1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I set it up, and so I was the creator of it, though most of the other editors have dwarved this initial work now. I set it up after calling for supporters to the idea. My reasons for so doing included (i) an opinion that articles about or connected with Cheshire could do with a centralised resource-pool or series of pages on wikipedia on which interested people could share ideas and develop strategies for writing articles, ask for information and help, and generally move towards Cheshire getting a good presence on wikipedia; and (ii) that a project was the best way to organise us all towards that end.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: Apart from the initial setting up, I also initially wrote the portal. I'm very happy that others have joined in so much that I cannot claim any of the credit for it now: that is the sign of a good project, in my opinion. I patrol articles, write new articles for civil parishes and suchlike. I have, by default, become interested in the administrative history of Cheshire, though a number of areas also have my interest (forests, gardens, and parks in Cheshire, footpaths, history of roads and transport, etc) I'm not active on biographical subjects regarding Cheshire. I edit Cheshire-related articles many times almost every day. I would say my involvement is great, though sometimes my administrator's duties have, very regrettably, kept me away.
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: Every editor has a life outside wikipedia, and I am no exception. Sometimes it has felt that there are only a few editors around to help keep things ticking over: by this, I mean deal adequately with vandalism and other disruption, and, because of this and the sometimes high levels of this, there is little time one can devote to writing new material or building upon already written material. It can feel a bit like an uphill struggle at times. I imagine that others also have calls upon their time so that it may appear that one is being left alone when others have other matters to attend to, but the key thing is to realise that, if put in their shoes, the other editors are probably feeling the same. Perhaps there is room for more activities like team-building (without the trendy hogwash that is often imposed by firms wanting to do this), so that we form a more cohesive group - I hesitate to call it a "community" as that may not not be easy in an online enterprise like this, unless we decide to know more about each other as individuals, and I'm not sure everyone would want this, or whether it would be acceptable.
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: Every day. I used to try to get others involved, but sometimes got little response, and so I reduced the frequency of posting to it.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: Of course.
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: All of the ones mentioned. To them, I could add problems dealing with "Notable Residents" sections when, even after beimng asked to supply evidence for names being added, one just gets ignored and the usual entries get continually added with little or no verification. The issue of whether we should add some current pop star who once spent a few months in a town, or some football player, or a Big Brother or other game-show contestant really needs attention. We need to get a project-wide agreement on how to handle deficient Notable Residents sections, where the notability of a person is often neglected, but more neglected is the question of whether a notable person's connectuon with a place is itself notable and worthy of inclusion (i.e., its a two-stage kind of notability that seems to me to be required here.)
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer: Yes.
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer: Yes.
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: I think we are now in the situation where we need to develop a strategy plan for upgrading key articles. We can use and/or modify the assessment and importance classifications as guides. However, I think we should try to have a much more concerted effort to discuss and upgrade key articles. Amongst these, I would say that Cheshire is top priority, perhaps equal with Chester. We could then work our way down the chief towns of Cheshire. This may be a big job, and I've only mentioned local government and settlement articles, and there are other areas that are arguably at least as important as these. So, there is an enormous amount of work to do, because once we have attended to articles and got them to GA or FA status, we need almost a roster of people who are prepared to deal with vandalism of them and take the necessary action to repair any impairment of the articles. The scale of the work involved shows me that we need to draw up careful plans to do this, on the principle that "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." The project would be the central place where such strategies and priorities might be developed, and we need to do it, even though it may temporarily take us away from writing content until we have got a basic plan in place. Once the plan is in place, we need to make sure we have people who are implementing the plan. Now, I know some people will be put off with this, perhaps thinking that they are doing this for fun in their spare time. All I would say is that we are all in that situation, and that planning ahead and working out a strategy to do things often lies at the heart of many "hobbies" or "pastimes" (try doing rock-climbing, travelling the world, car racing, even stamp collecting without developing plans and strategies, and you may find things get too difficult or dangerous, and demoralisation can begin.)

Ok, I've said far too much already.  DDStretch  (talk) 17:40, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I think I just stumbled across the project by looking on article talk pages and decided to join. In the case of other project's I've joined, it's been because I've seen the project at work and have wanted to help make it successful. I think one of the best ways to attract more members would be by improving Cheshire-related articles as much as possible, probably the high profile ones. We can also talk to people we see editing Cheshire subjects.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: Because I'm not actually based in Cheshire, I'm not as familiar as other people are with the county, which means I'm more circumspect when contributing, preferring to stick to what I'm familiar with. I'd like to do more work improving articles, adding references and so on, but mostly it's been reverting vandalising and occasionally tidying some articles I've come across. I am mainly interested in the history of the county, as demonstrated by my edits to Lindow Man and (more importantly in my opinion) Deva Victrix (Roman Chester). Cheshire has an interesting Roman heritage, and only Chester receives any real coverage at the moment.
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: Because of the inactivity on the project talk page, if I have looked for help, I have often left messages on the talk pages of users I know will be active. This probably slightly limits the chances of other people dropping by and helping, and may alienate others, but previously when I had left messages on the project talk page no one seemed to take any notice. No one has to be an expert to contribute to an article.
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: It's on my watchlist, and whenever someone posts I ask myself if I can help. I periodically drop by to see if there's anything I've missed.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: Yes. And now that things are picking up (a state of affairs that will hopefully be sustained) I'll probably be leaving messages on there, flagging up issues I come across that probably need the attention of other project members. Using an article's talk page is of course important for the article's development, but often it may go unnoticed because no one's watching, so doubling up by leaving a note on WT:CHES makes sense, at least to me.
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: The problems facing Cheshire articles are pretty much the same as those facing other UK wikiprojects, but one thing that (as far as I know) I exclusive to Cheshire is some Anglo-Welsh "tension", for want of a better word. Recently, on the Deva Stadium article, I encountered a statement that Chester is in Wales! As it was unreferenced, I removed it, but it indicates to me that this probably occurs elsewhere and is something we should be wary of. The best policy is to stick to the verifiable facts and treat it as if it's traditional counties vandalism.
Adendum: On inspecting an OS map, it appears that the stadium is in Wales, but it was poorly handled in the article and the way it was mentioned was highly POV.
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer: Yes, and as Espresso Addict has stated that he'd like to have the portal promoted to featured status, I've made an effort to get involved.
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer: Absolutely, I try to keep an eye on events related to the above three projects, but things will always slip through the net. Moreover, it would be a good way of encouraging communication between projects.
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: Article wise, some of the project's most important articles are not of a high enough standard, and by say the end of the year I'd like at least one of Cheshire or Chester to be close to becoming a Good Article. But these things don't happen over night, and I feel it's important that editors gain experience with what is expected by trying to take some of their articles through GAC. Members should also draw on each other's experience and areas of interest.
For the project, I'd like to see some achievable project aims, something that can be done in the short-term to encourage people and show them how it's done. At the moment, I look at the project's goals and they seem to vague and unachievable. Maybe revamp the main project page to interest people as it looks a little bland IMO.
Vandalism is always a problem on wikipedia, and I'd like to see a watchlist established where recent changes could be monitored. This would not only help us identify vandalism, but find new editors with an interest in Cheshire. I recently established one for Greater Manchester (based on one for WP:YORKS), however it's maintained by hand and if there's interest in getting it done, it would probably be worth looking into whether a bot could maintain a similar watchlist for WP:CHES.

In an effort to assess the progress of Wikiproject Cheshire, it has been decided to send a questionnaire to members. To answer, please copy this questionnaire and paste your answers on the answer page. While participation is, of course, not compulsory, thoughtful answers will help the project to develop and improve. Thank you.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I did some small edits on Sandbach and Sandbach school and received help from Ddstretch and saw their was a WP Cheshire and thought I could help and since the I've written two start class article and helped get Sandbach to C class
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: I look mainly at Congleton borough articles. I also am involved with Local politics being and so try to keep things up to date
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: Yes thanks go to Ddstretch and Peter Vardy
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: well its on my watchlist, but I'll admit it gets a little confusing especially when abbreviations litter it.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer:I would try to but sometimes feel that I don't know enough policy but I do hear the Ignore all rules often enough
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: not really, certainly some of the High schools still do not have articles , such as Congleton High. Also religion in Cheshire I've tried and failed to add information to it.
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer: No
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer:Yes
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: Maybe an article of the week or Fortnight to encourage work on it. Some editors might need to be a little less harsh when C/e as some could be upset by comments such as I wish there was a charge of 1p for every capital letter in this article , which was little disheartening as I had put a lot of effort into it.安東尼 TALK 圣诞快乐 21:55, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Responses from Espresso Addict edit

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I first noticed the project when members attached banners, templates and infoboxes to some of the articles I'd created. I was initially rather put off, as I perceived the project as overly bureaucratic and focused on adding things like infoboxes and templates, rather than creating content. I think it was Peter I. Vardy who persuaded me that the two were not necessarily contradictory, so I joined the project rather later than most long-term contributors. Ways of drawing in new participants might include getting the portal to featured status & continuing to contribute new Cheshire articles to DYK. I think we need to be careful not to put potentially valuable contributors off the project, for example, by reverting their good-faith changes rather than engaging in dialogue as to why their edits aren't appropriate, or by assessing the fruits of their hard work as "stub/low priority" without attempting to assist.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: I'm interested in a wide range of areas across the encyclopedia and my participation tends to cycle from area to area, so it's difficult to estimate an average. I filled in the remaining CPs in the Crewe & Nantwich borough, and have since been working intermittently on expanding all the C&N stubs to a decent start class. I'm interested in secular listed buildings, black-and-white architecture, hills, nature reserves/SSSIs & walks, and have created or edited many articles on these topics. I believe it's more valuable to create useful, accurate, referenced & illustrated articles in the decent start to B-class range than to labour to get a tiny fraction of articles to GA or FA. I'm also active at Geograph, and have a huge stock of local photos taken for that project, which I have been adding to illustrate Cheshire geography and architecture. I also copy edit and add references to articles. Additionally, I've done much of the maintenance work on the portal since August 2007.
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: I feel project members could do more to support one another in editing, peer reviewing, assisting with research and the like. Discussion on how we should best implement the UK settlements guide for CPs with low population would be helpful. I'd like more input from project members on the portal – too often I feel like I'm operating in a vacuum there.
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: It's watchlisted, but I don't participate all that often.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: Perhaps. It would depend on whether the discussions were of interest to me. I feel participation in project talk space can come at the expense of the real business of content generation.
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: The vast majority of the articles, where present, are in need of a great deal of expansion, illustration and improved referencing. It's frustrating that some of the top-level summaries are either absent (eg Hills of Cheshire, Roads of Cheshire) or not very useful (eg History of Cheshire).
As the current maintainer, I'm interested in finding out whether people would prefer to discuss portal issues on the portal talk pages or on the project ones.
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer: Not really. I'm more interested in the more rural areas – Derbyshire, Shropshire, Wales, Lakes &c. Interproject discussion on rural CPs, nature reserves/national parks/SSSIs, listed buildings and the like would be of interest, not necessarily limited to the UK.
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: As I've mentioned elsewhere, I consider a priority for 2009 should be getting the portal to featured status. I'd like to facilitate cooperation between article writers in terms of research, review, copy editing, photography &c, in the context of all levels of articles, not just those that are candidates for GA/FA. I think we should do more to develop the online resources subpage, so that we don't all have to reinvent the wheel continually. A project watchlist for all project-tagged articles would be useful.

Responses of Peter I. Vardy edit

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I joined when it was set up by Ddstretch and it seemed an attractive idea - to improve articles concentrating on Cheshire-related topics and to widen the coverage of such articles.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: My activities are virtually confined to writing new articles and trying to improve what is already there. I do this any time I am free from other pressures and duties - most days when I am at home. I do not feel I have enough in the way of computer skills, or sufficient interest (or time) to do a lot on projects, newsletters, etc (and I admire those who do).
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: Yes. If you ask someone for help or advice, it's usually given wisely and promptly. This has been one of my inspirations for getting more involved. And if I am in trouble (threatened, abused etc.) I have received valuable support; without such support members could easily become disillusioned and leave the whole project (ie Wikipedia).
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: Yes
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: Yes, if they concern matters in which I am interested; and if I have time (they can be very time consuming).
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: People who write or edit articles without references, especially no inline citations; or who add bits of new content in the middle of an already referenced section, which messes up the whole referencing. Although I do accept it's difficult for new editors to understand the importance of it, and to learn the techniques to do it properly. I remember my early days of wallowing on help pages, etc. I think we sometimes forget how daunting it can be for a new editor and we should be there to support any new editor who is trying his/her best.
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer: Yes
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer: Yes. I am a member of the Merseyside project and feel guilty about the small amount of work I do for it. (That's the problem caused by the Cheshire project being so seducing!) And I'm very jealous of the energy in the Greater Manchester project.
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: That's mainly covered above. Supporting and encouraging each each other and, particularly, helping new editors who are writing Cheshire-related material.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I think I had been editing Wirral articles and noticed the project banner added to the talk pages of the articles.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: Edit fairly regularly. Anything from providing wikilinks, fixing typos, reverting vandalism, rewriting copyvios and adding references to existing material, to more substantive content in Cheshire places (usually those soon to be covered by the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority). Have added infoboxes, population stats, assessed articles (perhaps not accurately!) and tried to conform each article to the guidelines of WP:UKTOWNS (particularly with smaller settlements that are often overlooked).
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: I appreciate the useful advice and assistance from the more experienced editors within the project, particularly Ddstretch and Peter I. Vardy. I'm open to any guidance or constructive criticism, as there appear to be many guidelines, resolutions or points of consensus somehow passing me by. Most editors have responded to any questions/comments I've had, so I feel that I'm part of a team, which is reassuring.
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: Sometimes, but usually I leave a message on the relevant article talk page or directly with those editors who have been involved with those articles or have helped me in the past.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: For larger issues affecting the whole project, perhaps. However, I usually don't feel I have much to contribute that probably hasn't been said better by someone else.
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer:Vandalism (usually from anon IPs) is unfortunate, but one of those things I suppose we're stuck with, with Wikipedia editing policy being what it is... Notable Residents sections of UK places attract vandalism, unverified content and/or non-notable entries to such an extent that I sometimes wish these sections didn't exist at all. However, remembering my own early editing experiences, there are also those good-intentioned newbies/casual editors that might need some help and might be a bit overwhelmed by it all.
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer: Yes, but don't always view it as I've been more concerned with Stubs & Start Class articles.
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer: Yes. It could be helpful in providing co-ordination, continuity and cross-referencing between these three sister projects, especially when there's an overlap of interest.
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer: Just to say that I'm glad there are some pro-active members working so hard to improve the project and help make Cheshire articles that much better. My time editing here (as with most of us) is usually limited as real life is busy enough. I'm always keen to help out where I can, but am careful from past experience not to 'bite off more than I can chew'. Thanks for asking for my views.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer: I can't remember now, I think I may have become aware of the project during a GA review of Churche's Mansion. In general though I think the most effective way to encourage new members is to post an invitation banner on the talk page of any editor making good edits to Cheshire related articles.
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer: Spasmodic. I try to help where and when I can, particularly when articles are going forwards to GAN, but I've tended to focus on those few areas that have childhood memories for me, such as Beeston Castle.
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer: Yes. I feel the same sense of camaraderie and all striving for the common goal here as I do in the GM project.
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer: I do, it's on my watchlist.
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer: Yes, I would.
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer: The thing that frustrates me most is the poor quality of so many of the settlement articles, which are too often defended by editors who think a long list of minor footballers constitutes a good Notable persons list. That's by no means limited to this project though. Having said that, with the exception of Crewe, I don't feel any great urge to work on those articles myself, preferring instead to explore some of the less well tramped byways like Witchcraft in Cheshire.
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. Answer: I didn't, but I do now.
Answer: I think success breeds success, so as the level of activity in the project increases I think that'll naturally encourage further activity and so on. So I'd like to see us get a few significant quick wins from a well chosen set of short to medium project priorities.
