Drexel University
editI noticed that you've been adding notable alumni to the Drexel University page. It is not necessary because there is already a page with all of the alumni, List of Drexel University alumni, linked to the main page. I am going to remove the list that you've added, again, because it is unnecessary to have duplicate lists. I have been in recent discussions with current employees of the alumni office at DU, as well as alumni of DU, regarding a notable alumni list, and the general consensus is to have the list on the main wiki page. This is from an effective PR and Marketing stand point. Try doing a comparison with local competitive colleges (ie UPenn, Temple, LaSalle, etc.) Not to mention, it took several of us to conduct an exhaustive search before we found the separate page. - If you are looking to make this page comparable to universities pages on Wikipedia then you need to look over Wikipedia's best articles, those can be found at WP:FA. Notice most universities have separate alumni lists. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia anybody can edit it, however there are guidelines and policies that you need to follow, please read through the welcome message and the guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities to get a good idea of what other academic articles on Wikipedia look like. I might also mention that UPenn (List of University of Pennsylvania people), Temple (List of Temple University people), and Swarthmore (List of Swarthmore College people) to name just a few all have separate pages to showcase the alumni of the institution, this is the norm. A comparable example to the Drexel list would be the List of Dartmouth College alumni, which is a featured list, one of the best lists on Wikipedia. Consensus on Wikipedia is that long lists of alumni are too cumbersome to be on the main school page and should be moved to a page of their own. If you had a hard time finding the link then I don't know what to say because there is a link to the article directly in the alumni section and within the navigational template at the bottom of the page. You stated that this decision was made from a marketing standpoint, however Wikipedia is not a marketing or PR tool, and not for self promotion. If you are employed by or affiliated with Drexel then you need to read over the conflict of interest guidelines before editing the Drexel University or related articles again. --ImmortalGoddezz 21:34, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Let me clearly state I am not employed by Drexel University, which is what I stated to you before. Please read carefully. And you are right about Wiki not being for self promotion, but you being a student, I would assume you would not want to do anything to hurt your alma mater. I am not going to debate back and forth with you because, frankly, that is a waste of my time to fight with a young student who clearly has a lot to learn. I wouldn't expect you to understand marketing, public relations, advertising or business to any degree. It's amazing how youth today "know everything" about absolutely nothing. You would be wise to learn something from CEOs (no, not just me) with extremely successful ventures who have gained credentials, knowledge and the respect of their communities instead of dictating Wiki "bylaws" and citing advice from other Wiki users of age similar to yours. Regardless, based on your logic, you are not by any means the final say on Drexel's page. If I wanted, I could hire an intern and make it their job to keep adding the alumni list onto Drexel's main page everytime you delete it. Further more, it would be fair play to completely delete the content on your alumni list page simply because I do not agree with where it is placed, hm? Which once again, is based on YOUR logic. Wikipedia is ruled by consensus, no surprisingly enough not just my own, and if you want to debate this standard amongst other editors, feel free. I'm sorry, but Journal of Social Change has been deleted as meeting WP:CSD#G11. "This applies to pages that are exclusively promotional and would need to be fundamentally rewritten to conform with Wikipedia:NOTFORPROMOTION." These must be rewritten from scratch from "reliable, third party sources unconnected to the subject." Please see WP:RS.
Wikipedia:Identifying blatant advertising#Typical signs of blatant advertising contains information about content to avoid. For more information on content that may be perceived as promotional, click User:Deepfriedokra/promo. These are just rough guides. Pages can avoid all those pitfalls and still be glaringly obvious ad copy. Sometimes pages meeting WP:CSD#G11 give the appearance of an editor violating Wikipedia:Conflict of interest or WP:PAID. Please read and heed them if they apply to you. Please read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations.
There is a very common mistake of assuming that the prohibition against promotional editing applies only to promotion for commercial gain, but that is not so. Sometimes creators of promotional content are bewildered that it is considered such. If one has been trained to write or spent some time writing corporate documents or mission/vision statements or anything similar, they may simply be blind to the promotionality. It can be hard to unlearn.
Another misconception is that the prohibition against promotional editing applies only to businesses or organizations. Anything can be promoted, including a person, a non-commercial organization, a point of view, etc. and CV/resumé's are by their nature promotional.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia-- subjects must meet notability guidelines with reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and providing verifiable information. That generally means someone unconnected with the subject needs to have written a great deal about the subject. Please see Wikipedia:Citing sources . Template:cite has templates you can use in citing your sources. Place the template {{references}} at the bottom of the page, and references cited in the text will appear there.
