Participatory Democracy Article Draft

edit

The definition of participatory democracy is “a form of government in which the citizens themselves have the opportunity to make decisions about public policy” as stated by Mark Bevir. The use of voting on the polls is an example of how the public gets involved within their community but many questions what the other forms of participatory democracy are and if they even work. Citizens in urban communities say that there is a “lack of definition of political participation beyond elections” as printed in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. The basis of this is confusion between things like protests where citizens have the right to rally and vocalize a change they want to happen and attending a local town hall meeting with their city councilors and representatives. The New York Times put out an opinion-based article question asking the community to convey what participatory democracy means to them. Eltan Hersh wrote in mainly discussing how people should be involved not only in rallies and voting, but within their local democracies and voting not only in their primaries. He stated, “Not all activism is political hobbyism.” Thatmoviedude (talk) 16:38, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Moustapha BensalahReply
