California State Route 111 Business (Palm Springs)

edit

Is California State Route 111 Business (Palm Springs) an north-south or east-west route? (I need for article I am going to create.) Thanks! -322UbnBr2 (Talk | Contributions | Actions) 02:03, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Before the bypass avoiding downtown Palm Springs was opened in 1993, the stretch that now is SR 111 Business was simply part of the north-south SR 111. See the maps here. Since SR 111 Business is not obviously predominantly aligned east-west, it is unlikely that anyone should have wanted to reassign the original orientation. This is consistent with the designations "California 111 Business north" and "California 111 Business south" used here by AARoads.  --Lambiam 03:35, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The business route is almost entirely unsigned in the field. I just drove the whole thing on Google Street View, and the ONLY sign is at the southeastern junction between CA-111 and CA-111 Business where it doesn't have a directional banner. The other junction, at the northwest corner of Palm Springs, has no sign, and there are, as far as I can tell, no reassurance markers along the route nor do any cross streets along the way indicate it. The route itself is L-shaped and the two legs are basically the same length. I think Lambiam's conclusion that it maintains the same nominal directionality as its parent route is reasonable given the lack of evidence otherwise. --Jayron32 13:35, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I visit Palm Springs at least twice a year and I never heard of "111 Business." I looked it up on a map and found it is Palm Canyon Drive. That can get confusing because it has three stretches. There is North Palm Canyon Drive in the main tourist part. South Palm Canyon Drive is just south of that. East Palm Canyon Drive goes between the end of South Palm Canyon Drive and Route 111. Because that one road has North, South, and East designations, one could easily wonder what the designation of 111B might be. Maybe it is time to visit my daughter again and see if I can find any sort of signage. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 14:02, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
According to Google Street View, the only sign I found was approaching Palm Springs along East Palm Canyon Drive/CA 111 from the southeast from the Cathedral City/Suntown area. Following CA-111, where CA-111 turns off East Palm Canyon Drive onto South Gene Autry Trail, at that intersection, there is a sign directing North CA-111 traffic to turn right, and CA-111 Business is signed (with no directional banner) as continuing straight ahead on Palm Canyon Drive. See Here on the right.--Jayron32 14:22, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
