Batea is a research project to understand how readers and editors use health information on Wikipedia.

If you use Google Chrome as your Internet browser, then consider registering for the research project as a way to learn about it.

Project summary edit

This is one perspective of the Batea project. Please read the official website for the official explanation.

  1. The Batea project seeks to find people who read or contribute health information on Wikipedia.
    1. Medical students are especially desired as project participants
    2. Anyone in any circumstances is allowed to participate, even though not everyone may be a target of study recruitment
  2. Anyone wishing to join the study should complete the consent process at Batea: Help Improve Medical Wikipedia Articles
  3. Part of the consent process includes installing a plug-in to Google Chrome
  4. This plug-in, in a limited way, watches the editing habits of those in the study
    1. The plug-in is designed to be minimally invasive
    2. It notes whatever a person reads on Wikipedia
    3. It notes when a research participant goes to certain popular sources of academic medical information, including for example PubMed and UpToDate
    4. The researchers have made a good faith attempt to not collect information which is not relevant to describing Wikipedia readership and especially the connection between Wikipedia and medical research among students in medical school
  5. More information is available at the Batea website and please see also the research review of this project on Meta-Wiki at meta:Research:Batea
