UK fire service articles/FDNY BFI

Today, I started Kent Fire and Rescue Service - that's about 20 now out of more than 40 - just for England's FRS. When I started editing Wikipedia there were about four, so that's a massive improvement in a short space of time. If anyone wants to add to the mix - great. Info box at the bottom shows which articles are still needed. If you start a new one, don't forget to update the Fire service in the United Kingdom (see table), article with a Wikilink. While I'm here, I was thinking about starting an article on the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation, but I can't find any substantial info on the FDNY web. I have some experience of working with them in 1993 - but I need more concrete sources. Any thoughts? Escaper7 18:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I think any article detailing FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation should be included in the primary FDNY article. The FDNY article also needs to be cited in a variety of places if you would like to start that effort. --Daysleeper47 18:36, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm, I've devoted quite a lot of time to the FDNY article which was until recently lacking NPOV. I'll try and look over it again some time, but I'm trying to concentrate on UK articles as that's where my experience lies. I think FDNY is too long, and that's the only reason I'd like to see a BFI article. It was the subject of a book by Peter Micheels called Heat which I could use as a source for refs. All a bit complicated by Fire Marshal (should it be Fire marshal?), see: [Talk:Fire Marshal]. It does have a sub-section on FDNY's BFI. The question for me, is if the BFI is one of only a few, (or possibly the only) fire department arson investigation unit, that employs firefighters, trains them as marshals and gives them a gun that's quite interesting - especially to a UK reader where firefighters are never armed. I've seen those guys in their firefighting rig at an incident then strip back to collar and tie to investigate the crime. Regards Escaper7 23:44, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

In the US, the armed fire marshal is quite a common thing. The 6 FM's in my department are all armed and are law enforcement officers. All Pennsylvania State Fire Marshal's are also State Police officers. Feel free create the article if you like, but my experience is that the FDNY BFI is not much different than those elsewhere in the US. --Daysleeper47 04:20, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

More on UK FRS articles: These articles are growing on a day-by-day which is very good. If anyone wants it, heres a link to use a reference when citing "a brigade was formed under the Fire Brigades Act" Good reference for historical dates from LFB. That Wikifys into: Fire Brigades Act 1938 or (1938) - it's also listed on Wikipedia. I'll change some of the existing articles as and when, but any help appreciated. Hi, I'd like to ask if there's somebody who speaks german and would like to participate in the german Wikipedia: There's an article de:Feuerwehr in den Vereinigten Staaten (fire service in the US) which has been of mixed quality for a long time. I just added a paragraph on US equipment and tactics, but I have to admit it is all kind of second-hand-knowledge and I would be grateful if someone would bother to take a look at the article. Children and fire

A cautionary example in Der Struwwelpeter. In this situation, the best thing to do is to stop, drop and roll.

Hi, folks. This is not exactly in the project's scope, but there's no better place, so: I tried to find data on children playing with fire on Wikipedia, but it doesn't seem to be covered. The subject is notable and verifiable and as such should be included. I think we should start a new article by the name of children and fire, which could also cover such subjects as trying to hide from fire. Some possible sources are here, here, here, here, here and here. Additionally, match-games have apparently damaged Marske Hall and burned Namsos to the ground. Fire Department/Firefighting/Fire fighter/Fire Station

There has been discussion on the Fire station page about creating a seperate article for Fire Department (which currently redirrects to Fire Station). In the course of the discussion, we realized that there are several articles that are similar and perhaps should be merged. These are Firefighting, Fire fighter, Fire Department and maybe Fire station. There seems to be some repeated information in these articles, and merging them may be the best course of action. I've been adding to said discussion on the Fire station page, and I think those are really the big four of a Fire Service project. However, I noticed on the Firefighter page that it's tagged as not representing a worldwide view. Perhaps we could trim it down, and then have pages like "Firefighting in the United States" and "Firefighting in Europe" or a more specific country. Also, perhaps firefighting could be merged with firefighter (maybe), and fire department could take over fire station. Thoughts? I don't know where to go. I don't think Fire Department should "take over" fire station - they are different things. However, overall I think you have a good idea there, perhaps having one central "Fire Services" page, which would have a brief overview of the whole thing, then break it down into littler chunks - fire department (an agency), fire fighter (a person who fights fires), fire apparatus (the vehicles used by firefighters), fire fighting in fill in country, etc. Fire fighting could perhaps become the fire services central page, as it is kind of the main idea - fighting fires. There is a central page for the UK: Fire service in the United Kingdom I would propose anything that specifically rleates to the UK being added to this article. It's comprehensive but could do with a few more images. Fire should be a separate article because it's of interest to scientists - in other words it's a subject not soley relevant to firefighters. The terms fire station and fire house interchange between UK and US respectively; the terms fire and rescue service (correct definition) and fire department interchange between UK and US. I like to add history, uses, photos, and designs of Japanese Fire Stations. Maybe the Fire Station page could have a overall definition like.... "A place where fire fighters rest and store equipment." Just basic overview then go by each nation how their station is built, designed, and used. I like to make it a worldwide page. I like to start add my data to the page soon. Is this a good idea to make it a worldwide page?

I like the image a lot. Excellent. Is there a way to remove the background so the image is only the maltese cross? That way when I put it on a different colored background, it doesn't look awkward. Does that make sense. I'm not sure I am explaining well. --Daysleeper47 19:20, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Junior Firefighter

I believe that this article needs to be seperated and expanded. The idea of Junior Firefighters is a general statement. But each kind has its own wiki-worthy points of information. Being a former Explorer, I have a good amount of knowledge on that particular subject, but as for actual Juniors, Cadets and the such, each should be expanded, or given their own pages. I feel that expanding on them would suffice, but I am new to this WikiProject and think this should definetly be discussed.--FiftyOneWicked 21:32, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

2006 Kolkata leather factory fire - help required for GA status

Image problem

Hi,

Is there anyone in the project who is either aware of how to format images in articles or knows someone who is? Because a concern for a current attempt at FA (the one I mentioned above) involves resizing images in the article. While I have tried similar things previously, I always failed miserably, so it would be good if someone could just drop in and sort them out. The article is here and the concern is here. Cross-linking of trapped-occupant articles

We have Category:Fire disasters involving barricaded escape routes that includes some, and many articles (example: The Station nightclub fire) have annotated "See also" sections listing some. All pages' See also sections have to be updated manually when a new one is added. And overall, it feels like just duplicated work, with twice as much stuff to maintain and keep in sync (which it does not appear to be presently) and twice as many places to look to find a listing of Wikipedia's pages on this topic. Would it be better to do one or the other? Would category be the better choice (automatically adds pages to the page list) and then each See also section just say "Category:Fire disasters involving barricaded escape routes"? Alternately, could have a navbox template that contains the full annotated listing and then transclude it on each page. Only need to adjust it one place and it propagates into all pages, but the full see-also list might lead to a "list of events somewhat related by topic" growing disproportionately large on each event's page. Love to hear thoughts from others who maintain these pages. DMacks 07:11, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

I guess this is partially my fault, for starting this off (although when I did, it was a maintainably small amount for a See also section). When I had 1991 Hamlet chicken processing plant fire passed as an FA, we decided at the FAC (I can't remember who's idea it was, you could check there if it really matters) that we should limit the see also to other fires which had caused significant improvements to fire safety, and create a category for trapped-occupant fire articles. I ultimatly decided to further limit the See also to similar fires as well, and created the category you mentioned above. Linking to the category in the See also section sounds like a good way of solving the problem. I wonder if maybe some sort of list article might be a good idea as well/as an alternative? Ooh, something like List of fires that led to major advances in safety would be a good place for that annotated list. Could even add more text there explaining what those advances were for each, not just where/when notes, good centralized source for chronology of it all. Then all pages would be in the category, and the See-also on all pages would link to the List page? DMacks 18:49, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Yep, got it, that's what I'd been thinking. See also, as a standard (this is just a draft proposal for a standard, others please weigh in with your views, but I think this works well, even if it is my idea ;-) should contain the following:

• A link to the category (we could easily extend this standard to all fire articles simply by removing this critereon)
• A link to the list
• A link to any relevant article(s) covering related fire regulations (particulrly relevant where violations were present)
• Links to the current version(s) of the above if different from the above
• Anything else particularly relevant to the particular article, as See also sections generally do, to be determined on a case by case basis

Each fire's page doesn't need a see-also link to the category of "all fire-pages" since the page itself would be in that cat and hence the cat would be listed/linked at the bottom as usual. Conversely, if we have list-page for this subset of building fires, I don't think we also need a category for them. This personal-confusion aside, sounds great to me! Notability of wildland fires?

A question from someone who's not a project member: I am looking to see if there's some sort of a rule of thumb for the notability of wildfires...meaning, when is a fire notable enough to have an article about it? Would it depend on size? Structures/casualties? It seems that there's media coverage for many of our Southern California fires, but not a lot of individual articles. For instance, the White Fire in Kern County, CA...10,000 acres+ was the scene a couple days ago of the almost-crash of Tanker 910. I've mentioned the incident in the Tanker's article, but would a fire this size merit an article on its own? Thanks! AKRadecki^Speaketh 23:57, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Some areas are every year hit by large fires. I would find it trivial if every season for a selected area should be described. In stead these places could have seperate articles concerning the matter in general. For certain fires I would say the nobility is difficult to describe precisely. But as you mention there are certain matters to think through. As anything else I would say it is a matter of "general interest" - is it only interesting for a small group of people - how much can be written? --|EPO| ^da: 08:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Underground storage tank

I've been thinking about explanding this article after dealing with the "BP Next Door" discussion on the Charleston furniture warehouse fire talk page. However, none of the WikiProject Fire Service categories seem appropriate. It seems like there should be a category that covers fuel storage containers. HAZMAT if nothing else. I understand the HazMat possibility of underground storage tanks but am not sure where exactly to categorize them within WP:FD. There are no hazmat categories that I am aware of. If you have suggestions, I am more than open to hearing them. --Daysleeper47 17:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Collapse of the World Trade Center GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "World History-Americas" articles and just reviewed Collapse of the World Trade Center. I believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article if several issues are addressed. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues concerning sourcing and the lead that should be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I am leaving this message at this project page, along with the other relevant task forces/WikiProjects to the article, since the article falls under this topic and figured you might be interested in helping to improve the article further. The article needs just a few more inline citations and some minor cleanup, and if fixed, I'll pass the article.
