Citation Hunt in Finnish edit

Hey, a nice tool indeed! Is it possible to add Finnish Wikipedia (fi.wikipedia) there? I've just created a guide "how to add references using visual editor" and a link to this tool would be a nice addition to the guide. It's already translated in Finnish by another users. Regards, --Stryn (talk) 19:51, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Stryn! If all strings for the interface have already been translated on TranslateWiki, the next step is to write some configuration for Citation Hunt. This is pretty easy, but it's a more technical step and requires navigating the code a little. You can try it yourself if you're comfortable with that, or leave it to me :)
In any case, we'll need the following information about the Finnish Wikipedia:
* A link to your guide on adding citations, since we'll also link to it from the tool
* If there's a policy on omitting citations in the lead section (like WP:CITELEAD for English), a link to that policy
* The names of templates that Citation Hunt should look for.
So, if you're interested in trying the technical bits yourself, please file an issue on GitHub with that information, and I'll be happy to help you there.
Here's an example pull request for Norwegian, if you want to give that a try: https://github.com/eggpi/citationhunt/pull/57. I'm working on automating some of that, but unfortunately we're not quite there yet.
Otherwise, feel free to just reply here and I'll get to it in a few weeks (there are a couple of languages that I need to do first). Thanks! -- Surlycyborg
Thanks for your fast answer! So the information you wanted are:
Well looks like the hardest part is installing and learning to use Github, but let's see if I can do any progress during these few weeks. --Stryn (talk) 22:16, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Help page for citation Hunt edit

Hi, it seems the link to help page is no more on the menu of CH. We really need it in Ukrainian version. Can I add it by myself or can you help? Help page (Довідка in Ukranian) to be linked--Anntinomy (talk) 21:06, 11 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Anntinomy: You're right, I began to think about this removal back in February 2019 and actually did in in August. I don't mind re-adding it, though to keep things sane on small screens I'm thinking of putting it in a less prominent place. For example, one idea would be to group the links in the top right (Customize, Leaderboard, the language selection dropdown) into a hamburguer menu, and then put a Help link in there too. Do you have any particular objections to that? -- User:Surlycyborg (talk) 21:49, 11 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hiding in hamburger does not sound great to me at the moment but it is all the matter of practicing I suppose. Will look for help link return! Ready to participate in user testing :) --Anntinomy (talk) 18:12, 12 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
The other alternative I can think of (which doesn't add more text) is to link in the existing text of the main page. So, for enwiki, we'd have something like "Click I got this! to go to Wikipedia and fix the snippet, or Next! to see another one. Good luck!", where the bold part links to the help article. That's actually simpler than introducing the menu (which I still kind of want to do, but these could be separate things), so I'll go with that. If you want to help, someone will need to update the translation in TranslateWiki in a couple of days, please :) https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:CitationHunt -- User:Surlycyborg (talk) 19:12, 12 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Citation Hunt broken in several languages edit

Hi! Trying to use this phenomenal tool today, I realised it was broken in Swedish. Tried a few other versions as well, noticed that at least Catalan, Latvian and French are broken too. I only get the "Internal Error - Sorry :(" message - do you happen to know what's broken? /Josefine Hellroth Larsson (WMSE) (talk) 12:23, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Josefine Hellroth Larsson (WMSE): Hey, thanks for reporting. I believe it's fixed now, can you please try again? -- User:Surlycyborg (talk) 13:48, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yaay, it sure does! Thanks! Josefine Hellroth Larsson (WMSE) (talk) 15:38, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

CitationHunt pull request in Basque language edit

Hello! I know that making things in a hurry is not the best thing, but we are working with some librarians to start the #1lib1ref campaign soon and I have translated everything for Basque language at CitationHunt. Would it be possible to know if everything is ready so I can show it to them? Thanks! -Theklan (talk) 15:56, 3 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey sure, happy to help! Let's follow up on https://github.com/eggpi/citationhunt/pull/171 please. -- User:Surlycyborg (talk) 16:35, 3 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you! edit

Citation Hunt is such a lovely tool! Thank you for your work maintaining it. QuietCicada (talk) 14:54, 22 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much QuietCicada, I'm glad you enjoy it! -- User:Surlycyborg (talk)
You're welcome! I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but Annie Rauwerda (the person behind Depths of Wikipedia) recommended Citation Hunt on her personal Substack newsletter! Citation Hunt encouraged me to start editing, and I still use it frequently. :) QuietCicada (talk) 00:30, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's lovely, and no I didn't know about it! I'll see if I can find a contact to write Annie a thank-you note. Unfortunately I see the newsletter is inaccurate on the authorship of the tool. I wrote Citation Hunt, and I don't think I even know the "Hay" person credited there. But still, I appreciate the shout-out! -- User:Surlycyborg (talk)
