Good Humour Rusty Award
I, MacGyverMagic, hereby award you with the barnstar for Good Humor for your comment "I'd like to help you out, but my chemistry is rusty." to the question what you'd get when mixing iron and oxygen. I almost spit out my drink over my keyboard. - Mgm

Just to clarify, that off-topic link in Epistemology didn't come from me, but from an anon IP. Please double-check before making accusations. --The Hanged Man 20:12, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see what you meant, now. Whatever text got scrambled just made it confusing. No biggie, anyhow. --The Hanged Man 00:37, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reference Desk edit

Thank you for helping me out at the Reference Desk. I asked about the Ottoman capitals, and you said the first was Söğüt. Thanks. |AndonicO 11:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

A late thank you edit

Thanks, for your response to "List of adjectival forms of place names", I went away for a few weeks after and never got to say thanks at the time. Rex the first talk | contribs 17:23, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reference desk edit

I notice over the past few days that, after your edits, some of my posts and other peoples posts are missing. If you have removed them, can you please put them back. THanks --Light current 11:22, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I went through my edits during the past few days and couldn't find this. Occasionally, I have messed up the title of the section (because for some reason hitting the double brackets on this computer sometimes produces an edit at the top of the edit box, which I don't always notice the first time around). And I have, on occasion, overseen that other entries had been made in the mean time, and misplaced my edit, thus upsetting the chronological order. I immediately corrected both types of mis-editing as soon as I noticed them. Could you point out specific incidents showing text deletion? This is, of course, the opposite of what I want, and, except for one e-mail address, I have never intentionally removed text from the reference desk. Thank you for pointing this out though, I will certainly be as careful as possible in the future.---Sluzzelin 11:36, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Something strange has been happening on the ref desks, and it may be down to something else, like improper archiving. Its just 1 October 2006 (UTC) that I noticed when you were removing some spaces, a number of posts went as well. ill try to get the diffs 8-) --Light current --Light current 11:41,

Thanks for Nepal place name [on Reference Desk/Humanities] edit

Your noting the location helps support your suggestion, which does indeed have the two identified consonants. At least it gives me something to pursue. Thanks for the input! -- Deborahjay 14:03, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

...and in response to your reply:

  • I enjoy questions that teach me something new.

Then you'd love my job: I'm a translator, and when not occupied in my main line (Holocaust) I take on various and sundry freelance assignents in the Humanities ("Arts and Letters").

  • ...if the script is copied from a map, it could conceivably even be the country 'Nepal'...

More likely it's the author's recollection of how it sounded when spoken. If I can't make an undisputed ID, I'll need one or several most likely names, to jog his memory.

  • I noticed this valley is popular for white water sports and trekking, so I assume it should be documented somewhere.

That's been my hope, but so far no hits, though I didn't go through all the many maps your Google Images link provided. This text is, in fact, an account of a whitewater rafting trip, and I'm just an armchair researcher at this point.

I've added more details to my Reference Desk query. If I do get a confirmed response, I'll let you know! --Thanks again, Deborahjay 15:03, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Thanks for the message, Sluzz. It was much appreciated after a very stimulating but very exhausting weekend. Although I can call myself "retired" now, I'll still be working from home as a consultant 2-3 days a week for at least the next 9 months, so my Wiki-world won't quite be 10 times as large, but I will certainly be able to devote a lot more time to WP than I have up till now. And other things - such as the Great Australian Work of Non-Fiction. I've had a number of ideas cooking away in my brain for years, and now, at last, I'll be able to put them into practice. Thanks again. JackofOz 23:19, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nice catch on the refdesk... I should have searched on WP first! Cheers, Sam Clark 15:12, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good point edit

Good point at Wikipedia_talk:Reference_desk#Second_opinion. To some people, StuRat's insistance that his medical advice is OK probably looks like intentional troublemaking on his part. Of course, to other people, Ten's removal of it probably looks like intentional picking on StuRat. We have a legitimate need to keep harmful content off the ref desk- but we also have a legitimate need to not cause undue fighting. What the hell can be done?!? Portrait of the Librarianiam edit

Lol. That picture of me must have been taken while I was doing research for a question at the Humanities desk; those are often the hardest.  --LambiamTalk 07:01, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your helpful explanation on WP:RD/L  :-) edit

I really appreciate your remarks in response to my Language Reference Desk query on alternative spellings for foreign first names (Raúl vs. Raoul). I almost didn't post the query because I figured I understood why, phonologically - but getting a more comprehensive view of the phenomenon is valuable, especially as I'll have to explain this to the text's author and eventually sundry additional third parties, among them my translator colleagues. So thanks for your input! (even though it tempts me to wander off and read those other pages whose links you provided  :-) Deborahjay 09:49, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

(Ok, I've now switched to the keep-the-thread-on-one-page camp.) Thank you for your kind comment, and you're very welcome, for what it was worth. I think the following posters made some good relativating points, especially since I didn't do any research on Capablanca himself. I have no reference for this, but it's my impression that the manner of "translating" names from languages using the same script has gone out of fashion (one big exception being the Popes). ---Sluzzelin 22:59, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
