Hi there. I just thought I'd explain what's going on with Dar Williams, since nobody else looks to have tried.

Wikipedia has recently adopted a policy of using free images whenever possible, even at the expense of perfectly legal uses of copyrighted images. It doesn't matter that Dar Williams may want a better picture. It doesn't matter that you own the copyright, and are putting the image here yourself. So long as a copyright on the image exists, they won't use it (except in certain cases not applicable here).

I personally think the policy is extreme and just plain dumb, but apparently some of the more hardcore wikipedians had a vote a while back, and this is the result. If you want to add a replacement image that'll stick, you're going have to release your rights to it, and put it under a free content license or under public domain.

It sucks, but that's how things work now.--Pushsense 17:55, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've reconsidered and removed the image from the article for now. This does not mean other editors won't put it back, and I'd rather see another, better photo under a free license rather than no photo on the page. Please consider offering a free image of her for the article (and preferably one that shows her face better than the Sheehan image that has been uploaded). edit

I have reverted your last edit. There does not appear to be an image at Image:Dar Thumbs Up.jpg, so I've restored the previous one. -MrFizyx 20:25, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:Dar thumbs up.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Martinp23 21:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
One other thing, if you could, please add a note to the image page regarding the source. You might post something like, "Image provided by Velour Music, management for Dar Williams." (I assume that accurately describes you). Thanks, -MrFizyx 21:21, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
