The subject of this article was a playwright, whose work was noticed by Max Beebohm and the theatre critic of the New York Times. He is an interesting example of how the increasing wealth of some Quaker families in the 19th C moved them away from the original principles of the movement and into the County squirarchy.

What brought S.M. Fox his wealth? Did he inherit much from his stockbroker father? Was his an advantageous marriage to "old" Cumberland landed Gentry? How did he come to inherit his father-in-law's Cumbrian palace, Fawe Park, designed by Alfred Waterhouse?
