Help Request for a more experienced Wikipedian edit

I, along with several other users, have serious concerns about the article "Sophism" (see this article's Talk page), and about the fact that numerous other Wikipedia pages with links to "sophist" are unnecessarily redirected to "sophism." The first step to fixing these problems is to remove the unnecessary redirect of "sophist" to "sophism," which another user requested long ago. As a relatively new user, I have been looking at various help pages, but am unsure of how to proceed. If someone with more experience can give me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it.TJLaw (talk) 21:30, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here's the link to the redirect itself: [1] I think miscellany for deletion might be helpful here. --I dream of horses @ 22:29, 30 September 2012 (UTC
Thank you. I am not yet sure that deleting the article on "sophism" is required, but eliminating the redirect is a step toward figuring that out.TJLaw (talk) 23:07, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I was thinking you deleted the redirect, not the article itself. --I dream of horses @ 23:43, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, I intended to eliminate the redirect, and then proceed with editing the article "sophist"; however, a previous user transferred all of the "sophist" article's content into "sophism" before installing the redirect, so when I removed it, the article "sophist" was left blank, and I was (rightly) chided by another user for creating a blank page. So it looks like I will need to revert to an earlier version of "sophist", or produce a very substantial edit of my own before trying to remove the revert again. But yes, you're right, I was more immediately concerned with getting rid of the redirect than with eliminating the "sophism" article.TJLaw (talk) 23:55, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Maybe you can put the "sophist" information back where the redirect is. I dream of horses @ 00:10, 1 October 2012 (UTC) (corrected {{unindent}} at 00:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC))Reply

That's actually a great idea. If no one responds to the comments I've put on the talk page for the "sophist" article, I think I will move certain sections that are in "sophism" back to "sophist" as a basis for new edits, since that's basically like doing a revert anyway. Thanks again for the suggestion.TJLaw (talk) 00:28, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
No problem! You seem very interested in improving Wikipedia. Ask me questions anytime. I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 00:31, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi TJ, since Sophism has been where folks have had to link for sophists for a while, please don't forget to clean up the links once you're done splitting out content and creating this Sophist article. That is, you're going to want to double check all the links to Sophism and decide whether sophism or sophist is meant to be linked. You can see all the links by going to Sophism and expanding the Toolbox menu (to the left of the article, below the Wikipedia logo) and then click "What links here". On the "Pages that link to "Sophism"" page you can select the "(Article)" namespace next to the "Go" button. (You only need to check links in articles.) If you already know all this, sorry to bore, but it will save a lot of headaches if you do this cleanup once you've got Sophist up and running.  davidiad.:τ 01:58, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, cleaning up these links was one of my primary purposes in sorting out the mixup between these two articles. I did not know about the toolbox function, though; that will make things much easier. Thanks!TJLaw (talk) 02:07, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Glad to help. It looks like a couple of templates are intended to point toward Sophism and they account for hundreds of the links, so there probably isn't too too much cleanup to do. Happy link hunting!  davidiad.:τ 03:02, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

September 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not replace pages with blank content, as you did with this edit to Sophist, as this is confusing to readers. The page's content has been restored for now. If there is a problem with the page, it should be edited or reverted to a previous version if possible; if you think the page should be removed entirely, see further information. Thank you. My apologies. I will try reverting it to an earlier version, and use that version as the basis for future editing.TJLaw (talk) 23:15, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
