Figured I would start this page up so people in Houston can sign up if they are interested.

User:Pharos suggested that a Wikinic should be held in Houston. Are any Houston area editors interested in holding a Wikinic? If you decide to hold a Wikinic, the suggested time frame is on or around June 23. Some suggested parks could be: Hermann Park, Discovery Green, Eleanor Tinsley Park, Market Square Park, the Buffalo Bayou area in Downtown, or other major Downtown parks. Market Square Park option edit

I'd like to suggest Market Square Park for a place to meet up. It's a smaller and more friendly park that a lot of ppl aren't familiar with yet. Got some nice local businesses next to it, and it's where critical mass meets up too. Also, it's a lot easier to get to via public transit than DG. Satchimon (talk) 04:04, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reddit picnic merge proposal edit

Please forgive the intrusion, but I would like to make a proposal. On June 23rd, a reddit meetup is being held in Memorial Park, Houston. Rather than forcing some folks to choose between the two events, why not share resources and venue? The reddit event will be well attended and food and drinks are already being provided. We would be happy to share, even with members of the Wikipedia community that have not yet discovered reddit. I apologize for putting this out there at the last minute, but I would like to do everything I can to make both events a tremendous success. For info and inquiries, please see our reddit meetup page.--108.83.227.32 (talk · contribs)

Thanks for the generous offer; it is indeed an unfortunate coincidence that it's the same day, and working with Free Culture friends is a great thing in general. Unfortunately however, I don't think it's practical to merge the two events successfully, because believe it or not, the reddit crowd for this type of event is much much larger than the Wikipedia crowd (maybe a dozen vs several hundred). We tried something similar for Seattle last summer, and none of the Wikipedians were able to even find each other! However, we'll set the Houston Wiknic for earlier in the day, so that it will be possible to attend both events.--Pharos (talk) 02:19, 20 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

We'd like to invite representative(s) from the group who have some experience in organizing the local meetups, to join the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) committee, our monthly IRC meetings, and the associated wikimediaus-l mailing list, to help advance real-life Wikimedian activities in the US, including Wiki Loves Monuments photography in September and Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetups in October/November.--Pharos (talk) 16:59, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any luck with the Wiknic? edit

Was there at least a little wiknicking going on I hope? Best wishes for future wiki-meets!--Pharos (talk) 19:31, 28 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Great American Wiknic 2014 - Houston - July 6ish? edit

Do we have any volunteers to pick a time and park location for a WP:Wiknic in Houston this summer? The "national" date is July 6, but any date around then that's convenient to locals would be equally good.--Pharos (talk) 04:32, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
