New Year Meetup

Hey guys, as I am back in London now and need to keep occupied I decided to organize an informal meetup this month. My proposed time and date would be 7pm , Saturday 12 January, 2008. Location: ?, somewhere relatively central and easy to get to and most importantly: has WiFi and is affordable. Anybody up for it? I would, personally, be against bringing it forward. It is a London meetup, not the UK one. However, if there are several people that want to travel then we could think about this and then also put some effort into maybe planning something along the lines of a collaboration or talks or something. Suggested Places for Future London Meetups

Pembury Tavern in Hackney (map)

It's a great pub. Free wifi. Excellent beers, and User:Psychonaut, User:Morwen and sometimes David Gerrard hang around there many Sundays anyway (playing board games). This was the location of Wikipedia:Meetup/London 7, we then tried to go to the same place for number 8 (old organisation details) That event never really came together properly. One of the reasons being that the pub wasn't easy enough for everyone to get to (basically not central enough)

Tollgate Tavern at Beckton E6, ASDA (beerintheevening.com)

Strikes me as further out than the Pembury pub in Hackney people whose location people complained about. Certainly, coming from South West London, that location would be very unappealing.--Peter cohen (talk) 18:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

West Ham and Plaistow NDC The Hub at Canning Town

I'm afraid that this may have the same problem of being away from the centre of town. There was a sentiment over at Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/London_8/Archive_1 that things needed to be central. I was perfectly happy with the Pembury original planned pub, but it's location in Hackney, which is actually more central than Plaistow was complained about. And a location that needs a bus journey after the tube would put as many people off as the Hackney site. under age for meetings in the pub

I've had a message from someone suggesting that there are Wikipedians who may be under age for meetings in the pub. There are therefore two aspects of accessibility.

1. What geographical location will be accessible to as many London Wikipedians as possible?
2. What type of venue will be accessible to as many LWs as possible?

Yeah or ....pubs. You know we don't force people to drink alcohol at these events. It's pretty quiet in the Penderel's Oak on a Sunday lunchtime. Very "family friendly". -- Harry Wood (talk) 12:47, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

As an (extremely late) follow-up, people "under age for meetings in a pub" would have to be 12 or younger, at which age I would hope their guardian would be present too, which obviates the need for a move of venue.

Advertising with the pub

I enjoyed my first time at the London meeting this month. I got there on the hour and, whilst I was on the lookout for young, nerdy-looking chaps (narrow-minded? perhaps), I ended up asking the bartender, who had no knowledge of the event. I think telling the staff on the bar about the meeting, as well as a bigger sign on the tables, would help prevent newcomers receiving strange looks having asked random pub-goers whether they knew anything about Wikipedia! Sue Gardner is coming
