Arabic edit
I noticed you commented on the BLP noticeboard on material for Yusuf al-Qaradawi. Do you speak Arabic? Your continued input on the noticeboard is much appreciated. (My Arabic is quite poor, actually) VR talk 18:01, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
No I don't speak Arabic, so I am not qualified to judge translations. The point of my comments on the BLP notice board was simply to say that MEMRI was probably taking material selectively since the 2 segments were less then a minute long.
I was not trying to idealize Qaradawi either. He does hold positionso n the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that I do not agree with, such as the legitimacy of the killing of Israeli civilians. That being said I do believe much has been incorrectly attributed to him for purposes of discrediting all him as an individual Yster76 [[User talk:Yster76| 21:40 (UTC)
- I completely agree with you. Qaradawi's positions on killing Israeli civilians are contrary to human rights and Islam. Thousands of Muslim clerics have accused him of "providing a religious cover for terrorism".[1] And that's Saudi clerics, who are known for their orthodoxy.
- At the same time its important not exaggerate Qaradawi's statements. Also please comment on the discussion at Talk:Yusuf al-Qaradawi, since we're going over the same issues.VR talk 05:29, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Sorry guys for the interruption. It's true about MEMRI, but they work so hard to hide their biasness. Actually, many of their founders are formal Israeli militant and officials, so there's no need to guess why their articles are like that :). Anyways, I've studied and lived in the Middle-East for sometime, so my Arabic is academically acceptable. Keep me in your list if you need any help in the future, and we can research it together. Qaradawi Article revert edit
You reverted this text:

Putting it back to this:
Brookings Institution member, Shadi Hamid sees no threat from Qaradawi and states that he is in the mainstream of Egyptian society, and that he also has appeal among Egyptians who are not Islamist.
Your reasoning was that the earlier text was more NPOV. Why do you feel that?
Personally, I think that "sees no threat" is an interpretation on what Hamid might of meant. Unless I missed it, I couldn't find where Hamid said that. Not being "distinctive or radical" in the context of Egypt, doesn't necessarily imply that he's not a threat.
I'm planning on getting rid of the staetment that "he's not a threat", and keeping it straightforward and simply regarding what he said. But I wanted to discuss it with you first.
What was your objection to getting rid of "sees no threat"? Did Hamid actually say that, and I just missed it in the article?

The initial reason why I used NPOV is because "points out" presents something as a fact. Having said that in retrospect I can see that Shadi Hamid did not in anyway say that he wasn't a threat just that he was in the Egyptian mainstream. So I can understand why you would change it.
Original Research edit
You added some information to the article of Yusuf al-Qaradawi citing "Showing a more complete view". I have removed this as it isOriginal research and a breach of WP:OR. I strongly recommend, you read the Wikipedia policies on biographies WP:BLP so to understand why the section was removed and the strict standards of sourcing. If you feel, a view is incomplete, by all means, do find some independent reliable secondary source to cover the information. Otherwise it will be deemed non-notable and possibly a POV. Apostasy edit? edit
You have explained your edit: "the site linked to is clearly biased. There are many references to Islamic scholars who do not port the penalty for apostasy in this article." How can Islamonline.net be biased? The same article by Yusuf Al-Qaradawi can be found on many neutral sites by searching: (yusuf apostasy major minor). And there is no scholar (alim) in the original linked articles that rejects the capital punishment. Davidelah (talk) 22:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
They quoted the source accurately but my contention was that it was being presented as fact not as opinion. There are Islamic scholars who say that the penalty is no longer applicable.
Jamal Badawi who is a member of the Fiqh Council of North America writes,"The preponderance of evidence from both the Qur’an and Sunnah indicates that there is no firm ground for the claim that apostasy is in itself a mandatory fixed punishment [Hadd], namely capital punishment"
He goes on to state that the punishment was meant for protecting the early Muslim community, not simply for leaving Islam.
Also the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Gomaa has also said that the penalty no longer applies

Meet-up: Editors from Malaysia edit
Hello! You might or might not have seen me around here as I've not been active in Wikipedia the past few months. Before leaving for NS, it was my intention to form a Malaysian user group. I'm still very much interested in forming the group. However, before forming the group, I would love to organize a meet-up between editors of the Malaysian editing community to test the waters and hear what you guys might have to say. To my knowledge, there has not been a Wikipedia meet-up in this country before. I don't mind organizing the meet-up but need to know if anyone is interested in joining the meet-up. Domestic violence against men edit
Hi Yster. So I've been following the additions you've been making to domestic violence against men, translating material from the Spanish wiki and introducing it. Some really good work. The reason I mention it is because just before you started bringing in the new material, I started work on a complete overhaul of the entire article, introducing a lot more references/empirical research/quotations/stats etc. When I saw what you were doing, I put my stuff on hold, because there's no point in us overlapping. So I'm just curious do you have much more left to do, or do you know roughly when you might be finished? I'm not trying to rush you or anything, I'm just wondering. Cheers. Can you help verify translations of articles from Arabic edit
Hello,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Arabic to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Arabic article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Arabic , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Arabic. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Arabic article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)
