Hello, Strdvnt and welcome to Wikipedia! It appears you are participating in a class project. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to go through our training for students. Go through our online training for students

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Please also read this helpful advice for students.

Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.

Your instructor or professor may wish to set up a course page, and if your class doesn't already have one please tell your instructor about that. It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them.

We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished! Dr Aaij (talk) 14:45, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Nigh-No-PlaceCover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Joe L. Reed

edit

Hi, I saw that you moved your page live, however it looks like there's already a page on Joe Reed at Joe L. Reed. As such, this can't be moved live in the traditional sense. It also needs some work to make it better fit Wikipedia's style and format guidelines. For example, the lead needs to be written in a certain way, like this:

Joe Louis Reed Sr. (born 1938) is an American politician, activist and educator. He is the current Vice-Chair of Minority Affairs of the Alabama Democratic Party and, since 1979, chair of the Alabama Democratic Conference. He also served as president of the all-Black Alabama State Teachers Association prior to its merger with the all-White Alabama Education Association in 1969, and then served as associate executive secretary alongside Executive Secretary Paul Hubbert from 1969 until both leaders retired from the AEA in 2011.

This was taken from the pre-existing article and would be the way the lead should be set up. I'm going to review the article and give you some other notes. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:19, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here are some notes:

  • This needs to be written in a neutral point of view. As such, this means that the article should not contain anything that reads like it's praising Reed or like it could be seen as an opinion or original research unless it's clearly marked as a quote or attributed to the person making the claim. This reads just a bit too much like it's promoting Reed, with phrases like "For over 40 years he has led the effort". The sentence "Although no longer wielding unparalleled political power, Reed's influence in state politics has continued" is also a good example of promotional sounding content.
The issue with this is that it reads like marketing prose. Your instructor, Dr Aaij, can go into more depth about this.
  • Avoid euphemisms such as calling someone late to mark that they are deceased. It's better to state that they're deceased or to say "they died on...". In the case of Reed's parents it's not really necessary to say that they're dead since they're not the main focus of the article.
  • There needs to be more sourcing in the article, as you have large portions of content that are unsourced. It's very important that everything is sourced, as otherwise it can be seen as original research and challenged. This is even more important when it comes to major and controversial claims.
  • The sources need to have more information. You have a quote in the early life section but the source is only listed as "Montgomery (AL) Advertiser, May 7, 2013." In order to really verify the claims it'll need the title of the news article and if available, the name of the person writing the article. However I will note that the quote is problematic for another reason, which I'll elaborate on in the next post.
  • The quote is very vague in how it's styled, as it's unclear whether the quote is being said by Benn or Reed. Since the quote isn't specifically about Reed but rather about the event, if the quote wasn't made by Reed it's unnecessary to have in the article since it puts too much weight on what one specific person said about a single event in Reed's past. Unless there's a lot of coverage out there about Reed's participation in this event there isn't any true need to go into that much depth and include a quote. I would recommend removing it.

I hope that this all helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:47, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
