  1. HarishPillay I can't attend meetings on Tuesday nights.
  2. Bonkers The Clown (talk) 07:08, 30 August 2012 (UTC) (Personal restrictions, though not because I'm a loner that sits in my mom's basement all day with my bum stuck to the chair. But I do appreciate your invitation. Side note: Trust me, you would never believe that I am Bonkers The Clown if you saw me in real life. And I would feel intimidated. Hmm. Maybe a few years later?)[reply]
  3. Sorry, got other prior commitments, so maybe next time. Good luck for the chapter discussion! Feel that Singapore really needs one.--Lionratz (talk) 08:00, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Good call, but i will be involved in the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix in Singapore, so doubt will be able to join you guys, despite my area of involvement is near to the said location. Comments edit

  • Hi, I'm based in Hong Kong, and the coordinator in Chief for the Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong, which will be in August next year. So I just wanna notify you about the conference, and wonder if you would talk about going to the conference and getting better organized, do tell me anything you need help in both, we have some contacts may be helpful in SG. and I think John can answer most of your question about the conference. More info on Wikimania official Page --JéRRy.雨雨.talk.hk 02:18, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
G'day. I will ensure we talk about Wikimania. And I'd also like to talk about starting a meta:Wikimedia chapter, and/or meta:FDC and meta:GAC processes, so the Singapore community can start to manage their own funding needs for the community, including scholarships for Wikimania. If you know anyone in SG that haven't been spammed already (see their en.WP talk page), please invite them to the meetup. I'll be in Singapore Mon-Fri, so I can also catch up with them another day if Tuesday evening is unsuitable. John Vandenberg (chat) 08:25, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Plan edit

Suggestions on where to meet..? Should we follow the plan used for Wikipedia:Meetup/Singapore 4? John Vandenberg (chat) 01:15, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

4th Sept is a weekday, so we will have to meet after 6pm. Somewhere next to an MRT station, so that people can get here fast? Internet access is not an issue, I have a wifi hotspot. -- Sanjeev "ghane" Gupta 03:22, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

How is 7:30 pm for everyone? What about somewhere in Raffles City Shopping Centre or along Seah Street or Purvis Street, which is near City Hall MRT Station? — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:07, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That time suits me. John Vandenberg (chat) 07:38, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Can I suggest that we meet in front of Starbucks in Raffles City Shopping Centre (which is closed for renovations, by the way), and then make our way to Chin Chin Eating House at 19 Purvis Street? The Chinese food there is quite good. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:40, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken the liberty of including the meeting place and time in the meet-up box. Let me know if you wish to propose something else. — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:26, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Minutes edit

Attendees.

A brief note of what was discussed (mainly by Francis Bond (talk) 03:10, 24 September 2012 (UTC)).[reply]

  • John discussed some of the pros and cons of forming a local chapter
    • con: you have to structure carefully so as not to be sue-able
    • con: there is work involved, you need at least 6 keen people
    • pro: can get funding from wikimedia foundation
      • can sponsor people to go to e.g., Wikimania
      • can have wiki editing training events
    • pro: chapter members are supportive of projects (like academic or local events)
    • pro: easier to cooperate with other institutions (working well with libraries in Australia)
  • the general feeling was that there wasn't a great need for a chapter in Singapore, but that it would be good to build more of a community
    • suggested having semi-regular meet-ups (0.5-1/month)
    • Francis offered to host at the Hackerspace
    • next meeting sometime in early October (date to be decided)
    • John suggested everyone join and use the Singapore mailing list
  • Jack said he had a back log of student written pages he needed to clean up
    • John suggested asking for help on the Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board
    • Jack said that this page wasn't very active
    • Francis suggested maybe going through some of the topics listed there at the next meeting
  • Francis raised the issue of new editors getting bitten (experienced a lot in his class project)
    • if there was more of a community who could watch new pages in projects like this, it would be helpful
