1. Poland: Beskid and Podhale edit

Initial assumptions and plan edit

Schedule of field trip edit

The Museum was responsible for setting up the team schedule, consisting of three main areas:

  • Meetings at local museums and open-air museums
  • Meetings with local craftsmen and artisans
  • Public (or half-public, eg. a local folk workshop for young people) events and social gatherings, festivals, etc.

Team coordination edit

  • Klara Sielicka, main Museum coordinator, posted a preliminary schedule detailing a list of meetings, and locations, for each day of the trip, on Wiki, for all team members to find and take note.
  • Team members communicated through the mailing list dedicated to the project, and through email and phone – Klara Sielicka (Museum) and Marta Moraczewska (Wikimedia) being two joint coordinators informing everyone of times, dates and organisational details.
  • We made a list of photo equipment necessary to take good pictures of items and clothing, and took test pictures before trip #1.
  • Organisational: Marta (WMPL) and Klara (Museum) were in charge of collecting invoices for fuel, meals and accommodation.

Structure of work days edit

  • The team visited 2 locations - Beskid Zywiecki and Podhale - 2 places of accommodation (3 nights + 2 nights).
  • In each location the team visited 2 to 3 places or people every day.
  • Working hours were on average from 9AM to 6PM (but in some cases, recording at night or skipping lunch!)
  • We had limited time for each place. This became an issue in larger museums, where the team divided into mini sub-teams: filming/interview team; photography team; and reference team (scanning books).

The team visited:

  • The outdoor Mass of the Assumption of Mary (święto Matki Boskiej Zielnej) with Beskid folklore musicians (photos, film)
  • Outdoor celebrations following the Mass with folklore group (photos, film)
  • The workshop and dressing room of Jadwiga Jurasz, artisan tailor, maker of garments modeled on old Beskid Żywiecki designs (photos, interviews)
  • The workshop at local cultural centre led by folk music instruments craftsman (film, interview, photos)
  • Artisan maker of kierpce shoes in Jaworzynka (Beskid Śląski) (photos, film, interview)
  • Outdoor museum in Milówka - Stara Chałupa (photos, film)
  • The City Museum in Żywiec (photos, book scans, workshop, interviews) – large museum, no Wikipedia entry in English, added to list
  • The Dom Ludowy in Bukowina Tatrzańska (photos)
  • The Tatra Museum in Zakopane (photos, film, interviews, book scans) – large museum, no Wikipedia entry in English
  • The Zagroda Korkoszów Museum in Czarna Góra – outdoor museum, no Wikipedia entry (already on list)
  • Artisan maker of Podhale jewelry and belts (film, photos)

We took around 3000 images, out of which we plan to upload 300 or more of the highest-quality ones. Museum filmmaker recorded interviews and scenes as planned.

Follow-up edit

  • Articles: we're updating the article list to include additional missing articles identitified by Museum team during the trip.
  • Images: we run most photos through GIMP or similar programs to end up with good quality images.
  • Example standard description of a photo
  • Apart from articles, in case of visited museums, we will add new Commons Institution and Creator templates
  • Once the extended article list is ready and we upload more images, we'll notify the wider community to participate in editing.

  • Many article ideas beyond the ones listed in the grant became apparent during the course of the trip. The ethnographers in the field could pinpoint many missing or barely existing articles, in different languages.
  • For events, camera and video camera. For cultural centres and museums - photographic mobile studio proved useful to achieve decent quality images.
  • Contacts were established in largest local museums, which may well result in more content (director of the Tatra Museum turned out to be a beginner Wikipedian; local photographers are interested in CC licenses)
  • Presence of specialists from another Museum together with Wikipedians made it easier to convince museum staff locally to help the project effort
  • Museum staff allowed the team into archives and allowed us to photograph catalogue cards to help with Commons descriptions; for small museums, several hours of photography results in mini-digitisation, and the museum can reuse the images on its own website and other materials. This might encourage the museums to continue releasing images onto Wikimedia Commons.
  • Visits and direct contact also help in terms of gathering good sources - Museums allow the team to scan parts of books from their library; local bookshops and libraries are the place to find rare subject literature. We found taking a scanner along was very useful.

Structure of work days: We were working till the late night hours; the team often split into two groups to record more interviews or to take more photos

We were able to gather a lot of interesting material that will serve the popularization of folk art and traditions of the region Muramar in Wikipedia in three languages: Romanian, Polish and English. In addition to the complex passwords and articles appear there numerous photos and video clips. During our stay we conducted 10 video interviews with museum workers, ethnographers and artists. Our recordings will help to prepare at least a dozen of shorter video clips. We were able to make hundreds of unique images. We visited and took photos around Ethnographic Museum in Baia Mare and open-air museum in Sighet (part of Museum of Maramaros region).

- 10 interviews filmed: 4 in which museum, the rest - with artists: ceramic craftman (he makes items in Dacia type of ceramics; we interviewed about this Professor - co-founder of the museum in Syghet), woodcarver (gates and other wooden forms), wood sculptor (crosses for the cemetery in Sapanta), embroidery and manufacture of shirts, modern wood products (caskets toys, sculptures in bottles) the latter is a young computer scientist, hobbyist with a workshop in the country that has learned to work with wood on the Internet, he also builds machines woodworking by own ideas or projects from the network).

• We visted The Library of Wallachian Open Air Museum, documenting articles about Local wooden architecture, Regional Costumes, Rites of Easter, Folk Art and Craft. • We met with the management and ethnographers of Wallachian Open Air Museum Rožnov pod Radhoštěm (presentation and discussion about Carpathian Ethnography Project; Wikipedia workshop and presentation: How to work with Wikipedia and Wikimedia and GLAM). • We were filming and taking photos of The Wallachian Village (different parts and during Easter Fair). • We made interviews with local ethnographers about local wooden architecture and history of Wallachian Open Air Museum and about local folk costumes of Moravian Wallachia, also with local craftsmen and other.

• We were documenting local Easter ritual called "Rapač" (rattling), participating in events and recording interviews about history of rite "Rapač" with local participants and with local ethnographers Hážovice. We were documenting during the night twice (e.g. there was a night registration "Tatar" (Easter whip)Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, Zubří, Horní Bečva

• We made interviews in Francova Lhota with local artists such as Jan Brlica (older), Jan Brlica (younger) and Jiří Ptáček. We documented their works around ( Lidečko, Valašská Senice, Dešná (Slovakia) ) • Interview with folk artist Vladislava Hrubešová about local folk costumes; with folk artist Michaela Bařinová about creating local folk costumes for baby dolls and Easter eggs; with folk artists Bohdanka Pečinová, Svatava Pavlicová about tradition of painting Easter eggs; with folk artist Vít Kašpařík about local folk musical instruments - wallachian pipes.

  • - several interviews with ethnographers/museum workers in Slovak National Museum (in MARTIN and in open -air Museum of Slovak Village in Martin)- about the museum, about collection, about folk costumes in Slovakia, about open-air museum`s buildings
  • -documentation (for Commons) of the objects out from SNM`s colletion in Martin (especially chosen)
  • -participation/documentation in The Feast of Corpus Christi in Vrútky
  • -trip to ČIČMANY village/open-air museum: interview with museum worker about history of this place, documentation of the buildings and of the exhibitions inside the houses; interview with craftwoman about embroidery
  • -visiting Folklore Festival in Myjava, interviewing bagpipes` players and makers + bobbin lace makers and other craftmen;
  • -trip to Stara and Nova Lubovla: documentation of open-air museum, recording/interviewing dance by folk dancers from MARMON group and songs by musicians from Pastrnoci group. Interviews with the leaders (musician and singer/tailor) of both groups - about history of this area, those groups, about instruments and traditional costumes. Interview with local folk tailor, recording process of wearing the bride`s headscarf. Interview with local craftman about belt making. Documentation of his workshop took place, too.
  • -trip to Bardejov: interview with the director of Museum of Icons and documentation of the interior; visiting the open-air museum Bardejov-Kupele (documentation of the buildings and interview with local museum worker)

(around 9 a.m). This tserkva belongs to Orthodox Church of Kiev Patriarchate.
  • visiting local artisans and their workshops (focus on icon painters and makers of traditional costume/farbrics)
