Create Stubs

As you are new to wikipedia, you might not be aware of this, but if you create a article is short, then it could be deleted. In order to prevent it from deletion, try making a STUB of the article. If you will keep a Stub template in the bottom of the page, then it will not be deleted. How to make a stub is stated Here. And if you need any further help, I m ready to help you and feel free to ask for any guidance to me. Thank You. --Yasht101 (talk) 10:39, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Yasht101 isn't entirely correct, I'm afraid - adding a {{stub}} template doesn't act as an anti-deletion tool. Stub tags work by alerting the relevent Wikiprojects to the existence of a short article in need of expansion; nevertheless all the usual rules regarding notability and appropriateness apply. At best, stub tagging a new article might encourage editors to perform a proper check for sources before proposing it for deletion, but it's not a magic aegis against the deletionists. Yunshui  09:55, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
I know that but if the article which is very small can be prevented from being tagged under a1 by some new patroller. But the fact is it does make a difference and the subject should also be important enough to be added to wikipedia. Anyways new page patrollers can take care of it if violation of rules occur due to stubs!! Yasht101 14:17, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I see what you're saying, but if there's enough information in a new article to make a stub, then there's enough to avoid an A1 deletion anyway (and vice versa: if there's not enough text to pass A1, there's not enough to make a stub, either). To be precise, a stub must contain "adequate context", as opposed to the "insufficient context" necessary for speedy deletion. Thus, it's the content of a new article, rather than the tagging, which determines whether or not it's kept. Yunshui  14:25, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah! Exactly. I'd emaild him\her everything in detail regarding it. And i think you didnt read that i'd written that a "NEW PATROLLER" not "NEW PAGE PATROLLER". Thanks! Yasht101 14:27, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
It's good to see you helping out new editors. I was just concerned over your statement: "In order to prevent it from deletion, try making a STUB of the article. If you will keep a Stub template in the bottom of the page, then it will not be deleted." To a new editor, that could easily be misconstrued as: "You can create a two-sentence article about a bit of toast that you found in your hair this morning, and it will live forever on Wikipedia as long as you tag it as a stub." You see how that could cause more problems than it solves... Yunshui  14:35, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
The realy story is that;
I was a 'New New-page-patroller'. I didnt had much knowledge about how to use CSD tags.
That user had made a article about a Senete member in Washington DC. And i tagged it under a1. He had made a article about a important person n was tagged due to my ignorance. Inorder to see that it dosent happen again, I told him/her that.
I just didnt told him/her but I felt that he/she is a geneuine editor. He/She was willing to improve. You can make it out by looking here n here. I thought that he was responsible enough to not to missuse it.
This was the only reason why I suggested him that.
N i was new at that time, didnt had proper knowledge n understanding of wikipedia.
BTW i think that u got there (talk page of Athleek123) as he was offering adoption cuz ur only adopted user prolly retired from wikipedia ! ;)

I thought so too - turns out she just hadn't edited in a while. Guess I jumped the gun on that one! Yunshui  08:32, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Adoption

Hi, if you are still interested in being adopted, just give me a call on my talk page :) Peace x Kinkreet~♥moshi moshi♥~ 02:52, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

That's great! First I need to know JUST A LITTLE about you, such as what you have already done on Wikipedia and what kind of thing do you want to learn? - I see you have created your first article already, that's good. Basically, if you want to tell me what you want to learn I can give you short tasks you can do (I will guide you through them (: ). Also, any questions, just give me a message, I check WP at least once every day. Peace x Kinkreet~♥moshi moshi♥~ 23:43, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Philip Down

You cannot PROD it because the editor uses source inplace of references.

You can have {{subst:prod blp}} when there in no third party source to vrify the content. In short, if the article has any link to reliable source, then you cannot PROD it.

For any questions, feel free to ask me. I am here to help. Thank you and Happy editing! Yasht101 :) 08:28, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

got it! Athleek123 (talk) 22:29, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Its okay Athleek123. You are atleast not violating any policices. You will not belive but I was warned twice in January 2012, 2 months ago to be blocked as I was a very bad new commer, but I learned from my mistakes and now I warn other users who violate rules. You are on the right track but just u need is a little more understanding of things in Wikipedia. All the best for your WikiJurney! Yasht101 :) 23:06, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Tagging Articles

It is good to see your energy in tagging pages and especially mine.

There are few facts that you dont know which I might like to make clear:

  1. LINKROT - it is used when there are no <ref and </ref> tags on pages. Even if URL is there between <ref and </ref>, e.g., <ref>google.com</ref> then it is not LINKROT. LINKROT means there are no <ref and </ref> and the user adds links to reference section. For e.g., [www.google.com]. This is LINKROT.
  2. ONE SOURCE - this means that a article largely depends upon one website. If there is only one line in the article and one reference is used, then this does not apply, because one reference is enough for one line. When there are more then 5 lines and only one reference, then it is ONE SOURCE not when there is only one line.
  3. UNREFERENCED - in a case when author does not add any <ref and </ref> or there is no source on article to verify the subject a little, then UNREFERENCED is used. If there is 'External Links' section on the article from which the sub can be verified, then UNREFERENCED cannot be used.

You are doing really good work to see that the pages are proper and that your edit count keeps on increasing. But take care a little. I just informed you before you make any further mistakes. Keep up the good work but with caution. Happy editing! Yasht101 :) 07:01, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Ah ok, just one question then: what do I tag it as if there are external links but no references. And it was coincidential that I ended up working on your pages, I was just going through the new pages! Athleek123 (talk) 07:07, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
You should use {{nofootnotes}} in that cases. I hope that I was helpful. I saw that u were offering adoption. If you are available, then can I adopt you? I spend most of my time in helping new comers now Yasht101 :) 08:41, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I have already been adopted by kinkreet, thanks though. Plus I'm a hair older than you :PP Athleek123 (talk) 01:08, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I am sorry for that as I didnt see the editor's name in ur userpage. Yasht101 :) 01:11, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
It's cool I need to update my userboxes anyways Athleek123 (talk) 01:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

One note: Yash is wrong about two of the points above. On #1, just because a person uses ref tags does not mean that LINKROT does not apply--per the template docs, "A bare URL is a link to a website with no identifying information except the link itself." Any time there is a link without a title, or author, or publisher, or at least something to identify what it's supposed to be linking to, the linkrot template apples. Second, just having an external link is not enough to qualify for "unreferenced". If, for example, someone makes a page about themselves, or a company, or a band, and the only thing that is provided is a link to that person/org/band's website, SNS, etc., then that is still an unreferenced article. However, Yasht would be correct that if a page has newspaper articles or other reliable sources, but their put in an EL section, then nofootnotes would be the right tag. Yasht, I'm not sure where you're getting your info from, but it's best to check the template's documentation before giving advice like that. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:18, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

I have checked Bare URLs twice. There is no e.g., that if <ref>google.com</ref> is used then it is linkrot. Yasht101 :) 11:53, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Please look at Template:Linkrot. It clearly states that any time a link is included in an article that does not have any other identifying information, then the tag is appropriate. The whole point behind the tag is that webpages change and get taken offline. Without other identifying information (author, publisher, page owner, etc.), it's becomes impossible to track down the original contents. Thus, the "links" can "rot". Qwyrxian (talk) 12:44, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh. I m so sorry. I had no clue why it is used. And wrote as i didnt saw any example. Again, my apologies :)

Removing AfD template

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Philadelphia Fever (WPSL). Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. This is an automated message from a bot about this edit, where you removed the deletion template from an article before the deletion discussion was complete. If this message is in error, please report it. Snotbot  t • c »  07:03, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

202.62.116.225

You just reported User:202.62.116.225 for vandalism to WP:AIV. Could you please point out any edits of theirs in the last month that are vandalism? I don't even think the ones they were warned for were vandalism. Sure, many of them are unsourced or malformatted, but this does not meet the definition in WP:VANDAL. Am I just missing something? Qwyrxian (talk) 11:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

No, you are right. I saw the repeated offenses and assumed that they were actually cases of vandalism. Sorry about that, Athleek123 (talk) 05:48, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Phrases as wikilink text

Re: Cacouna, Quebec (Indian reserve): There is no prohibition in Wikipedia against having a phrase as the target of a wikilink, where appropriate. See for instance Wikipedia:Piped link, where an example of this is given (see the part after "It will occasionally be useful to link to a fuller explanation of a phrase...").

The general guideline is simply that the link should be intuitive, that is, the reader should not be surprised by the result when they click on a link, as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#Piped links. -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 15:15, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Ah, I did not know that. Thanks for teaching me something new! Athleek123 (talk) 05:48, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Yi Byeok article

I wrote that article word by word, using multiple authoritative sources in French, English and Korean. I am a British-born professor of English literature and a professional translator from Korean. I cannot understand why you would think that this article (part of a longer paper due to be published in an academic journal) was a machine translation from Korean and I have therefore removed the comment as deeply insulting. I do not think that it needs stylistic revision, either, but anyone who sees problems is welcome to improve it. Perhaps my keenness to indicate the Chinese characters for names and titles misled you? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ansonjae (talkcontribs) 01:51, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Dear Athleek123, it wasnt rought translation. If you ignore those few 15 words in koreon language, then you will find out that the article is fine enough. So rough translation was little rough in that.
And, User:Ansonjae, dont take it as a insult, Athleek is a newbie like you. One thing I wanted to tell you that there are too many Koreon words in the article. It does not create any problem but still it looks odd as this is english wikipedia. Anyways, the article is written in a good way. Yasht101 :) 02:11, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
I am so sorry to have offended you, please do not be offended. I was patrolling new pages and clearly was going rather quickly. Again, sorry. Athleek123 (talk) 05:48, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
It wasnt entirely your fault, even if i was patrolling new pages 1 month ago and if would have seen that page, then even I would have tagged it as 'rought translation' Yasht101 :) 05:50, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks to you both. You are kind. I quite understand what you say about the Chinese characters (not Korean language) being off-putting. It depends what level of information is good in Wikipedia. Without the characters the information is incomplete and I was certainly writing from an academic perspective. I'll keep what you say in mind.Ansonjae (talk) 02:41, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Capitalization Tag

Hi there. I noticed you tagged a handful of articles with capitalization tags a couple days ago. I reviewed all of the tagged articles, and didn't notice any problems with the capitalization. I was just wondering what your reasoning was for adding them. Thanks. Torchiest talkedits 21:21, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Would you mind pointing out which articles? Thanks, Athleek123 (talk) 22:59, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Nevermind, they're all in my watchlist. Duh. One moment I'll look through them Athleek123 (talk) 23:45, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Here's a list of reasons
William Anthony Farone - "anti-tobacco expert" should be capitalized
Hong Kong women's national rugby union team (sevens) - title needs caps
2012–13 Missouri Tigers men's basketball team - title needs caps
Orange (Dark Suns album) - Types of instruments under "credits" need caps
How God Made the English - before you fixed it up "air date" needed caps

Okay, thanks for that list. A couple things:

  1. If there are only a few small changes like that, you can just go ahead and correct them directly instead of tagging the article. Normally, tags like that would only be used if there is a large number of corrections needed, such that the article would need a careful reading to find them all.
  2. Some of those items don't actually need to be capitalized. I know it seems odd, but a lot things you might thing needs caps usually don't on Wikipedia. A good example of that is section headings. Normally, only the first word is capitalized. I had a lot of trouble with that myself when I started editing here, and in fact, you'll note that I capitalized both words in the title of this section. Old habits die hard, lol.
But looking at those items specifically:
Anti-tobacco expert isn't an official title or position. If he were something like "Anti-Tobacco Secretary of California" then it would be capitalized. It's like the difference between president and President of the United States. One is generic, one is specific.
Instruments don't get capitalized, even if they're after dashes like that.
Sports teams only get the particular location and team name capitalized. So the Missouri Tigers is all that needs to be capitalized. for the basketball team article. You can see that the main article, Missouri Tigers men's basketball, only capitalizes the state and team name. It's titled that way to distinguish it from the entire Missouri Tigers athletic program article. You'd only need to capitalize Hong Kong for the rugby union sevens team, for similar reasons.
Air date wouldn't need to be capitalized, again, even though it was after a dash like that. For a table heading, like how I reorganized it, capitalizing the first word is correct.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to work on articles, and hopefully this information will help you going forward! Torchiest talkedits 01:52, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, ok. That all makes sense, thanks for teaching me new things! Athleek123 (talk) 18:07, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
