Journalistic hyperbole
Hi, I've noticed you saying on the RS noticeboard: "Journalistic hyperbole is not worth mentioning, no matter where it appeared". I'm finding an issue with journalistic hyperbole myself - journalists' tendency to talk of things being a 'record' (since a date carefully chosen to avoid admitting it isn't really a record). Any suggestions of wp policies/essays etc that can back up my concern that articles, and particularly the leads to articles, avoid journalistic hyperbole? - That's a good question. The most relevant policy I know of is WP:NEWSORG, which reminds us that even "reliable" news sources often contain a mixture of opinion and (alleged) fact. Policy states that matters of opinion must be attributed to the writer and not stated in Wikipedia's voice. And while it's probably not directly supported by policy, my view is that such opinions shouldn't generally be included in Wikipedia at all unless the writer is a notable person in that context.

Things like "The first time since 2002 that...", when a more reasonable description might be "The third time in C21 that...", or "the hottest day so far this year", or "the windiest day in /somewhere obscure/ since records began" (when if you delve further, records only began 20 years ago, whereas most other places they go back longer, and the record wasn't broken in those places) etc. DrArsenal (talk) 23:11, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
