This course introduces students to the substantial role psychology plays in our experience of both disease and well-being. We will also learn how an integration of biological, psychological, and social factors can both establish and maintain these phenomena. Students in this class will be called upon to effectively digest empirical research reports one week, and journalism, literature, or memoir the next. Every level of analysis is open to consideration, measurement, and exploration from the organelle, to the organism, to the organization. Thus, health psychology is a expanding constellation of “fields within a field,” and we will attempt to cover as much of that breadth as we reasonably can in one semester. At the same time, we will pay special attention to those areas I have the most professional experience with: cancer, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, and solid-organ transplant, to name a few.
