This is the Streets and Highways Code as it existed in 1963, after the renumbering law had passed but before it was implemented. The new number is given for all routes, as well as the current equivalent. Information on amendments is not complete. Several repealed sections are also included.

    • 335.5. Notwithstanding any provision of law requiring the expenditure of funds received from the Federal Government for federal aid secondary highways, together with matching funds from the State Highway Fund, upon county roads, the department shall withhold the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40847) of such federal funds and state matching funds from those required to be allocated for projects upon county roads on the federal aid secondary system in Humboldt County, and shall expend such funds upon that portion of Route 35 in Humboldt County until such portion is constructed to standards required for the federal aid secondary system.
    • The aggregate of the funds required to be withheld and appropriated by this section shall not exceed the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40,847). The appropriation made by this section shall be available for expenditure without regard to fiscal years.
    • If, prior to the effective date of the amendment to this section enacted at the 1959 Regular Session of the Legislature, funds exceeding in the aggregate the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40,847) have been withheld by the department from allocations for federal aid secondary county road projects in Humboldt County for the purposes of this section, such excess amounts shall be allocated for federal aid secondary county road projects in Humboldt County to the extent such excess amounts have not been expended as of such effective date.

    • 356.5. The commission and the department are expressly authorized to abandon and to relocate any portion or portions of route 56 as now established and laid out between the intersection of Route 56 and Route 55 south of San Francisco and the town of Farallon City, in San Mateo County, and to take any and all action necessary for such abandonment and relocation. Such abandonment may be effected prior to relocation and pending relocation the commission may adopt and maintain any traversable road around the portion or portions so abandoned.

Upon the completion of construction of said interim road, and pursuant to said agreement, the county shall assume jurisdiction and all responsibilities of maintenance for the period above provided. The road shall be known and designated as the "Ben Hulse Highway."

    • 526.2.       • (a) The Federal Government shall have made available all funds necessary for the construction of said route, other than funds provided under paragraph 2.
      • (b) The Federal Government and the Cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach shall have granted a sufficient and adequate right of way without cost to the State of California for that portion of said route traversing lands owned or controlled by each of them.
      • (c) The authorized representatives of the Cities of Long Beach and Los Angeles and of the appropriate agency of the Federal Government shall have approved the proposed alignment and the proposed location of all major structures on the route submitted by the State Department of Public Works.
    • 2. Any city or county may contribute to, and the California Highway Commission may allocate moneys from the State Highway Fund for the improvement of portions of Route 231 on the mainland when such improvement is found necessary to complete an integrated system of freeways between San Pedro, Long Beach and the Civic Center in the City of Los Angeles.
    • 3. If funds from sources other than state highway funds have not been made available for the construction of all portions of said Route 231 that are not on the mainland prior to January 15, 1953, said Route 231 shall on that date cease to be a state highway and this section shall have no further force or effect.

    • The commission shall allocate from time to time as federal funds, other than regular federal aid apportionments, are made available as required in this section from the State Highway Fund the sum of twenty million dollars ($20,000,000), for the construction of said route. Such money shall be made available in equal parts in the five fiscal years next succeeding the effective date of this section to the extent that such federal funds are available for matching purposes in each of such years. The allocation of money provided for in this section shall be made out of moneys contained in the State Highway Fund available for construction of state highways in County Group No. 1, but which is not subject to Section 188.4 of this code; and expenditures from such allocation shall be credited against the expenditure required to be made pursuant to Section 188.4 in the counties in which the route provided for in this section lies until June 30, 1962.

    • The commission may allocate from the State Highway Fund the necessary funds for the construction of all or any portion of said route when the County of Los Angeles and the Cities of Los Angeles and Torrance have entered into a co-operative agreement with the department wherein the said cities and county shall furnish to the state of California without charge all right-of-way necessary and agree to pay one-half the cost of plans and construction.

    • Route 292 shall be added to the state highway system at the time the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara have acquired all rights-of-way necessary to construct a freeway on this route to state freeway standards and have conveyed said rights-of-way to the State without charge; provided, that the commission and the department may take all steps necessary to locate and design said freeway or any portion thereof prior to the time it is added to the state highway system.
