Possible Conflict of Interest

edit

  Hello, Splloyd. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Dennis O'Neill (tenor), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Verbcatcher (talk) 02:51, 1 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Dennis O'Neill (tenor)

edit

Biographical articles on Wikipedia are not intended to present the "authorised biography" of the subject. If you have a close professional or personal relationship with Dennis O'Neill then please do not edit the article. Please see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Relationship between the subject, the article, and Wikipedia for guidance.

I will revert your edits to Dennis O'Neill (tenor) immediately, not because of a potential COI but because your text is a copyright violation of his homepage.[1] This is confirmed by this comparison. The copied page has the footnote "Copyright © 2018 Dennis O'Neill Tenor - All Rights Reserved", which is unacceptable for content copied to Wikipedia.

If you have no conflict of interest then you could rewrite the facts from O'Neill's homepage in your own words, otherwise please raise any issues with the article at Talk:Dennis O'Neill (tenor). Describe there anything that is factually incorrect or that is too unimportant to mention, or new material to be added.

I am also concerned about the removal of the picture and the audio clip. These have been released by the record company Sain under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported licence, and they were posted to Wikimedia Commons on behalf of the National Library of Wales. If the licenses are valid then it is entirely proper for these to be used in this article. If the licensing is incorrect then you should contact Sain, or see c:Commons:Contact us/Problems.

It would be good to have a more recent photo of O'Neill if one is available with a compatible licence, see c:Commons:Licensing. The photo on his homepage would be fine, but it is covered by the copyright declaration there and its copyright is probably owned by the photographer. If you have a photograph that can be released under a suitable licence then please post it to Wikimedia Commons, or send me a link and I will post it.

Similar considerations apply to the audio clip, which was recorded in 1968. Would Mr. O'Neill prefer another clip from c:Category:Audio clips of Dennis O'neill?

I am minded to restore the picture and the audio clip, but I will give you an opportunity to discuss this first.

I am trying to be positive with a view to improving the article, subject to Wikipedia policies and guidelines. You can respond here, or leave a note on my talk page or on the article's talk page.

Hello Verbcatcher, I am a student of Mr O'Neill and he asked for some help in updating his wiki page to reflect more current information, including an updated image. I currently host and manage dennisoneilltenor.com . If this is a COI then how does one ensure they are being represented correctly online?

I think the audio clip is probably ok for now as I can see there aren't that many recent clips available on wikipedia.

I can understand needing to re-write the bio so as not the same at his website. How can I help improve the article without having any changes reverted? I have not done a lot of wiki editing.

Thank you, Splloyd (talk) 15:16, 29 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry for my late response, I have not been active on Wikipedia for a few months.
Whether you have a conflict of interest depends on your relationship with the subject. In my view, attending lectures given by Dennis O'Neill would not a problem, but having regular one-on-one singing lessons with him might be. Managing his authorised website might also be an issue. Please see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. If in doubt then ask at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard.
One way to resolve the copyright violation issue would be to change the license at dennisoneilltenor.com to one that is compatible with Wikipedia, see WP:Compatible licence. This could either be for the entire site or for specified components, such as the text. If you wrote the text on the website then you can probably change its license. However, for photographs the copyright usually belongs to the photographer and only he or she can assign a new license, see c:Commons:Licensing.
If you have a conflict of interest then you should give your suggested changes at Talk:Dennis O'Neill (tenor), either as bullet points or as proposed text, see Wikipedia:Edit requests. Feel free to add a note to my talk page to alert me.
The main page for people who have problems with their Wikipedia biographies is Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects.
