Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Modern history
- The following discussion is an archived proposal of the WikiProject below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the project's talk page (if created) or the WikiProject Council). No further edits should be made to this page.
The proposed WikiProject was not created. Insufficient editor interest to support a WikiProject Modern History at this time. Joining WP:WikiProject History was suggested as an alternative for now. Ajpolino (talk) 14:31, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Description
editThis WP would encompass everything related to history that occurred between the start of the 16th century and the present day. Small conflicts, great wars, past monarchies... etc. Thousands of articles would benefit from a WP like this one. If you were to take a look at the modern history category, you'd find 24 pages and 30 subcategories, each subcategory containing many more articles and many more subcategories.
The scope of this WP would be huge, which is why I believe it should have many task forces specializing in smaller projects. Maybe a task force would specialize in wars, maybe another two for past and current monarchies, maybe another for historical figures. The list goes on and on.
A WP like this one would need a lot more than 6 to 12 wikipideans, but due to the scope of the subject, I believe that more than enough people will join. Ammar M. Elbehery (talk) 22:55, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

- Wikipedia:WikiProject History (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Wikipedia:WikiProject European history (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Military History (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- 1. WikiProject History is currently semi-inactive, plus I believe different periods of history differ massively. For example, a WP about ancient civilizations (WP:AC) would have task forces about culture and writing systems. But, in a WP about the middle ages or modern history (WP:MA; WP:MH), these topics would be a lot less relevant than in WP:AC. Another example is technology and current events, topics which would be very very important in WP:MH, but would never be mentioned in WP:AC or WP:MA. Also, I believe this topic is way too big to be a task force in WikiProject History.
- 2. WikiProject European history is only focused on European history (I know, I'm a genius), and while this WP would be somewhat Eurocentric (since Europe was the dominant continent for most of modern history), other areas of the world will definitely be recognized.
- 3. WikiProject Military History is only focused on wars and guns, this WP would focus on all aspects of history.

Discussion
editIf you wish, you can build your effort as a new Task Force at Wikipedia:WikiProject History. I would suggest that you please go to the section below, and start your efforts there. I hope that's helpful. thanks!!
thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 05:38, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- @Sm8900: I see that you are a member there. I also see that "early modern history" and "late modern history" task forces are already set up without any members, which is odd in my opinion. This also kinda causes a problem since it seems as though you guys have a system in place. Also, a new task force will gain substantially less traction than a new WP. Plus the fact that the WP is semi-inactive makes me doubt the effectiveness of a new TF.
- I think I'll wait for now. If this proposal doesn't attract many people, then I'll definitely join a task force. Thanks for the advice. Ammar M. Elbehery (talk) 19:46, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment. Ammar, I see your dilemma: which way (New WP, old WP, sub-project, task-force, other) is the best way to attract the most editors? I would conduct several opinion polls and RfCs across all the major history-related corners of Wikipedia to find out if a new WP about Modern History is doable and recruits a minimum of editors.
