  • Please sign your messages on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically insert your "signature" (your username and a date stamp). The   button, on the tool bar above Wikipedia's text editing window, also does this.
  • If you would like to play around with your new Wiki skills without changing the mainspace, the Sandbox is for you.
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Sign your messages, be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. If you need any other help, leave me a message on my talk page.

Shortened footnotes edit

Hi, here is the page I was looking for: Help:Shortened footnotes. --Jaqen (talk) 12:48, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!! I had a look at it but I feel it is not quite what I was after, so I have decided to just cite the entire chapter.
I was hoping for something where for each citation one could specify specific pages and that when it comes to compiling the final reflist Wikipedia would just concatenate all pages cited across all instances of a given source. For example:
(I was not sure how to make something plain text only so "_" are supposed to be "<" or ">" and "(" & ")" are supposed to be "{" and "}" respectively)
I like apples _ref name="xyz"_((Cite Q | Q112793147 | pages=100))_/ref_
I like pears _ref name="xyz"_((Cite Q | QQ112793147 | pages=200))_/ref_
So when it comes to building the reflist it would compile something like:
Ronald DiPippo (2016). Geothermal Power Plants: Principles, Applications, Case Studies and Environmental Impact (4th ed.). Butterworth-Heinemann. pp. 100,200. ISBN 978-0-08-100879-9. Wikidata Q112793147.
As opposed to
Ronald DiPippo (2016). Geothermal Power Plants: Principles, Applications, Case Studies and Environmental Impact (4th ed.). Butterworth-Heinemann. pp. 100. ISBN 978-0-08-100879-9. Wikidata Q112793147.

Hope that is clear --Tmerbex92 (talk) 13:30, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
To show wiki markup as normal text you can use the nowiki tag.
Unfortunately as far as I know there is no way for the reference list to be compiled automatically by the software.
Please remember that other users do not receive a notification when you answer them in your user talk unless you use Template:Reply to. --Jaqen (talk) 13:35, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jaqen: Thanks for the pointer about the nowiki tag. I hope I am replying correctly this time round Tmerbex92 (talk) 13:48, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
