Accounts Created 24 new accounts were created as a result of the University of Edinburgh's Innovative Learning Week editathon series, held daily from 16-19 February. Approximately 85-90% of the new editors were women.

8 new accounts were created as a result of the Dundee Art and Feminism editathon on 6 March 2015 at the University of Abertay; training was shared by WiR@MGS and WiR@NLS. Approximately 80-90% of participants were women.

Outreach

Objective: Delivery of 3+ public workshops for editors (i.e. edit-a-thons); help organise and host other Wikimedia related events for members of the public, Wikimedians, researchers and librarians such as workshops, Edit-athons, meetups, backstage pass tours

17th Month Outcomes:
  • Approximately 40 people attended over the course of the week, with 24 new accounts being created as a result of the training
  • Several participants returned throughout the week, and many people 'dropped in' for part of the session due to the level of interest generated amongst the University staff and students, and on social media (particularly twitter)
  • 18 articles were improved during the course of the event, and 12 new articles were created; while the numbers are not as high as participation and length of the events might suggest, the quality of articles created, in particular articles like Edinburgh University Settlement, Margaret Ida Balfour, Elsie Stephenson, and Christian Shaw are quite high for editathon articles, and the extent to which editors continued work after the event was extremely encouraging
  • The impact of the events were highlighted for staff and students at the University during an Innovative Learning Week Fair on 20 February (with wine and cupcakes)
  • The events have had a significant impact within the University of Edinburgh, with the new Student Engagement Officer User:ETwomey launching a monthly University of Edinburgh lunchtime meetup called a 'Wiki Hour of Power' - first session held 04 March to mark International Women's Day on 08 March (WiR@NLS present in personal capacity), next planned for 01 April to mark Edinburgh International Science Festival; User:ETwomey is also exploring the process of becoming the University of Edinburgh's campus ambassador with assistance/advice from User:ACrockford
  • Training was shared by WiR@MGS and WiR@NLS
  • The 06 March event and a follow-up on 07 March saw the creation of 10 new articles and the improvement of one existing article
  • Work organising planned international symposium exploring IPR and digital access has continued
  • Symposium would be an attempt to bring together representatives from GLAMs in the EU, UK, and potentially further abroad to discuss their different perspectives of and experiences with IPR, digital content, and facilitating access (open access or otherwise)
  • User:ACrockford spoke as part of the University of Edinburgh's Open.Ed workshop on 09 March, discussing the use of Wikipedia/Wikimedia in University classes and its benefits, as well as the success of the Innovative Learning Week events in February

Internal impact

Objective: Organise and host workshops for Library staff to explain how they can directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles; deliver 7+ workshops for National Library of Scotland staff and researchers or related institutions; develop infrastructure for sustainable partnership between NLS and WMUK after residency ends

17th Month Outcomes:

Note: After some members of staff at the NLS raised concerns regarding the release of content onto a CC-0 license on a mass scale, uploads were put on hold to allow for internal conversations regarding the releasing of digital content onto open licenses. Internal events - workshops and seminars - are under way to encourage discussion and reach a consensus

  • An internal seminar at the NLS on access to digitised public domain content online was held on 27 February.
  • The results of an internal questionnaire, distributed prior to the seminar, suggested that staff across the Library generally held widening access as a major priority, and many saw opening access (i.e. less restrictive licensing) as a viable possibility but this was by no means universal, and was complemented by a significant number of respondents identifying 'cost recovery' or income generation as a similarly important aim - most respondents did not see the two as mutually exclusive in the questionnaire
  • During discussions, these positions were clarified, and the concern regarding potential for income generation was a primary topic of conversation. It was noted that different types of resources from different teams within the Library (i.e. Maps Library, Scottish Screen Archives) have different income generation models in place which have a markedly different generation rate than content in the digital gallery; while it was agreed on by many participants that income generation from licensing was not an ideal or efficient method of cost recovery, this was also acknowledged to vary according to types of media
  • Outcomes from the seminar included agreement to form a working group to finalise 'access quality' definitions in order to allow implementation of the April 2014 Metadata and Digital Content Licensing Policy to proceed; it was understood that this may involve setting unique definitions for different media types
  • Further outcomes included the resolution to continue monitoring statistics for openly licensed trial images and to compare these with sales data generated by content recently released to the British Library's Picture Library and other income-generating services, to determine the impact of open licensing on cost recovery
  • It was agreed that results from the seminar, and various consensuses reached, would influence the development of the NLS's 2015 strategy plan, which is still being drafted internally and should be released Summer 2015
  • Conversations with Digital Access Manager at the NLS regarding the implementation of a 'cite this on Wikipedia' button similar to that used by Europeana and soon to be included on NLW resources have taken place; as the NLS is currently undergoing a redesign of the Digital Gallery, it is hoped that such a service could be easily incorporated into the new site design along with other citation options
  • This was also discussed during the WiR@NLW's visit on 11 March, as the incorporation of such a tool is something currently being implemented by the National Library of Wales after the first month of their residency

Objective: Help establish relationships with the Scottish Wikimedia community, editors and projects

17th Month Outcomes:
  • Created a post-event welcome template designed specifically for events organisers or trainers to welcome participants of an editathon, encourage them to continue editing, and provide some sources for training refreshers (see User:ACrockford/Welcomeevent) - part of effort to boost new-editor retention

Material for future digitisation

Objective: Explore adding digital resources such as digitised books, articles, photographs and posters to Wikimedia Commons; work with staff, including librarians and curators, to identify areas of Wikipedia and sister projects that could be enriched with resources and knowledge from the Library’s collections

17th Month Outcomes:

After some members of staff at the NLS raised concerns regarding the release of content onto a CC-0 license on a mass scale, uploads have put on hold for the time being. Conversations regarding the Library's implementation of the Metadata and Digital Content Licensing Policy (approved Spring 2014) are ongoing

Forthcoming projects

Additional funding has been secured to extend the post to the end of April 2015; further external funding is being sought to allow for key projects to be wrapped up and to provide the opportunity for a more in-depth analysis of the residency's impact. Projects that hope to be covered by additional funding include:

  • Organise GLAMWiki toolset training webinar with support from Digital Access manager @ National Library of Scotland
  • Write articles summarising impact of residency with specific attention paid to the gender gap
  • Compile Wikipedia:GLAM case study about the developments with respect to use of open licenses at NLS and the residency and broader impact
    • Write article on open licensing @NLS Case Study
  • Develop GLAMWiki mass upload Toolset user guide aimed at GLAM organisations with Digital Access team, and one aimed at Wikimedians working with GLAM organisations
  • Film-related editathon for Kelvin Hall Project (Scottish Screen Archive in collaboration with MGS)
  • Run reverse image searches on NLS content
    • Compile case study 1 year after trial release of images (using GLAM metrics, Google analytics, reverse image search)
    • Write up impact report and case study for CILIP Update magazine, WMUK blog
  • Design and organise a training webinar series (3x bi-weekly sessions) for Scottish GLAMs and educators
  • Organise a second ‘Working with Wikipedia’ workshop for Scottish GLAMs with MGS WinR
  • Run 2x Wikipedia translation training/Wikisource transcription training pilot sessions (with selected HEI Gaelic programmes i.e. UHI)
