

Good catches. Pitcairn is straightforward to fix (and is on a list of occurences of the word "incest" which I am working through). The image seems to be an overwrite vandal, will sort out. Last time round it was images of spongebob square pants we had to contend with. --BozMo talk 15:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

spelling error on front page: "This Selection includes thirty "Portal Pages", which give a brief overview of a topic and list some key articles int it."

'int' might be either in, or, better, within ?
