Adamstown

Ireland's newest planned town for over twenty years saw the first sod turned today [1]. The town, Adamstown, will be the first town created since Shannon Town - if successful - officaldom has been talking about it for several years now. It might be worth an article?

Djegan 18:56, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Definately worth an article. CGorman 21:46, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I agree. But what exactly is planned? I sincerely hope that the entire thing is sensible. They seem to think locating it beside a railway line makes the entire project good planning. They had better be upgrading the Kildare line to quadruple track as planned - and soon. It's about the busiest mainline in the country for Intercity (northern line out of Connolly is probably more congested for commuter traffic). And people in this new development had better be relying on rail - goodness knows the N7 is busy enough already. Even despite the rail I am not sure it's sensible building up along the busiest road route in the country.

I wish I'd kept all the old Liffey Champions from the past few years...
Its a full town, with 3 primary and one secondary school, train station, police and fire stations, health centre, etc - a lot of stuff Lucan actually hasn't got itself yet. I never thought it'd get built, its been planned for so many years
Kiand 15:37, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I hope it goes well. I hadn't realised it had been planned for some time. Perhaps that new planned city in the West (Mayo I think) will also go ahead - though I wouldn't hold my breath! It was definitely in planning at one stage a few years back and was even more ambitious than Adamstown. zoney talk 16:52, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Adamstown, County Dublin - let the games commence! Djegan 15:24, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

University of Limerick

A very serious allegation was raised on the University of Limerick article [2] I believe that it is nothing more than inuendo and maybe a hatchet job at the named politican. I am not very up on these sort of issues ("recent investigations and tribunals...") and believe it should be removed if false - the anoymous user has recently posted many edits of a political nature on Irish articles. Djegan 18:53, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I have removed this, and brought up on the talk page some issues to be addressed before anyone re-inserts any related topic. zoney talk 21:21, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Agreed, the question of raising the former National Institute for Higher Education to the status of university was a serious matter and several national and international experts in education recommended on the issue. Djegan 21:30, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Economy of Ireland featured article

With the Economy of Ireland on the main page, once again Irish-related articles are to the forefront. We should all be vigilant against vandalism - there seems to be a lot of activity at the moment.

zoney talk 11:29, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Nice to see it there. Filiocht 12:47, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)
It is indeed. Although I'm a bit disappointed that Geography of Ireland has been passed up twice since Christmas. It hasn't been on the main page yet. Still, if the over-representation of Irish topics keep up, hopefully it'll only be a month or two before it gets a shot at being on main page again! zoney talk 13:02, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

To do list

I've fixed the to do list. Perhaps we should rethink how we use the list. Some of the items have been there for some time. zoney talk 13:02, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Zoney, i've made a few minor additions/moves on the list, but noting much. CGorman 20:55, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Irish railway station names

I'm not sure where best to incorporate this information, but I would like to. I also discovered that Pearse Station IS often called Pearse Street Station due to the nearby Pearse Street. And apparently even IÉ have occasionally used the latter.

Sligo Station name confirmed Sligo Champion - Wednesday 9 February 2005
FOLLOWING representations from Senator Paschal Mooney, Joe Meagher, Managing Director of Iarnrod Eireann has confirmed that the name for Sligo Station is Sligeach (Mhic Dhiarmada)/Sligo (MacDiarmada).
In a letter to Senator Mooney, Mr. Meagher clarifies the position as regards the re-naming of certain stations in 1966.
"At the outset I would like to clarify the position as regards the renaming of certain stations in 1966.
"Fifteen stations on the CIE system were renamed on Easter Sunday, April 10th 1966, after the leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916 who were executed.
"In the case of the three Dublin Stations, the names of Westland Row Station, Amiens Street Station and Kingsbridge Station ceased to be used and Pearse Station, Connolly Station and Heuston Station are used instead. When speaking or writing in Irish, the Irish forms Staisiun Piarsach, Staisiun I Chongaile and Staisiun Heuston were used.
"In the case of twelve stations outside Dublin which were renamed, the existing name indicating location continues to be used in addition to the new name. The stations and names are:
Limerick, (Colbert Station); Dun Laoghaire, (Mallin); Waterford, (Plunkett); Galway, (Ceannt); Dundalk, (Clarke); Drogheda, (MacBride); Sligo, (MacDiarmada); Bray, (Daly); Wexford, (O'Hanrahan); Kilkenny, (MacDonagh); Tralee, (Casement); Cork, (Thomas Kent). Therefore the signage for Sligo Station should read: Sligeach (MhicDhiarmada)/Sligo (MacDiarmada).
"At the moment there are a number of signs in Sligo Station which refer to Sean MacDiarmada. For instance, just inside the main entrance is the original plaque commemorating the renaming in 1966. At the Eastern end of both platforms are two large signs with Staisiun Shean Mhic Dhiarmada/Sligo Station. However, the smaller "repeater" signs along the platform walls do not refer to MacDiarmada. I am making arrangements to have these replaced with correctly worded signs in the New Year" the letter concludes.

zoney talk 13:02, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yep, right now on Platform 1 (ie, Northboun/Westbound) at Pearse Station there is an official IÉ timetable with the words "Pearse Street Station" at the top of it, which has never been the station name. Western Commuter services have a recorded voiceover which says "This train is for Dublin Pearse" on it. I've seen the name of the station (Kent/Ceannt) written on signage at Cork/Galway stations, but never at Limerick Colbert station (other than a small plaque referring to the rename of the station). Or at any other IÉ station for that matter. Signage at IÉ stations is pretty inconsistant anyway - there are at least three varieties of name signage at my local station. rdd 16:05, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Irish Television

I wouldn't mind taking a stab at expanding anything to do with this (though I'd be better on recent info). I noticed List of RTÉ television programming on the To Improve list. What needs to be done there? just updating, changing it from a list, or creating pages for the programmes? -- Lochaber 13:19, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You could put a Irish TV related article up for WP:ICOTW - it might help revive the project - i'll give you my support as long as its a relatively interesting article. CGorman 20:59, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

New here

Hi I'm new to Wikipedia, I've done a few things around the place. I'm irish so I'd like to tell other irish wikipedians that I exist. Wikipedian231 17:16, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Everyone knows that we've fallen behind on this - it's now listed as defunct. So basically we need to collectively restart it - the next ICOTW will be decided on Sunday 13th Feb - please nominate/vote for the candidate you deem the wortiest before end of Sunday. Hopefully we can get it going again - remember how successful Geography of Ireland was - 5000% increase in size and FA status. Come on - we can do this! CGorman 21:29, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Irish Mythology

I probably should have looked at this earlier, but I only now found out about the wealth of information already on Wikipedia about Irish mythology. Highly recommended reading! There's substantial material in all the sub-articles.

Perhaps we should link to/introduce this whole area more? Certainly it could be introduced/linked to from Ireland - but where?

zoney talk 22:37, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  • Since it has common ground with the musical and oral traditions (thinking of bards etc.), perhaps linking out from culture and/or early history (thinking of the quasi-mythological Stories about St.Patrick and the replacement of the "heathen" beliefs by christianity)? Irish language in Northern Ireland

Their is a proposal to delete Irish language in Northern Ireland and merge with Irish language#Northern Ireland - i have yet to decide which side i will take but believe that it is an important issue. Djegan 22:12, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

See my comments there. I'm leaning more towards keep, on the premise that the topic should (ideally) be too long to merge fully. zoney talk 22:34, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The Gaiety School of Acting

After updating the biographies of a few Irish actors, including Stuart Townsend and Colin Farrell (under the IP address 193.120.123.2), I thought I should start an article on the Gaiety School of Acting (which they both attended). I intend to add to it at some point however for the moment there's just a stub. So if anyone else has any information then off you go! -- Thanks, Lochaber 11:05, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Electricity Supply Board

Its the collaboration of the week and i've done a large amount of writing recently - I hav'nt had time to proof read, check for spelling errors etc., so proof readers please take a look... Oh and don't be afraid to add your own info! CGorman 23:04, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

EU-stub

Hi everyone, possibly I should post this somewhere else but I'll ask it here first. I want to create a Template:EU-stub for topics directly related to the EU, like different programmes that it runs or treaties/acts that only have stubs, however I am not sure how to word it. I don't think it would really be specific enough to say "This European Union related article is a stub... &c" because people might start putting things like cities in there even though there already country related geo stubs and a euro-geo-stub. What does anyone else think? is it even worth creating? -- Lochaber 17:14, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It is worth creating. How about:
This article, related to the operation of the European Union, is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.
zoney talk 20:43, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion! I think I might say:
This article, related to European Union operations, is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.
Just because then it can refer operations of or operations by I know it's a bit imprecise but I think it should cover both, to me anyway a treaty would be an operation of while a programme run by them would be an operation by. -- Lochaber 10:25, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
That's nicer alright. It can be amended by others if necessary.
I've added it to a bunch of pages, but people should go through Category:European Union and subcats. Incidentally a lot of less major EU articles need organisation, copyediting, etc. I think our coverage of the EU is appropriate - it's a mess/maze of complicated and unclearly presented information. zoney talk 11:40, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

So this article is on the front page and is very good, but doesn't have the Northern Ireland murals! I had a quick look around but there doesn't seem to be examples on Wikipedia, does anyone know better or have any photos of their own? Notjim 07:57, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

One or two pics on Derry (wouldn't you know! Pity there's not just a nice photo of the city centre). zoney talk 10:21, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I had seen those, but they aren't great; what is needed is one of the classic examples with a slogan and some of that striking naive art iconography. I agree re Derry btw, its a fine looking town. Notjim 10:32, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Actually found some on commons so i've done this now. Notjim 23:17, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
