  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

  Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

A barnstar for you!

  The Surreal Barnstar
Thank you for your recent contributions. And nice catch here! Is there a page where you can see this live and know if there's a contradiction? Cheers, MX () 17:13, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
@MX: Cheers! I just saw the edits pop up in recent changes and looked through the changes you'd made, and noticed you'd not removed the living people category. I have considered creating a database query to report the pages in both a death category and living people, but I've not got around to it yet. stwalkerster (talk) 17:18, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Great! Hope you like the barnstar. Saw that you didn't have it in your collection. Well deserved! MX () 17:20, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Not really sure how this works, but trying to update an article

My Uncle sadly passed away yesterday, thought it would be prudent to add the date to his page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._Rogerson

I think the changes have been reversed, and I understand why (unsourced), but I don't know how best to go about getting this updated and edited - any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance for your help - I hope this ends up in the right place — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.125.226.2 (talk) 12:31, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi there - firstly, my condolences for your recent loss.
We have a policy on Wikipedia to cite any facts which are reported to a reliable source (a publication with editorial oversight such as a newspaper), allowing readers to verify for themselves what is written. While this is always important, it is even more important when dealing with biographies of living (or recently deceased) people - we even have a special policy for it. This helps ensure that any material which is potentially damaging to someone is backed up by a publication which has a reputation for fact checking and editorial oversight; meaning people can't make up untrue information about someone.
While I understand that this can be frustrating (especially so as a family member), please try to think of it the other way around - a new (or unregistered) user changed the article to report a family member or close friend of yours was dead, when they were actually alive - it would probably be even more upsetting, especially if other people saw the article and took action such as publishing obituaries or sending condolence cards for someone who is still alive.
If you would like to restore the edit, and you have something from which other people can verify themselves (such as a newspaper obituary), then please go ahead and re-add it with the citation. stwalkerster (talk) 12:35, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello again - the obituary has now been published as can be seen here: http://announcements.johnstonpress.co.uk/obituaries/thestar-uk/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=190236749

Would you be able to help me add the right date and cite properly? Thank you for all your help.  — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.125.226.2 (talk) 15:37, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

I've updated the article with the obituary, thanks! stwalkerster (talk) 18:17, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
