Big Important Message for Admins: edit

If the bot goes wonky and you need to block can you be sure to ensure that an autoblock is NOT applied. This server also runs Tawkerbot2 - the anti vandalism bot and blocking it might have some issues.

Big Important Message: Read before posting edit

Tawkerbot is a bot an automated computer program. It does not reply to messages, it's owner does, Please leave comments on its owner Tawker's page. Thanks

You need to check this page, too, if you're going to run a bot. If you're not going to check it, redirect it to your user talk. — Omegatron 23:35, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I check this page too, its on my watchlist/homepage in firefox, my main one is just more obvious with the new messages box and comes up mid browsing Tawker 07:42, 27 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please don't replace quoted text. edit

Hi Tawkerbot / operator thereof. This is about this change. This was quoted text. I think it should not be a candidate for replacement. Cheers, Netizen 00:00, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it should definitely not be subst'ing things inside nowiki tags. I've blocked it temporarily. — Omegatron 15:43, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please don't substituted Template:unsigned edit

Is there a good reason to substitute this? The "server load" template problem isn't a good reason, according to our lead developer, so this substituting is just cluttering up pages unnecessarily.

Subst'ing templates like that clutters up the wikitext and makes it a lot more difficult to read, especially for the less-technically-inclined. It also removes the updatability of templates, which is important for things with complex HTML that might need to be tweaked to fix problems, etc.

Lead developer Brion VIBBER has said that he sees no evidence of a template-related server load problem, and that we shouldn't worry about server load and templates at a policy level. I'd say the systemic bias cost of substituting these templates is significantly worse than anything it solves.

Also, could you substitute {User:Omegatron/sig} for me? ;-) — Omegatron 15:38, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've taken care of those -- ( drini's page ) 06:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, and per WP:SUBST, it is under debate, and until such a debate is resolved by reasonably concensus, it will just create strife. --Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 15:57, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well I put it there.  :-) But yeah, it needs to be talked about. As do any others that are substituted purely for server load reasons. — Omegatron 16:02, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I just want to say thanks to Oni Ookami Alfador for blocking the bot for a couple hours (I think it's unblocked now, I was planning on starting another requested run with consensus, I'll double check that I don't start running jobs that people on IRC request without re on welcome which is clearly on the list in the right section :) I'll give the server admin password to another user who can stop it if it goes rogue again, the bot runs on a a server in a data center and my local ISP went down the right after I read the message to stop the bot, hence I didn't have the capability to stop it. Sorry about that. Tawker 00:02, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm I've been substing manually lots of "unsigned" and "user". Templates on talk pages should always be substed. -- ( drini's page ) 03:04, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
...because? — Omegatron 10:00, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
In particular, substing thhe unsigned template doens't clutter up text, (or would you claim the ~~ ~~ turning into full username plus date plus whatever people put on their signature is cluttering up. -- ( drini's page ) 03:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
 • Omegatron
 • <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Omegatron (talk • contribs) {}.</small><!--Inserted with Template:Unsigned-->
Which is more cluttered? — Omegatron 10:03, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
This is somewhat irrelevant, but that's nothing compared to what some people use for their over 2 lines fancy signatures... -- WB 10:49, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
And I'm even going further claiming that [1] instance was right (indeed bot shouldn't subst text within nowiki tags, but that specific one was, since it makes people be aware of the subst: bit and so eventually the supposed "systemic bias" claimed above will diminish. -- ( drini's page ) 03:09, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just to clarify, I dont think it was me that did any blocking. My account does not have any administrator priveliges, and I dont think I mentioned it to anyone outside of this page or the template page. So, if my account is on record for the block it should probably be looked into as some sort of technical error perhaps.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 07:04, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

To clear things even further, Omegatron blocked the bot twice until Essjay unblocked after the bot regained its control. -- WB 07:39, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I blocked it for 15 minutes first, then read Wikipedia:Blocking_policy#Bots and updated it. — Omegatron 10:03, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
And then I got it under control, thanks Omegatron for stopping it, and asked Essjay to unblock as I was testing a new version of the code and it's kind of hard to do when the bots blocked, it seems to be running ok now. :) -- Tawker 05:24, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I support The substing of this template per WP:SUBST#Misc. templates and the Talk page Clearly tells us to Subset it. It is much better for it to be substed than for it to be Protected [2]--E-Bod 04:35, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welcome edit

I have welcomed several new users with welcome. What should I use instead? (the bot keeps replacing them). Thanks, --Rockero420 20:25, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

subst'ing test msgs edit

Hi. Are we to stop using test. spam, etc.? If not, what is the point of having the templates if someone has to go over each and every one; i.e. if it's made clear that the contents of the template are to be copy-pasted — but isn't that the point, that they save time? Regards, El_C 11:19, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello Bot! edit

Hi there Mr Bot. Thanks for leaving me messages and making me think someone loves me. Shogun 23:13, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Don't remove useful information from anon talk pages edit

The tawkerbot is removing useful information from anonymous talk pages, such as the sharedip template: [3]. This is extremely frustrating as that information is very useful and editors spent time putting the template there. Where is the discussion that authorized this behavior from this bot? --DDG 17:32, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

See talk page for reply, I've put it up on the Village Pump for additional discussion, we'll see what happens there, I really don't know where else to put it, the feedback I got (to blank) was the only feedback I got. If there's no more comments after a week or so, I'm going to work on a list of every template that should stay on the page and start running it if its ok with you. -- Tawker 23:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have to agree with this sentiment not to remove it. Ardenn 23:50, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
And hence the bot has been pretty silent, Tawkerbot (1) hasn't gotten much use as of late, if anyone has a better proposal for the above task (it used to be a speedy) I'm happy to hear it :o -- Tawker 01:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Automated message to bot owners edit

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 05:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
