Event details
editAngel City FC and the Los Angeles Public Library are co-hosting this Wikipedia edit-a-thon, focusing on athletes, teams, clubs, and other topics within women's soccer. Our goal is to help close the information gap between men's and women's sports. Fans of all skill and experience levels with Wikipedia are encouraged to join! We will introduce you to the basics of editing Wikipedia before moving to an open editing session. We have identified suggested articles to edit, as well as suggested sources, but we encourage you to edit pages that interest you!
About us
editAngel City FC is LA's professional women's soccer club. Founded in 2020, the team began play in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in 2022.
The last ten years have seen a rapid grown in interest and investment in women's soccer, both in the US and around the world, but our game still lags behind that of our male counterparts in many respects. One of those is the information gap between men's and women's soccer; look at the roster section of any top-flight women's club's Wikipedia page and you'll find players who don't have pages on the site. Pages for all but the best-known and most-successful players and clubs tend to be shorter and less well-cited than their male counterparts, and are sometimes years out of date. With better media coverage and bigger investments in things like data collection in recent years, reliable information on the women's game is becoming more and more available—it just needs to be collected and added to the world's biggest reference work.
The goals of this event are as follows:
- Improve the breadth and depth of women's soccer-related pages on Wikipedia.
- Train interested soccer fans on how to improve and update these pages.
- Bring Angel City fans and the broader soccer community in LA together.
