Are you interested in a Main Page section?

Hi, I'm from the 2008 main page redesign proposal and I am interested in adding a new section that will display a Featured Portal, Topic, or List daily. (I don't think there's enough to have one of each a day for several years.) However, I am not involved with any of these projects and don't want to champion the cause myself. There has already been talk of Featured Sounds on the Main Page; and we would be willing to make combinations like the Beethoven mock-up there, featuring related lists, portals, topics, etc. on one day. I would appreciate your feedback here, because I'm posting this message in a number of places and would like a unified discussion. Thanks, HereToHelp (talk to me) 18:06, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Revamping review process

Just like any other system, it needs to be updated to deliver the most results using the least efforts. We have streamlined the featured portal review process. Instead of having the portal to go through 2 nominations just to be removed from featured status, we have removed the bureaucracy and instruction creep by combining the featured portal review and featured portal removal candidate together.

Over the next few weeks, we will initiate a sweep drive to ensure that our existing featured portals continues to meet our criteria. OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:34, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

MCB portal

I and others have expressed a dislike for the Portal:Molecular_and_Cellular_Biology which is looks quite backwards and not-updated. Could I have some advice (sections, how-to and style) on it? thanks --Squidonius (talk) 10:10, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Contents pages navigation proposal

A proposal to add topical links to all of the contents pages has been made. As part of that proposal, the navigation bar at the top of these contents pages would look like this.

All who read this invitation, please respond to the proposal, Portal talk:Contents#Adding topical links to contents pages navigational headers and footers, as you see fit. Regards, RichardF (talk) 15:30, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Portal:Athletics

I'm a bit on standby with this candidacy, somebody can tell me if the portal is now OK to be FP? --Kasper2006 (talk) 06:23, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Possible RfC regarding articles to be selected for inclusion in FPs

I was wondering whether it might not be a bad idea to maybe file an RfC for broad community discussion regarding what types of articles we might like to see among those included in portals. Currently, the "default" seems to be to include primarily GA and better quality articles, and I obviously can see including those articles which have been declared among the best we have. The occasional problem with that, perhaps, is that these articles will often, to an extent, be among the less significant articles relating to the specific topic of the portal, and, in some really broad cases, like maybe Portal:Religion for instance, the specific article might be of such comparative lack of importance to the topic of the portal that one might have to read through several levels of subarticles before actually encountering even the first mention of the topic of that article, which might make them, to a degree, comparatively "trivial" to the stated topic of the portal.

Having said that, as I think many of us know, some of the most significant articles directly relating to the stated subject area of a portal are in rather poor shape, if they even actually exist at this point. Maybe one way to go might be to arrange some form of "alternating" choice of quality or significance, but I do personally think that it is almost certainly in the best interests of the portals to see if there is any way to try to bring more attention to some of the most significant articles related to those topics, and maybe find a way to, effectively, increase the "usability" of the portals, particularly for those who may not be as familiar with the topics as others. That's a good suggestion, in theory. In practice, as you said, many topics do not have high-quality high-importance articles. For those topics which do have good important articles, it's certainly a good idea, though. YPNYPN 04:08, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
The featured portal criteria say "Because portals promote the best of Wikipedia's content, a featured portal is selective in what it displays. It showcases only high-quality content that is preferably already featured." Wikipedia:Portal guidelines (not part of the criteria) say that the selected articles should be "of high quality, either a featured article, a good article or one which deals with its subject substantially or comprehensively". So the preference is for FAs/FLs/GAs, but it's not a rigid rule. I can see the difficulties here, though - whilst for overarching topics such as "religion", it will likely to be difficult to get sufficient "core" articles to GA/FA standard, it dilutes the standard of promoting the best of Wikipedia's content if featured portals in such areas are allowed to show poor-quality content. I think the acceptability of sub-GA articles in a featured portal candidate is likely to depend on the context i.e. the number of such articles and what percentage of the articles in the portal they form, and the importance/significance of the articles to the portal as opposed to possible alternatives. But don't let me stop you having an RFC - the more attention that portals and featured portals get, the better - and this page is only on a few watchlists at the moment, I suspect. The Main Page Featured Portal drive was successfully completed.

This was a collaborative initiative created to get all portals linked from the top-right of the Main Page to Featured Portal quality status.

Thank you to all who participated or contributed towards this quality improvement effort in some way.
