Original – The Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay at foggy sunset. The fog of San Francisco Bay is a specific type of fog. It is a sea fog identified as advection fog, which is characterized by the lateral transfer of temperature by wind blowing over cooler water.Coastal areas having Mediterranean climates, such as that of San Francisco, have especially frequent sea fog blowing off the ocean to just a few miles inland. This San Francisco fog was taken into account during construction of Golden Gate Bridge. At one point experts doubt the bridge could be built there at all. They said that ferocious winds and blinding fogs would prevent construction and operation. Fog also played a role in choosing the color of the bridge, and red color was chosen because red color enhances the bridge's visibility in fog. Midspan navigation lighting that is used by passing vessels contains eight vertical lights, four on each side. They are located at the center of the Bridge just below the deck. The top three lights are white, and the bottom light is green. The image also depicts San Francisco Bay, and the waterway entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean that is called the Golden Gate.
Reason
Encyclopedic, high quality, adds value to the articles, the only image that connects red color of the bridge to the fog.

  • Info The image was nominated before, but now I added to the caption for a bigger EV.
  • Info This image File:San francisco in fog with rays.jpg has FP status, but it was taken against the rising sun, and shows no red color of the bridge.
  • The image has been nominated twice before: 1 and 2. Papa Lima Whiskey 2 (talk) 20:36, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment If it's taken "against the rising sun", I don't get it, as the camera is looking to the east, but the light seems to be coming from the west. Also, I've always heard that the color of the bridge was the under paint, meant to be covered by a top coat, until people decided to like the color. I think any "facts" should have citations. • Info Both images the nominated one and the current FP were taken from about the same place, but the current FP was taken at sunrise against the rising sun, and therefore shows no red color of the bridge. The nominated image was taken at sunset, with the bridge lit by the setting sun. Here's one link, and another one that explain the selection of the color of the Bridge. • Support Nice composition and setting, in terms of the bridge and bay this is way better than the aforementioned existing FP. Brandmeistertalk 11:31, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Great picture. Has EV and is of good technical standards. Dusty777 (talk) 02:08, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support seems less sharp than it could be. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:03, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose If you look at the photo on full, the lights and vertical wires on the bridge do not look as sharp as they should be. sorry --Guerillero | My Talk 01:42, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Tomer T (talk) 09:16, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as before. This is neither a good depiction of the bridge nor of the bay. A shot without fog has much more EV for both. Makeemlighter (talk) 10:24, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as comments on the previous FPCs. This is not adding much to any of the articles. Let it go. J Milburn (talk) 11:42, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
