Infobox photo discussion edit

Hi. I've begun a consensus discussion here regarding the Infobox photo. I think I summarized your position and mine accurately, but if you feel I did not, feel free to clarify by chiming in on the talk page. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 15:47, 24 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Nightscream: Thanks for starting this, it will be good to have a resolution to this. Wayomui (talk) 19:03, 24 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Welcome! edit

Hello, Wayomui, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Dustin Nguyen (comics), which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Hi, Wayomui. The above is a boilderplate welcome that may or may not apply to you. Please forgive its impersonal generality. It's been suggested by an User:Nightscream that you may know Dustin Nguyen whose article you are editing. Please read WP:COISELF in case that is true. Would you be willing to disclose your relationship to the subject of the article? Do you personally know him? Are you him? Editors are expected to be here to build an encyclopedia not for promotional purposes. Jason Quinn (talk) 02:22, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jason Quinn: I am not Dustin Nguyen, he is a friend of mine. This issue with User:Nightscream and his image came about during a conversation I had with Dustin Nguyen at Comic-Con and he mentioned that his wikipedia picture was outdated and he wish he could change it to the one that other sites like Amazon, Comixology, etc use of him. I said if he had that picture (which he did and took himself and supplied to the various sites) I could probably update it for him, and that is what I did. I assumed having a more relevant picture even with sunglasses would make more sense since that is how I usually see him at conventions and thought that would be helpful to other people who seek him out at comic conventions. When I was updating his picture, I decided to make edits to his bibliography and update his notable awards which are factual and with citations. I believe I was just adding to the encyclopedia and not promoting anything with any of my edits. And in regards to some of the questions/statements above, I am an individual and the account contains my name and I am not getting nor am I expecting anything in return for any edits to this page. I thought I was really just supplying an updated picture which I thought would be helpful, while I understand the debate an the back and forth, I did not expect the issue to get this big where I had to verify my identity, intentions, and integrity. Wayomui (talk) 05:28, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't recall ever questioning your intentions or integrity. Aside from the issue of whether you were Nguyen or a representative of his, I mentioned that in passing, and only in relation to the WP:OWN policy. This was not intended as any attack upon your integrity, but it is important to note that article subjects do not own their own Wikipedia article, nor do they get to exert unilateral control over them, as on Amazon or Comixology or IMDB, etc. As I stated on in the discussion on the article talk page, I prefer to talk a middle ground on such matters, neither dismissing article subjects' concerns (as I've seen some editors express), nor allowing them to unilaterally control their articles, but working with them when they have legitimate concerns. ;-) Nightscream (talk) 05:22, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Nightscream: No worries, as I wasn't really referring to you as much as the response to the boilerplate welcome above. As for the image, I just assumed updating to a newer one that conventions use would be better, but am open to the dialogue that is going on with it. But my response really is to the verifying who I am, and my intentions mentioned in the boilerplate because of my edits, as my edit history (minus the image back and forth) shows that I was putting factual information and including citations and not acting as an agent for promoting the person. Wayomui (talk) 05:28, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks. Nightscream (talk) 15:22, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wayomui. You are focusing exclusively on the promotional concern above and not at all on the conflict of interest concern. Since you are editing in conjunction with the subject of the article itself, it means your editing of this article does have a conflict of interest. It is beneficial for all reading and editing the article to know that. The COISELF guild-line states,
If you have a personal connection to a topic or person, you are advised to refrain from editing those articles directly and to provide full disclosure of the connection if you comment about the article on talk pages or in other discussions.
As for "promotional", please note that the word does not mean you must be a professional getting paid. Knowing a person can bias your editing and a friend/acquaintance editing for a person's article could still be considering promoting that person, especially when done with feedback from the subject. That's why it's important to disclose COI edits to prevent such confusion. I recommend that you suggest changes on the talk page as suggested by the guideline.
If you have not, please additionally read Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons to familiarize yourself with some of our policies on editing on living persons. Jason Quinn (talk) 03:50, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jason Quinn: Thanks for explaining, but I don't believe I was editing the page in conjunction with the subject, but yes I do know him. If you say there is a conflict of interest I'll stop editing. As mentioned before, I thought I was just helping make things more accurate and current but instead this has been a bigger time spend than necessary and I will stop contributing as a whole. Wayomui (talk) 04:07, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
That's not the avenue we'd wish you would take but it's completely your choice. We'd prefer you stay but you have to understand that we are here to collaboratively build an encyclopedia and that involves dialogue and discussion. If you are here to build an encyclopedia, you will find editing on other articles to be less problematic. Jason Quinn (talk) 06:21, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
