Propose we replace {{Zamuni}} with {{Infobox settlement}} edit

Per the discussion on Template_talk:Zamuni, I suggest that we progressively replace uses of {{Zamuni}} with {{Infobox settlement}}, and that we update the Task Force page to indicate that. This change will give us a lot more useful fields to use in the infoboxes, and improve the standardization relative to municipality articles from other countries. - htonl (talk) 09:42, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, you two have done most of the work on the municipalities of late and I doubt there will be any other feeback. I'll go ahead and update the wikiproject and start updating the municipalities. --NJR_ZA (talk) 14:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Naming conventions edit

I've been looking at the official establishment notices for Western Cape municipalities - they're linked from here - and it seems that the official names of the local municipalities don't actually include the word "Local". So, for example, "George Local Municipality" is actually called "George Municipality" - see section 4 here. I've checked a sample of local municipalities that have websites, and they also seem to leave out the word "Local" in their names.

So I propose a change to our naming convention: municipality articles should be named according to the official name in the establishment notice. Therefore local municipalities would be named "X Municipality", districts would be "Y District Municipality", and metros would be, well, whatever the notice says. - htonl (talk) 00:29, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not a big issue as far as I am concerned, we can keep it as it is or change it. Interestingly enough, the demarcation boards uses Local and the list on the link you provided uses Local, even though the content of the notices clearly state that that their names do not include Local. --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:02, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is odd, isn't it. I don't think we need to go out and change all of them immediately, but I think we should rename them progressively along with the {{Zamuni}} → {{Infobox settlement}} transition. Actually, this came up because I was looking for a source for the non-English names when I was adding {{Infobox settlement}}.
Anyway, I'm trying to find the establishment notices for other provinces. Unfortunately they don't make it as easy as the Western Cape. - htonl (talk) 12:57, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, the plot thickens. I've got to the other provinces' establishment notices on Sabinet (non-public, I have access to it through UCT) and it seems that in Gauteng, at least, the official name includes "Local". So, anyway, it seems to me that, given the ambiguity, the possibility for confusion, and the amount of work that would be involved, this is actually a bad idea. So I'm withdrawing this proposal. - htonl (talk) 13:37, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think they haven't quite settled yet whether their official naming policy is to include the "Local" or not. When I was reading through Integrated Development Plans from various local municipalities, quite a number of them referred to the municipality both ways at different places within the same document. Until a consistent naming standard is actually established, I second the withdrawal of this proposal. :) -AtticusX (talk) 18:00, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article update and cleanup drive edit

Just a note to say that I've finished uploading all the locator maps for the new municipal boundaries. They're all named with "(2016)" at the end just as the previous lot had "(2011)". - htonl (talk) 18:06, 11 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Fold this into Politics task force? edit

Now that we have the Politics task force which covers politics and government more generally, should we consider closing this task force down and folding it into that one? - htonl (talk) 18:05, 11 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

There's more to municipalities than only politics; geography, demographics, economics, etc. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 05:13, 12 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
