Easy question. Who is missing? Hashim Amla, Michael Bevan,Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Michael Hussey,Jonathan Trott --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 09:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ryan Ten Doeschate would be the answer but really you should wait for the earlier one to be answered before posting the question. Sumant81 (talk) 12:24, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Which batting legend was dismissed by a future England selector but continued the following morning on 111 (as part of a record breaking innings) despite the dismissal not being overturned? KingStrato (talk) 22:04, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hint 1: Over 4 consecutive days - He scored 111 one day without being dismissed the next day was washed out. He scored 5 runs the third day, was out but his team won. Then on the following day he resumed on 111 and scored considerably more. This last day was such an event that I skipped out of school early to go to the ground to watch. KingStrato (talk) 20:27, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hint 2: The innings concerned was the ultimate innings and the first triple hundred at Edgbaston. KingStrato (talk) 20:07, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, Brian Lara? Ovshake (talk) 04:33, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - but do you know why? (Really it should be yours anyway because I didn't ask why but I wrote the hints without referring back to the question and they kinda gave it away). KingStrato (talk) 07:15, 16 December 2011 (UTC) No. Why? Was there a match on the rest day? Ovshake (talk) 09:22, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1994/ENG_LOCAL/CC/R06/WARWICKS_DURHAM_CC_02-06JUN1994_STATS.html gives the basics. See also http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1994/ENG_LOCAL/SUNLG/R05/WARWICKS_DURHAM_SUNLG_05JUN1994.html for the bit in-between,
Was it common to hold the sunday league matches in the middle of a county championship match or was this a one-off case? Sumant81 (talk) 07:13, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
More common than not, indeed in some cases you'd get a v b in the CC, and then b v c and d v a in the Sunday league as well

What had only two batsmen achieved till September 2011, but has subsequently been achieved by four more - Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder? Ovshake (talk) 17:22, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does this have anything to do with the fact that they are all left handers?

The missing cricketer in this list is (in no particular order) W. G. Grace,Plum Warner,Jack Hobbs,___________ Sumant81 (talk) 05:39, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Wisden? They have all been nominated Wisden Cricketer of the Year "alone" in 1896 (Grace), 1913 (Wisden), 1921 (Warner) & 1926 (Hobbs). OrangeKnight (talk) 00:31, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct ,Wisden it is, the list represents the only sole winners of the "Wisden Cricketer Of The Year." Sumant81 (talk) 06:45, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Q1385

edit

I'll jump in with a "fun" one. This will take a little detective work. Here's a quote from Wisden: "X and Y both played sound cricket but following lunch on the third day when the score stood at 185 for four wickets, there was no prolonged stand." X and Y are a well-known pairing, though not usually seen together in a cricketing sense; this is an international cricket match, but not a Test or an ODI. Please identify the venue of the match. Johnlp (talk) 09:55, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS The word "detective" might provide a clue. Johnlp (talk) 23:01, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Shacklock and William Mycroft? Ovshake (talk) 03:55, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So the venue shall be Lord's, June 1885, when the two had bowled in tandem? Ovshake (talk) 03:56, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, not this one. Some years later. Johnlp (talk) 09:30, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But the pair is the same? Ovshake (talk) 17:52, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're in the right direction, but not these two. Johnlp (talk) 20:24, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does this involve Mordecai Sherwin? Ovshake (talk) 07:05, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No. You're being too clever. Go for the detective pairing you're thinking of, then find a match where they played together and did better than their colleagues. Johnlp (talk) 10:06, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So you mean Shacklock and Mycroft in some other match? Ovshake (talk) 07:15, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not Shacklock and Mycroft at all. But in that their names suggested X's name and X's brother... Johnlp (talk) 09:49, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You mean, another detective and his brother inspired by cricketers? Ovshake (talk) 12:32, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, you're trying to make this more complex than it is. Who is the famous detective and his sidekick who are X and Y? Then find an international match (not Test or ODI) in which players named X and Y appeared and did well alongside each other. That's all. You've got very sidetracked into the origins of names when that's not where the answer lies. Johnlp (talk) 13:04, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So we need to find a match with Holmes and Watson.

Yup. Johnlp (talk) 13:38, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Was this the USA v Canada in 1868 or thereabouts? 207.218.21.5 (talk) 13:43, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, almost 60 years later. Johnlp (talk) 19:31, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was X Percy Holmes? Moondyne (talk) 03:55, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was Y Willie Watson? Ovshake (talk) 05:41, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Moondyne has the right Holmes; but it's not Willie Watson. Johnlp (talk) 09:17, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Holmes only played 3 test in 1928, all against South Africa, have to find in those? --Extra 999 (Contact me) 13:00, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, as indicated, this is neither a Test match nor an ODI (of any form). But it is an "international" match in which cricketers from one country were playing a side from another country (in that second country). Johnlp (talk) 13:11, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was Y Frank Watson (cricketer)? Moondyne (talk) 13:31, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Complete stab in the dark, Kingston in this match. Moondyne (talk) 13:38, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Right tour, wrong match. Johnlp (talk) 13:42, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Port of Spain? Moondyne (talk) 13:53, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No. You're circling around this and you'll get there soon, I'm sure. ;-) Johnlp (talk) 13:58, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It has to be Georgetown. Moondyne (talk) 14:00, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Well done. I just came across the sentence starting "Holmes and Watson both played sound cricket..." in the 1927 Wisden when looking up material for George Francis (cricketer), which I'm expanding, and thought it was too good not to share. Johnlp (talk) 14:06, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Should be easy. What rather bizarre group do Tip Foster and Faoud Bacchus belong to? Ovshake (talk) 05:11, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mabye, the only players who have scored only a single century, but made 250 or more. First I thought that both are having the average below 50 after scoring 250, but soon dismissed. --Extra 999 (Contact me) 09:37, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure now, the only players who have scored only a single century, but made 200 or above, excluding those two are: Denis Atkinson; Martin Donnelly; David Lloyd; Taslim Arif; Brendon Kuruppu; and Jason Gillespie. --Extra 999 (Contact me) 09:43, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who is surely the only person to have turned down the opportunity to play a Test match in order to attend the Warrnambool Fair? --Roisterer (talk) 02:51, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wild guess: Spofforth? Moondyne (talk) 14:44, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it Frank Allan? Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 19:43, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was indeed "Bowler of the Century" Frank Allan. His article mentions that he turned down the opportunity to play in the first ever Test match but doesn't add that it was because he preferred to spend the day with friends at the Warrnambool Agricultural Fair. I found this on googlebooks which makes reference to it. --Roisterer (talk) 23:44, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It must be said that Frank Allen would have had no idea of the significance of the match. To him, it would only have been the first 11 a side match between any English Tourists and any Australian team, and if it didn't pay enough, would not have been worth missing the fair for. This group is made of cricketers holding connected test records. There are 7 (or arguably 9) who hold a joint record, but the only outright members are Hutton, Compton, Border, Tendulkar (twice), Dravid and Ponting. What's the connection? Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 15:23, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The 6 listed all hold different - but connected - records outright. The most recent member of the 7 tied for one of the other connected records is Michael Vaughan. Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 18:44, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Out most times in a certain way? Hutton holds the record for obstructing the field and Compton hit wicket, so maybe... Ovshake (talk) 13:47, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's exactly right; the batsmen to have been dismissed most times in each of the various ways. Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 20:29, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As well as the two you say, its Tendulkar (caught & lbw), Dravid (bowled), Ponting (run out) and Border (Stumped). 7 batsmen have been out handled the ball once, and 2 have been retired out (not sure if that counts). No one (yet) been timed out or hit the ball twice in tests. Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 20:35, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who in a Lord's Test match allegedly hit a farmer for six on to the head of a lieutenant-general who was sitting in the stand? Johnlp (talk) 18:25, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hint Please. Does he still play cricket? Does he play for England? How many runs did he score that match? Please hint something along those lines.
Let's leave it a bit longer before hints. Lord's Test... farmer... a hit for six. (The fact that a six was hit by this player in this particular match is recorded in CricketArchive, so I'm inclined to believe it is a true incident, though I only have newspaper reports to confirm it.) 6 or more wickets in an innings with zero maidens is my guess but when I check out the list for the same, there are more people that should have been in the list.So I am probably missing out on something Sumant81 (talk) 14:29, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sumant has it - the search I did on statsguru came up with the above. Who's missing? Perhaps I filtered incorrectly? (Never did a statsguru based quetion before.)This question was prompted by bumping into an old players friend who took 9-69 with no maidens. He got mullered every two or three overs, then hit back with quick wickets. Over to you, Mr 81. WillE (talk) 15:23, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Only 10 players have have achieved this in Test cricket. The first 9 are Monty Noble, Trevor Bailey, Frank Worrell, Sunil Gavaskar, Carl Hooper, VVS Laxman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sachin Tendulkar and Mike Hussey. What is it and who is the 10th player? --Roberry (talk) 16:42, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hint - it is regarding partnerships.--Roberry (talk) 16:28, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hint2 - Jack Barrett and Bernard Tancred are the only players to achieve the 'counter-feat' --Roberry (talk) 17:16, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The why part is probably having had all partnerships from 1 to 10 each of which have been worth 50 or more ,the counter feat therefore being having partnerships 1 to 10 none greater than 50 ,am still looking for the 10th based on this guess Sumant81 (talk) 18:01, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like AB De Villiers Sumant81 (talk) 18:49, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was hoping someone might have had century partnerships for every wicket, but it hasn't happened (yet). So you are correct - the 9 plus de Villiers have had 50 partnerships for every wicket. And the 2 others had partnerships for all wickets, but are the only ones without any 50 partnerships. Roberry (talk) 19:27, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A slightly long question but read on.
Chris Gayle has represented 11 teams in t20s,the most by any player on par with Dirk Nannes .He might break the record tomorrow if he debuts for Dolphins in the South African t20 Dirk Nannes holds the record now after representing the lions in the South African t20s.
On the other hand 3 cricketers have represented 7 teams in t20s ,The most for any cricketer without ever having played an international t20 . Out of these 3

  • One of the three has played both Test and ODI
  • One of the three has played a single Test
  • One of the three has played neither a test nor an ODI but has recently been in the news with respect to coaching
