- Haeckel's work (with some notable exceptions in embryology) is usually considered reasonably accurate. ernst Haeckel was a major 19th century biologist, though he's best known today for "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny", a misguided notion. Obviously, we shouldnðt be using him for cladistics or developmental biology, but he's quite accurate in his depiction of macroscopic organisms, as far as an artistically-arranged painting goes, and they are certainly excellent and encyclopaedic overviews of the subjects, showing the variety very well. He is also notable as one of the earliest major users of colour lithography. In my opinion, he's certainly accurate enough for an overview, and his overviews are usually praised for artistry as much as biology. As they are artistic portrayals, however, I wouldn't use him for identification of individual species. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 11:54, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
