Potential vandalism

Hi. I found you on my talkpage (from a while back) trying to find an admin. There seems to be a vandal vandalizing Natan Slifkin, but as a nonadmin, I have no protection rights and as a contributor to the article in question, I'd like to avoid a potential conflict of interest. The contributor in question, User:Estherneiman seems to be a dedicated account for making a particular group of edits to this article, and had been warned in the past. I also didn't want to misuse rollback rights, seeing how I've edited the page before. Thanx! DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 03:30, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

User:Josephsickler‎

Please take a look at the user's contribs. I think this is a case of vandalism-only and WP:MYSPACE. Since the only edits have been to his userspace and vandalism to other accounts. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:18, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Blocked - thanks for the heads-up [stwalkerster|talk] 22:20, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, no problem. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:24, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Creating accounts for students

Hi, Stwalkerster. Thanks for your help and clarity. I just followed the link you suggested on my page and, even while logged in, I cannot create the account from my school IP, since it has blocked account creation.

It says:

"Account creation from this IP address (206.211.69.253) has been temporarily restricted. This is probably due to persistent vandalism from the IP address you are editing from, which may be shared by many people if you are connected to the Internet via a proxy server (used by most schools and corporations and some Internet service providers) or dial-up access.

To enquire about the block or request that an account be created for you, please send an e-mail to unblock-en-llists.wikimedia.org with details of your IP address, the administrator who blocked you and the reason they gave (this information is available below). If you are requesting an account, please include in your e-mail the account name you wish. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to any innocent users.

Information about the block: account creation from this IP address (206.211.69.253) was blocked by Toddst1, who gave the reason {schoolblock}."

So... do I request the block to be loosened in some way? Or go back to the ACC? Thanks, thanks, thanks for your help! I could create all the usernames from another IP address, but I'd really rather not, for the sake of convenience. Roseclearfield (talk) 17:46, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi! I've removed the block on account creation from that IP address - anonymous contributions are still enabled though, so you should be able to create accounts, and those accounts should be able to edit. :) [stwalkerster|talk] 17:50, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
You are the best, my friend. Thank you for the lightening fast response! Roseclearfield (talk) 17:57, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Just checking -- can you confirm that this IP can make more than 6 accounts in one day? I have 125 students, so we will need to make 125 in one day. If needed, I can tell you the day and we can take the limit off for that day and put it on the next. Just let me know. Thanks again. Roseclearfield (talk) 17:59, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
We can't disable the limit for an IP address, no. What we did was to give your account the "accountcreator" flag, which allows you, when logged in, to bypass the limit. (Basically, you can create all 125 accounts in the single day, from the single IP address, but you have to do it when logged into your account). There's no other realistic way of doing it. [stwalkerster|talk] 00:09, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks for clearing that up. Roseclearfield (talk) 12:01, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) If you're introducing your students to Wikipedia editing, you might want to show them some videos from here. The page is full of goodies like pdfs and videos made specifically for introducing students to Wikipedia. Choose a few relevant videos to show the students before letting them loose. Good luck, ManishEarthTalkStalk 10:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Done and done. We've looked at the contrib page of our blocked IP address, looked for vandalism history, watched tons of videos. They will be super educated before they are "let loose." :) Roseclearfield (talk) 12:03, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

ACC local copy

I was wondering if you could help me install ACC on my local computer. I already have mediawiki running, but I don't have a copy of the toolserver. I'm thinking of creating a dummy copy of the toolserver, and then installing ACC, but I don't know how. Could you help? ManishEarthTalkStalk 13:58, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Firstly, GOOD LUCK.
  • Grab a copy of the code from subversion( https://waca.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/waca/trunk/acc/ ).
  • Create a MySQL database, using the files in /sql - they do need to be applied in a specific order too, and some of them are unnecessary. Check the svn revision number to help you with this (smaller revisions first)
  • Create a new user manually in the database - password is simply MD5 hashed at the moment, this will change soon.
  • Create a new file called config.local.inc.php, change any settings from config.inc.php in the same way as MediaWiki's LocalSettings.php and DefaultSettings.php. Things to remember to change:
    • Database settings
    • URL and location settings
    • "whichami" to something uniqueish
    • ircbot settings - including UDP settings
  • Modify the source code of accstats.php - change the email addresses at the bottom.
  • Create a new user account on your wiki called WelcomerBot
  • Configure the Peachy framework, set needed paths in config.local.inc.php
  • Configure cron jobs (changing paths as necessary):
0,15,30,45 * * * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-welcomerbot.sh
0 0 * * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-iptable.sh
0 0 * * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-statsemail.sh
0 0 * * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-dataclear.sh
0 0 * * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-backup.sh
0 0 1 * * /home/project/a/c/c/acc/public_html/sge/sge-backup-monthly.sh
After that, you should be reasonably good to go, though bear in mind it wasn't actually designed to have multiple instances on configurations different to the toolserver. The further your configuration is from the toolserver, the more stuff is going to break.
Have fun :D [stwalkerster|talk] 14:40, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Ooh... I got the stuff from svn, but I have two problems. One, I run Windows, so the cron jobs can't be executed. Two, I don't know SQL, and my computer is giving me trouble in running the /sql files. What should I do? Normally, I would have just requested ACC sand svn access, but I only know how to use svn to get files, not to upload. ManishEarthTalkStalk 11:11, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Hmm... most of the cronjobs are unnecessary for most of the time, the only one you might think about running every now and again is the iptable one (for the trusted XFF headers). You'll need to rewrite the sh script into probably a batch file, then you could set it up as a scheduled task in windows. The SQL stuff will likely cause more problems for you, without knowing more I really can't help. As far as subversion goes, there's a brilliant guide to subversion here: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/ [stwalkerster|talk] 16:30, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Would it be easier/better if I requested access to the ACC sandbox backend? By the way, thanks for the svn guide! It's much more comprehensive than the other stuff on the net. I haven't read much but I shall soon. ManishEarthTalkStalk 11:53, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Probably. Sorry I took so long to reply, I thought I'd already replied :P What were you wanting to do, just out of curiosity? [stwalkerster|talk] 22:59, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

A few things. One would be to create a page that checks the IP contribs/blocks/aflogs/whois/etc, and returns a result ("All clear" or "Please check this and that page"). I'd also want to integrate a bit of javascript into the system (like this one). Also I'd like to help kill the bugs/requests at JIRA. By the way, I read (most of) the svn book, and it seems pretty straightforward (Though I don't see how conflicts are minimised on large projects) Thanks, ManishEarthTalkStalk 01:29, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

TBH, you're not likely to run into a conflict on this project. :) Are you able to come onto IRC now? [stwalkerster|talk] 01:33, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
OK, a quick summary of what I was gonna say:
  • Sign up on the sandbox interface at tools:~acc/sand/acc.php
  • Wait for someone to approve and promote you
  • Give me your sourceforge.net username
  • Wait for me to add you to the project
  • Add your IRC mask to accbot.php
  • Add a thing about yourself to team.php
  • Watch CodeReview[1] for feedback on code committed to subversion (you might want to sign up there too, but it's your choice)
Some of these you'll be able to do at once to save time. Any questions, feel free to ask :) [stwalkerster|talk] 02:08, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
My sourceforge username is "mgoregaokar". (I tried to get Manishearth, but for some reason I never got the email-confirm). I already am a sand admin. Thanks, ManishEarthTalkStalk 15:37, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Added. Let me know when you've added your IRC mask to accbot.php, then I can update that, and you'll be able to update the sandbox to the latest version of the code with !sand-svnup. :) [stwalkerster|talk] 18:26, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
For some reason svn is giving me trouble when I try to commit. I tried (running from the directory just outside the acc directory) svn commit acc/accbot.php --username blah --password blah, and I got this error:
svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: Could not use external editor to fetch log message; consider setting the $S
VN_EDITOR environment variable or using the --message (-m) or --file (-F) option
s
svn: None of the environment variables SVN_EDITOR, VISUAL or EDITOR are set, and
no 'editor-cmd' run-time configuration option was found

I made my changes to acc/accbot.php. When I try svn commit accbot.php (without the "acc/"), I get "C:/Users/......./" is not a working copy. I'm using Windows 7. What's wrong? ManishEarthTalkStalk 13:05, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Svn works now. I used -m and it gave me no trouble. I've updated accbot.php and team.php. One question: To use !sand-svnup, do I have to use an IRC client? Or is webchat.freenode.net fine. Because webchat.freenode kills my mask (It's still there, but not visible in whois). Also, you might want to update the Live sitenotice code as per JIRA. ManishEarthTalkStalk 16:30, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

I created the IP/user checker basic page. Unfortunately, I don't know my way around Toolserver queries. I want to query and get the contribs, blocks, rangeblocks, etc. from the database. Could you give me the basic ACC PHP code and some queries that I'd need to do? I think I can figure out most of the queries except contributions. ManishEarthTalkStalk 11:11, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Also, do you know where mediawiki keeps its main content database? I've a local copy, and I can't find wikidb. (I want to see the structure of the database so that its easier to write toolserver queries) ManishEarthTalkStalk 10:56, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
I found a chart at mw: which shows the db structure, but I still don't know how to do toolserver queries. ManishEarthTalkStalk 15:21, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

I've just edited Message 21 at sand to add a UPOL link to the header. Could you please update at Live? ManishEarthTalkStalk 01:38, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

User:217.44.152.87 on Richard Hammond and Top Gear articles

Our rather persistent IP editor 217.44.--- is back, now editing as 217.44.152.87, still pushing two controversial edits regarding the recent issue with Richard Hammond's comments about Mexicans. You recently blocked him/her for edit warring over the same edits as 217.42.22.178 and User:86.142.34.217; he/she has also made the same edits as 217.42.16.142. He/she clearly has no intention of stopping, and I thought a quick heads-up might nip this one in the bud. Drmargi (talk) 14:45, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

ACC

Hello. I registered here to work on account creation. Unfortunately, I skipped over the instruction on what I had to do to activate my account. Do you think you could help me out? BurtAlert (talk) 20:04, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

IRC chat

Hello, there is an upcoming, very informal discussion on IRC on the freenode channel ##chzzalpha connect (quick webchat link) on the 6th March 2011 at 17:00 UTC concerning ways to improve help over IRC, and other matters relating to Wiki?edia channels in general, but mostly about #wikipedia-en-help.

This is just a friendly, informal chat. Nothing official, no fixed agenda. There is nothing 'secretive' about it - anyone is quite welcome. Some of you had a chat there, the other day. We wanted to invite them to carry on discussions, at a prearranged time - and thought it courteous to ask group contacts and channel founders too. Or if you signed up manually.

If you aren't at all interested, feel free to remove yourself from the names we've spammed this to, which is in User:123Hedgehog456/IRC informal chat users. If you didn't sign up, well, people have been adding loads of names to the list, so someone might have accidentally added your name.

Thank you,  Chzz  ►  and 123Hedgehog456 19:49, 15 February 2011 (UTC).
