October 2022 edit

Hi YourboyTim. Thanks for your recent contributions. I wanted to let you know that I reverted some of your edits, like those at Battle of Gettysburg, because they conflict with the guidelines in Template:Infobox military conflict. For example, 'result' is supposed to be either 'X victory' or 'inconclusive'. Also, we try to limit the number of commanders listed for each side to those at the very highest levels, in most cases nobody below a general. Even as it is we probably have too many listed. I encourage you to keep editing but just wanted you to be aware of why I reverted some. Thanks. CWenger (^@) 15:45, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if it is you, but the amount of commanders or General is too much for the Union Side... YourboyTim (talk) 22:15, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wasn't me but you are absolutely right. I have reduced it. CWenger (^@) 00:58, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey there! Same deal with Battle of Chancellorsville infobox. Don't want to slow your roll, new wikipedian, quite the contrary. But let's keep infobox commanders a tight top-most group. More than any other quality, we value boldness, and you seem to have that. Welcome to Wikipedia and feel free to call on me or User:CWenger for help if you need it. The ACW task force is thattaway; please consider joining us. BusterD (talk) 16:56, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well here's the thing as a American Civil War nerd, Joseph Hooker is not the only commander in the battle of Chancellorsville, Daniel Sickles and Oliver Otis Howard is part of corps too. Also it looks uneven on both the Union and Confederate side. YourboyTim (talk) 19:20, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

CC @BusterD. This discussion would be better on one of the article pages, but I'm of the opinion that we should stick to army-level commanders. If we include corps commanders because there's not many on the Confederate side then we should do the same for the Union side, and we have to pick and choose which are most important or else there's an unbalance. I guess you could make an argument for listing commanders that are effectively in command due to the lack of a superior present, like Reynolds on the first day at Gettysburg, but I think that would take too much effort for not much information added. Thanks, CWenger. I think the most important thing is that we're talking about it rather than edit warring about it. If smart people always agreed this encyclopedia would practically write itself. But since they often have reasons to disagree in good faith, they need to vigorously disagree (with reasons and sources). I do agree the best place for these sorts of minor disagreements is almost always on the appropriate article talk page. BusterD (talk) 20:23, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
This is a perennial infobox problem, editors tend to load them up with details and nuance that are best discussed in the artice text. Infobox bloat is to be avoided, it's a concise summary.. Acroterion (talk) 22:43, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

December 2022 edit

I'm sorry to keep bugging you about this, but we don't need or want an extended list of commanders in most military conflict infoboxes as was explained to you in the October section above. Please keep commander lists in infoboxes brief, usually only the topmost commander is essential; the rest are adequately discussed in the body of the article. BusterD (talk) 20:11, 21 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to come crying at you, but Division commanders and Brigade Generals help carry out the plans from the General like what happened at the Battle of Fredericksburg. They are important commanders to the battle which can either make a turning point to the Battle or ruin the plans and screw the Army of the Potomac. Richmond, Virginia edit

I reverted your additions to Richmond, Virginia, because you added significant unsourced content, and removed sourced content. You are welcome to add your edit back, with a reliable source. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:50, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
