The fourth annual Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon: Documenting Kansas City's African American Artists is Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the Rockhill Room of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This is a meetup under the Kansas City Meetup project, which lists all Wikipedia meetups in the Kansas City metro.

    • 11am–12pm: Slideshow presentation introducing Wikipedia and how to begin editing
    • 12pm–4pm: This is time for you to edit, with helpers to answer your research and Wikipedia questions
    • If you can't make the whole event, drop in for an hour or two and get started.

  • Cost: Free, reserve your free ticket today. The attached parking garage is free with a disability placard or $10 for other guests, and free parking is available nearby.
  • What to bring: Some laptops will be available but please bring a laptop and a power cord if you are able to. Create a free Wikipedia account beforehand if you can, because a limited number can be created at one time due to security, or we will assist you.
  • Participants: Join us as we celebrate Black History month by hosting a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon! In this interactive session you'll learn about Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, the anatomy of a Wikipedia article, and how to contribute to this free online encyclopedia. In this Wikipedia edit-a-thon we'll focus on documenting the rich artistic heritage of Kansas City's African American Artists by creating, editing, and improving Wikipedia articles on this topic. To participate in this session you don't need specialized knowledge of Kansas City's African American artists or of Wikipedia. Please create an account before the event if you're able.

Event description edit

With over 500 million visitors a month and over 18 billion pages of content Wikipedia is consistently one of the top ten websites on the Internet. It is the go-to source of information for many users wanting to learn about topics as diverse as black holes to the Sistine Chapel. In this Wikipedia edit-a-thon we'll focus on documenting the rich artistic heritage of Kansas City's African American Artists by creating, editing and improving Wikipedia articles on this topic. To participate in this session you don't need specialized knowledge of Kansas City's African American artists or of Wikipedia.

In this interactive session you'll learn about Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, the anatomy of a Wiki article and why it's so important to foster diversify in the editors who add and improve content in Wikipedia. In the second part of the session you'll create an account and be given step-by-step instructions on how to improve and create articles to Wikipedia.
