Edits over at Geisha edit
Hiya - just thought I'd pop in to say. I get that the link I'd previously written as "sex workers" goes to prostitution, and I understand your point about the text being consistent.
However, though there's never been a consensus discussion about the issue on Wikipedia itself, I'm quite mindful of the fact that a fair few sex work activists, charities and outreach programmes pretty pointedly use the term "sex worker" over "prostitute", as a more neutral description of a person's job and industry, as the term "prostitute" has some pretty heavy implications for a person's morality and also pretty much doubles as an insult. (You can kinda see how "you're a sex worker!" doesn't hold nearly the same impact as ""you're a prostitute!". One is a description; the other is linked to longstanding connotations of low morality and a general degradation of character.)
Seeing as we try and present a morally neutral angle at Wikipedia, I'd say that "sex worker" is the far better option. It's not always possible to avoid using "prostitute", but where it's unnecessary to use, it's better to ask ourselves what language we're using and the implications of it. Geisha and sex work are also a very touchy subject; it's generally better to keep to the most neutral language possible, as it soon turns into a bit of a prodded hornet's nest if one isn't careful.
Obviously, since there's no consensus for it, I can't exactly strongarm you into keeping it as it was. However, I would strongly advise you to revert your edit back to "sex worker". As someone who's studied geisha as a subject for a number of years relatively closely, and as someone with close friends who are sex workers, I'd very much appreciate your cooperation on this issue.
