This editing workshop is a hands-on event in which participants can learn how to start editing Wikipedia with the help of trained and experienced Wikipedia editors. From setting up an account, to learning the anatomy of the good article, participants will be given the skills to add to and better understand one of the world's largest and most consulted online repositories of knowledge.

For those in the academic field or GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) sector, the facilitators can address any questions that participants may have about the place of Wikipedia with this area. The workshop will also explore possibilities for collaboration between Wikimedia and academic institutions both online and in the real world through initiatives such as the Wikipedian in residence.

The workshop will also touch on the use of Creative Commons licensing, and other Wikimedia Projects, such as Wikimedia Commons. The workshop will take the form of three sections: firstly an introduction to Wikipedia, followed by a hands-on workshop of the basics of Wikipedia editing, finishing up an exploration of other ways to contribute to Wikipedia and other projects.

Some of the pages that can be looked at will include those relating to the Library of Trinity College Dublin, UCD Library, Brutalism, architecture, pop art, and many others.

The venue will provide PCs, however if attendees have laptops that are set up to use the Eduroam service, they should be able to use Wi-Fi in the area.

How to Prepare edit

  1. Sign up for the event via Eventbrite
  2. CREATE A WIKIPEDIA ACCOUNT (if you don't already have one)

Please set up an account before the event if at all possible. Very few details are needed: a Username, password, and we recommend giving your email, if only to be reminded of your password when you forget it. The short Wikipedia:Tutorial/Registration explains why this is a good idea.

If you like, you can also learn a little about editing ahead of time here: w:en:Wikipedia:Tutorial, or see Getting started on Wikipedia for more information.
