ʻO Wikipikia, the Hawaiian Wikipedia, was started in 2006, and now is doing well, with 233 users, and 1,351 pages. The Hawaiian Wikipedia is fully functional (although still in its infancy), and if you speak any Hawaiian, your contributions are welcome. Assistance with creating and expanding pages is needed and template designers are welcome. The Main Page is in need of a design update, so there is work to be done.
The Hawaiian Wikipedia is the only Wikimedia project written in the Hawaiian language, but other sites can also be used to spread the language. Visit Wiktionary and help create dictionary entries of Hawaiian words. Go to Wikispecies and add the Hawaiian names for animals. Feel free to use Hawaiian Dictionaries for help.
To submit Hawaii articles to DYK, follow the selection criteria: . First, find a Hawaii-related topic that interests you. Then, decide if you are going to write a new article or expand an existing article, like a Hawaii stub. New articles must not be older than five days and should be at least 1.5 kilobytes in length before submission. Already existing articles must be expanded fivefold within a five day period. Special attention should be paid to the "hook"-an interesting fact cited in the article with an inline citation. Images, while not necessary, can help illustrate your hook, but the image must be relevant and free (PD, GFDL, CC); no fair use images will be accepted.
Well, it has 1356 articles, and growing slowly. In the wiki's history, there have been a number of contributors who knew Hawaiian but have come and gone. I hope to stay for a while. Right now, just User:Kamehameha and I are relatively active. There's a ton of stubs, but a couple have some length.
I noticed that you worked on it a lot (especially the main page).
No, I shouldn't get the credit for the main page at all; I didn't touch it. There was an active editor almost two years ago by the name of User:Tauleonui who had knowledge of Hawaiian and contributed several articles, and he was the one that completely wrote it. However, he mysteriously left the project in August '06. If only he could have stayed longer...
How can we expand the Hawaiian Wikipedia? How will those like me who can't speak Hawaiian contribute to the Hawaiian Wikipedia more effectively?
We need template designers for the article templates (it seems that copy-pasting from here doesn't work, and I'm not knowledgeable in wiki markup besides the basics) and, as you suggested, a new design for the Main Page. And, of course, it would help if we had Hawaiian speakers who are computer savvy and have fun helping to write an encyclopedia. It's hard to contribute unless you fit as one of these two people.
How can we recruit more members for the Hawaiian Wikipedia?
If you're interested in helping out, you can contact me here or there and I'll try to guide you as best as possible. Another way to get more members is recruitment. If you know any Hawaiian speakers, please ask them to stop by on the Hawaiian Wikipedia. If you need more info, you are more than free to ask!
