Focus on...

JESUS
CHRIST

"Let them prefer nothing to the love of Christ" wrote St. Benedict in the 6th century. The article Love of Christ discusses how as a central element of Christian belief, this term can refer both to the love of Jesus Christ for humanity, and to the love of Christians for Christ.

The theme of love is the key element of Johannine writings and a motif in the letters of Paul. Ephesians 3:17-19 relates the love of Christ to the knowledge of Christ, and considers the love of Christ as a necessity for knowing him. At the end of the Last Supper, just before the Farewell Discourse, Jesus gives a New Commandment to his eleven remaining disciples: "Love one another, as I have loved you."

Given that Christmas will be here soon, it may be apt to mention that the Nativity of Jesus article discusses how as of the 13th century the love for the Child Jesus based on Christmas celebrations transformed his image among Christians and emphasized a more nurturing aspect.

From the bookshelf

Jesus and His Own: A Commentary on John 13-17 by Daniel Stevick 2011 ISBN 0802848656

In this book Stevick just deals with five chapters of the Gospel of John, and as a result of that focus can present a more detailed (yet refreshingly readable and insightful) overview of the key elements of the Farewell Discourse and the petitions presented to the Father based on Jesus' love for "His own".
