Location edit

Preferably somewhere in the city.

  • Do we want to start with a meal or something and then move onto a discussion of various Wiki things? If so, I suggest either the Pancake Manor or the Brewhouse. Both are affordable, both will allow under-18s if its during the day on a Sunday, and both provide rather nice atmospheres.

As I said on the mailing list, I really think we should stay away from internet cafes and the like... if we're going to stare into computers for a few hours, we may as well all stay at home. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 10:09, 17 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Both places suit me - any other suggestions? I'm rather fond of Southbank, what do others say? Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 10:10, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheap! Cheap! Cheap! - How about Sushi Train (2 in center of City - the one in Eliz St - near the big Food Mall will tempura anything tempurable if you ask!) - before or after the Lunch Rush would be best - you only buy what plates you can afford! Allows U18s - not sure if open on a Sunday - Weekdays are usually ok with me  :-) FoolesTroupe (talk) 13:02, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the other one in the Myer Centre nearby will most likely be open on a Sunday - but I've never asked them for tempura!

FoolesTroupe (talk) 13:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, here's a poll below. Just sign for the places you could/would go to, for a start. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 07:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Votes edit

Must be open Sundays, must allow under 18s.

Any will be suitable - but I won't vote for 'all' - probably not considered 'nice'. :-) FoolesTroupe (talk) 14:43, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dates edit

After Australia Day, when people have gotten over the barbeques and fireworks? Suggest a date below. Sundays work best. We'll vote if a few different dates are suggested (disclaimer: voting is evil).

  • How does February 10 grab everyone? Gives us a month to procrastinate over everything. Lankiveil (talk) 13:47, 16 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
    • Fine with me :) — E talk 00:07, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • So we're talking about a daytime thing then? Feb-10 sounds ok to me. --Jquarry (talk) 05:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Feb 10 is fine, although Feb 17 suits me better. I have no objection to either though. Daytime is best. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 07:43, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Anytime - providing I have sufficient advance notice. Daytime means I most likely can avoid trying to park the car and can use public transport. FoolesTroupe (talk) 14:54, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • We might cover more ground if it's on February 24. That will be after the announcement of Wikimania 2009's host city, since Brisbane is still tentative. - Zero1328 Talk? 04:23, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That date is fine with me. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 04:28, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping that we'd be able to discuss rash last-minute changes to the bid. Of course, it's not a dealbreaker if this date suits everyone else more. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 13:57, 19 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
Assuming Sunday is good, that means the meetup must be on Jan 27, or Feb 10. All major information has to be finalised by Feb 3, and refinements by Feb 14. So, on Feb 10 we would only be discussing minor refinements and stuff, nothing rash. If it's that important, that means we have to have the meetup next Sunday. - Zero1328 Talk? 15:08, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Midday, Sunday, Pancake Manor Charlotte Street Google Map. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 09:59, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lankiveil's shadow account here - is it possible we can push this forward a couple of hours, to say 10am? Personal issues will preclude me from attending at midday, I'm afraid. If this will cause problems for anyone, then don't worry, I'll just have to show up next time. I apologise for the very late notice here. Salka (talk) 00:14, 8 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]
I'm fine with 10am.. should we just bring it forward then? — E talk 23:18, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it's become impossible for me to attend at all. Sorry dudes =(. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 00:37, 9 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]
In that case, we'll stick with midday. :( dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 06:15, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey how are we gonna know each other.... white carnations? (ps. shame about Lankiveil) --Jquarry (talk) 09:35, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It will be a table with a laptop and a Wikipedia page open. Of course, this depends on the wireless ;) — E talk 10:20, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The main talk point would probably be the Wikimania '09 Brisbane bid, but without Lankiveil (the main organiser) I don't see much point in going... - Zero1328 Talk? 11:28, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, you have a point. Even if the meeting isn't on, I'm sure myself and the family can still grab some excellent pancakes. I'm up for any weekend until the 24th. — E talk 11:34, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If I were coming, then you'd just look for the dork in the stupid hat. I'm pretty damn noticeable. A secret handshake or something could help though! I'm definitely up for a meet on a future day. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 12:31, 9 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]
We could have a third meetup on the 24th, seeing as we'd be more sure of ourselves in the bid. Like I said before, that date might let us cover more ground (and maybe have a bit of a party.) - Zero1328 Talk? 21:11, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
24th is fine for Meetup 3. — E talk 21:22, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
24th would be (tentatively, at least) OK for me. But let's go today anyway, Zero! (I just realised I'm wearing my primary school yr. 7 shirt, so we can trade some memories ;)) E, if you're getting there a bit earlier it'd be good, so I can look for the laptop. Hope to see you all there! dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 22:14, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bring Along? edit

Should there be any such requirements? I can bring my notebook if required. — E talk 04:24, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Not sure if I'll be able to take my (school provided, hence parent restricted) laptop. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 07:43, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I will be hosting a Skype Conference Call from the venue depending on wireless networks around the area. — E talk 12:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't we check that we can get connectivity first? Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 14:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the meeting will be on regardless of Skype, but I suppose can just check there. Organisation FTW. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 09:01, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see if I can pop along for lunch sometime this week with my laptop. No guarantees though. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 12:09, 4 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]
Might be able to pop through tomorrow afternoon... Anyone had any luck yet though? — E talk 09:53, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By this, I mean a) only if I'm available when you guys decide to have it (certainly don't base your meetup around me - that'd be silly), b) if it's at all possible, and c) if you want to bother. Daniel (talk) 05:25, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

Firstly, apologies to anyone who lives in Cairns etc. and got the bot notice - I ran it through Category:Wikipedians in Queensland (for a start), as there isn't much that's more narrow. Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 08:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now...locations? Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 08:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How about your house? Majorly (talk) 08:25, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you all turn out not to be a bunch of serial killers, I'm happy to have installment #3 at the "Chateau de Lankiveil". Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 10:10, 17 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
  • Why don't we invite someone from the Courier-Mail? (I'm serious btw) Slac speak up! 01:11, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're kidding, aren't you? Someone just walks up to a computer, dons the headphones, and starts interviewing those of us who participate via Skype. Hey, that's not a bad idea ;) ThirdEchelon (talk) 01:26, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That works on so many levels. You wanna get in touch with them, Slac? Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 07:05, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully you havent contacted anyone yet such an action could have serious implications. Gnangarra 12:40, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I share Gnangarra's concern about the idea of inviting a journalist to a WMA meetup. I honestly can't imagine the national media being interested in such a meeting unless it was with an agenda of trying to dig up a scandal or such but in the event they are interested, I really hope you guys are very careful about your meeting's agenda and what exactly you discuss. Sarah 12:58, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, you are joking, aren't you? What possible benefit is there in inviting journalists to our meetings? If you are serious, I'm afraid that I think it's a terrible idea. Lankiveil (complaints | disco) 07:00, 19 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
What could you possibly have against press interest in a meetup? I think press coverage of how Wikipedia is edited is the most important kind of press the encyclopedia can get at the moment, to increase the volume of helpful contributions. You also get your fifteen minutes of fame if that means anything to you. As for scandals, what scandals? If Wikipedia has anything to hide, don't you think it should be outed? Transparency is tremendously important to any hope of gaining credibility for Wikipedia. By all means, invite the kind of press who write the kind of articles that you would like written about you (i.e. papers with human interest sections, rather than a shock tabloid) but so long as you know who's coming, there's very little that anyone attending by invitation will be able to or try to misconstrue. Lighten up; you don't represent the WMF and the WMF doesn't own the work you do on the encyclopedia. BigBlueFish (talk) 17:59, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey the CM probably won't be interested anyway, it's nothing to do with sport lol... but what about that stapled collection of ad glossies, Brisbane City News. --Jquarry (talk) 09:13, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
...we have standards, mate ;) Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 00:18, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but Jimbo can still censure and/or ban you and/or have you eaten by a grue, and you don't want that, now do you? As for your message on my talk page, DHMO, well, I can probably get there via Skype if I can get a new USB headset. I wouldn't object as such to having reporters at the meetup, it's just that if they do arrive they're probably there looking for evidence on how Wikipedia is ZOMG THE SPAWN OF TEH DEVIL!!!!666. ThirdEchelon (talk) 09:51, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings from Melbourne. I'm not sure exactly when you are meeting, but I will have my laptop connected at the Melbourne Meetup from 3.00 p.m. our time and will get on the IRC channel if you want to talk. I suspect we will move to a cafe about 5.00 p.m. Have a great meetup. --Bduke (talk) 00:12, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

General talk… edit

Well, shame we didn’t get Skype working as planned. Next time we definitely need to organise things better! I’m not sure about a Feb 24 meet; is there anything Wikimania related happening around then, or is it just a random date? Because I have other gangstas to hang out with on weekends bucketload of homework that I relegate to weekends :) dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 07:00, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
