SFnet Coffee House Network

edit

Wayne and Jill Gregori were both born and raised in the East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area) they started their family in San Francisco's Noe Valley district where they supported the idea community by creating the nation's first public access computer network called SFnet Coffee House Network (archive) (1991). The completed network consisted of 25 coin operated, public access computers installed in Bay Area coffee houses. SFnet was a ground breaking idea in a number of ways; First, it brought computer technology to local public venues that served a less affluent urban population that had little or no access to technology. Second, those individuals who owned home computers or had access to them at work were able to connect with cafe goers via simple communications technology (modem and Bulletin Board System technology) creating a vibrant and diverse local community. Although SFnet is widely seen as the start of the Internet cafe phenomenon it was more about community building than providing access to technology. The idea was a tremendous social success, allowing thousands of Bay Area residents the opportunity to come together, not only to converse in a new and exciting electronic forum, but to follow-up these cyber meetings with face-to-face get togethers, called Net-Gets, at local coffee houses.

Although throughout the early 90's Wayne and Jill were able to support their growing family on the income provided by the public access terminals and home subscribership, they were unable to transition the network to the, then new, World Wide Web. In 1997 Wayne and Jill pulled the plug (literally) on SFnet and moved on to other endeavors, but the supercharged community experience that was SFnet kept them both engaged in looking for other ways to grow and support their communities.

OpenFence.net revives the spirit of SFnet by creating a system that provides neighborhood organizations the technology tools to organize and energize their communities. --Waynegregori (talk) 19:21, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
