Details first: A session at eChicago will be a Wikipedia meetup. (Past eChicagos: http://echicago.illinois.edu.) This year:

• eChicago 2010: Seizing the Broadband Moment
• Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1
• UIC Student Center West, 828 S. Wolcott, Medical District stop on Blue Line or Polk stop on Pink Line

Questions

Is this an informal gathering or a panel discussion? Also, what is the "broadband moment" that is being seized? Are we seizing this moment or commenting on the seizure? Amerique^dialectics 18:06, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

This is an informal meetup on the same day that two or three wikipedians will be invited to participate on a panel. I don't know about the moment. Yes--we at eChicago (echicago.edu.illinois) would like to confirm the participation of 2-3 wikipedians on a panel discussion, which can be organized however you wish, and will be 10:30-11:45 on Saturday, May 1. The "moment" is meant to reflect the investment into broadband infrastructure through the economic stimulus funds, and how individuals, organizations, and communities hope to take advantage of new capacity. It is also a time just to share and learn about how people are using technology in Chicago to enhance their lives/create and take opportunities. There will be community groups, academics, government, libraries, and others represented. It would be great to basically hear from the panel how the wikipedia community overlays on top of the Chicago community for Chicago wikipedians. What does it mean to be a wikipedian and a wikipedian from Chicago? How do meetups work? Probably most people think of wikipedia as just the content. So the panel can provide insight on the dynamic community of wikipedia. This can also be an opportunity for an informal meetup. I have been leaving messages with User_talk:Katewill#Chicago_Meetup about the lack of interest of Chicago wikipedians. I have also mentioned that possibly Josh Levin might be interested in being a panelist depending upon the topic. I mentioned, that if no other Chicagoans are interested in meeting up, then I can not do anything but come myself. I would be willing to be a one-man panel. Also, with a slightly modified topic Levin might be interested. If you listen to his podcast noted on Katewill's page, you might note that he might be the type of person to ask me all these questions that you just posed above. Maybe he could be a moderator for such a session. Is this a desirable thing? Tony, sorry for not picking up on your messages to Kate before. I am even less than a newbie when it comes to wikipedia, so I have to ask for a little patience. I think there is some latitude on how we use the time. In most of the other sessions, there will be panels of 3 along with a moderator. Format for those is mostly 10-15 presentations followed by Q&A; some are going to be more like moderated dialogue. You don't have to speak to broadband infrastructure and investment specifically--others will focus on that--but more to the questions I pose above, and talk about the Chicago Project. What would be of interest to other wikipedians--what would they like to share? We are open to Josh Levin moderating--where is he physically located? As to the meet up--you can use some or all of the time as a meet up as an alternative, and hopefully allow conference participants who attend. Finally, there will be a public computing center where people are sharing online resources in 15 minute teaching sessions. Would you (or anyone else) like to demonstrate somethng related wikipedia? Oh. You want presentations. I doubt that any other Chicago wikipedians than I will be on the stage. In fact, I think it might be scaring away our meetup commitments. I will try to prepare something and talk with Mr. Levin about moderating. I'll have to throw something together this weekend. I am pretty sure Mr. Levin is located far away, but maybe I can get him interested. I think I only signed up officially for Saturday, but I am available for Friday and had hoped for a panel session separate from the meetup. I might go to listen to Tony. He has built an impressive infrastructure in the WP:Chicago project and a dazzling array of Chicago-centric featured quality articles. I am not as much of a "good Chicago Wikipedian" myself, however so would not have as much to contribute to a panel discussion. However, another Chicago Wikipedian, User:Cool Hand Luke, sits on the Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee. He would be a good discussant to get for a perspective on WP's dispute resolution process. I will be in town, so I do plan on attending this meetup. I'm tentatively interested in being on the panel, but I will need to take a look at what's going on in the eChicago conference. Funny is fine--and it doesn't have to be about technology, but more how technology--wikipedia--is being used by Chicagoans and/or for Chicago. There will be a laptop, projector, and access to the internet. Don't feel like you have to fill the time with a formal presentation. If you want to devote some (all?) of the time to a meetup, that's fine. There would probably be eChicago conference participants interested in joining in or listening, if that's ok. Oh, and if you want a separate time/space for a meetup, we can do that too. You need to have email enabled on your own account to email a user. Go to [1] and register an email address under "email options" at the bottom of the page.
