Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Islam/Members

In 1900 Muslims only numbered 200 million followers or 12% of the world population. This percentage drastically increased over the last 100 years due to higher birth rate in Muslim majority countries.[1][2] Pew Research have estimated the number will be around 2.2 billion in 2030 and 2.8 billion, or 30 percent of world population, in 2050.[3][4]

In Muslim world article user Manticore had deleted this sentences with different reason. First he claimed it was out of topic, poor written (it could targetted non English contributors), and wikipedia not a Crystal Glass (but in Religion Growth Population had cited Pew Research estimated). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Humanise (talkcontribs) 07:43, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Clean up edit

Hi I think this list seriously needs to be re-organized. There are a lot of members with only a small amount of edits in the top part of the list.--Peaceworld 19:34, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Active members criteria edit

To re-organize I'm proposing to set up a criteria for editors to be listed in the active members list. My preliminary thought is to place a minimum requirement of 1000 edits (which is the limit ive used to move down some of the editors). However, that doesn't necessarily give any indication to the quality of the editor in general and contributions to the Islam related articles in particular. The point of this is that it should help to give a more focus strategy in teamwork between more active members. Thoughts?--Peaceworld 21:35, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

No interest shown by any editor so i've gone up with the proposition.--Peaceworld 17:31, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looks good :). There's not much active users in-general. Many articles were tagged, requesting experts, but no-one shows up :(. I'll try to help on the list this week, taking the unqualified (edit-wise) editors to the less-active list. Thanks for your good work. ~ AdvertAdam talk 06:13, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thankyou for helping out :) --Peaceworld 11:49, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
phew...sorted the list, another problem is that many haven't edited for some long time. do you propse anything? like 6 month or 1 year break from editing? --Peaceworld 11:20, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, the list is good to have, but we should focus on improving the actual articles. Do you have a plan for teamwork- I am willing to participate in developing a strategy for focused improvement of Islam related articles, which are currently very disorganized on WP. Shaad lko (talk) 11:55, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • That's great! I haven't thought of a plan yet, but I've been thinking that after we have somehow reduced the list to the most active current users, we should draw up a section on the Wikiproject Islam page near the top listing very few like 2-4 articles weekly or fortnightly that need work on and that are most relevant to Islam related articles. Maybe we should draw up 2-3 people to take up the responsibility of refreshing the list with different suggested articles to focus upon and to inform the active users on their talk pages to help improve the articles fortnightly. In that way we would have a goal of improving such and such articles by the end of x days. Is it a good idea? What do you propose?
  • Another thing is that as i mentioned before, the list still contains some dormant users. I realize that you haven't made many edits but that's irrelevant as long as your active. --Peaceworld 17:18, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I fully endorse your first point. Another thing that I had in mind is if we could come up with 2-3 must haves in each Islam article - its a nascent idea yet, but we could have, for example on each article, at least the following sections:
  • Views of non-Muslim scholars/experts
  • Views of different sects within Islam (Shia, Sunni, traditional vs. modernist, Ahmadiyya)
A template of that sort may help prevent a lot of edit-warring that we usually see on Islam articles. Regarding the second point, another criterion we can use (apart from edit count) is last edit date. It would require some work, but those who haven't edited in the last two months, can be considered dormant..? What do you suggest? Ideation and planning always result in something big ;) Shaad lko (talk) 17:52, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes a template would be a good idea, but I think that could be run and promoted independently. However, not all such sections may apply to all Islam-related articles. For example, views of different sects, where concepts and historical events are uniformly accepted.--Peaceworld 21:17, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Also i forgot to mention a 2 month edit break seems good to me.--Peaceworld 08:08, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Does the list of members have any purpose at all? William M. Connolley (talk) 18:19, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Currently, it doesn't have. I think that's what --Peaceworld is suggesting - to get to the list of active members, and ask them to collaborate on improving specific articles... Shaad lko (talk) 18:37, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Will, as Shaad 1ko pointed out, the current list seems purposeless...or on the other hand if there ever was a purpose it hasn't worked out. Cutting the list the down will help us to inform users that are most likely to respond and hence improve the articles. I have no Idea if this time it will work, but let's keep hopes high. It can never work if we don't have enough people willing to work together. Do you have any ideas, or thoughts though?--Peaceworld 21:17, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I was thinking about creating a bot that will automatically re-organize the list monthly. It would be fun, but I don't have the darn time. Sorry, I've also had a crazy weekend, regarding the list. What do you think of 6-months? Whoever comes back will definitely notice that his names needs to be up again, but I think a year is too much. Good work :) ~ AdvertAdam talk 10:22, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Yes a bot will make the task a little easier, but i'm going to wait a few days to see how many people show interest before making another step. Unfortunately not enough people have shown interest yet to make this feasible. In the meantime can users begin to suggest some articles below, we should focus on. --Peaceworld 08:59, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Template edit

Hi everyone, I have created a preliminary template to help forward the discussion. See here. I think a template would serve the purpose better than a section, to be placed below the current template on WP:WikiProject Islam. Please give ideas and thoughts. Thankyou! --Peaceworld 22:33, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Suggested articles edit

oh dear...the response is not very promising. I really think it's pretty innovative idea and very useful way of improving articles. However, not enough people have shown interest for it to be feasible so for now this idea unfortunately has to be terminated. Thank you to all those who showed an interest and responded.--Peaceworld 15:29, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
